I got this email from the nepalese society here in Connecticut. I have always wondered how would I seek help if an event like this were to occur to me. Hopefully, everyone will take time reading the following and help in anyway for the recovery of this unfortunate Nepali Student. Even if you can't help yourself, perhaps you can let someone else know who might potentially help her. Life is unpredictable. Tomorrow we might find ourselves in her shoes. Where will we seek help then?

Subject: A Nepali Student patient at St. Raphael Hospital- HELP HER!

Namaste Nepali Community,

I am sending this mail on beahalf of one Nepali student Ms. SAMRITA LOHANI , MSc student of University of New Haven, who is suffering from both kidneys failure and undergoing Hemodyalysis thrice a week at St. Raphael Hospital, New Haven. The only way to overcome this terrible disease is to get kidney transplantation.Although she has insurance coverage from the university, this insurance does not cover hemodyalysis cost and transplantation cost. It is unfortunate that a student from third world country without having enough fund to undergo medication and treatment is none other than one of our own Nepali student. At New Haven, all the Nepali Community are raising the fund substantial enough to give this girl a life. We are expecting same from all other Nepalese living in the United States. In addition, we also need advises for how to raise adequate fund and hopefully be able to open Samrita Foundation and have money deposited in this foundation. We will need all possible help to initiate this process. As, we do not have sufficient time either, we appreciate this help and reply from all Nepalese Individuals as soon as possible. We also expect additional contacts if you have any. Should you have any questions, please feel free to email us or call us. Your generous help will be lifesaving.

You can contact following individuals for this purpose:

Soni Mulmi-Pradhanang Phone # 203-931-9500 soni.mulmi@uconn.edu

Bishal Pradhanang Phone # 203-931-9500 or 203-435-6150 drbishal@yahoo.com

Raj Kapoor Phone # 203-6232891 rajn_7@hotmail.com

Actually I don't know the details either. I just thought of bringing to the attention of a larger nepali community. You could contact the personnels listed above for further details. Thank you.

San dai ,

Do something to help this gal.

Because even transplantation of one kidney can save her life. Donating a dollar from every nepali in US can save her life. I know our nep daju bhai didi bahini are good hearted.

Good job Oys.

I would contribute..
Can give the details about the Expenses?
how much is covered by insurance and how much is not?
and also the expain the the medical procedures she is going thru in detail?
so we get better Idea about her situation
oys_chill Posted on 05-Feb-04 04:23 PM

Max,

As far as I know, its a very expensive procedure. The nepali community around are trying to come up with a "target figure" to fundraise collectively to defray the cost. Like i said earlier, I don't know the details. It would be really nice if you contact one of the personnels mentioned above and get the details.thanx

It's very sad to hear about this type of situation.

In every state/county they have some kind of Medical emergency Assistance / fund fo this kind of situation. It doesn't matter what insurance you have, what status you're in.
But the patient have to be in county or state hospital. In her case may be she will have to transfer to state/county hospital in order to qualify for emergency assistance.

Somebody can go and talk to Social Worker (Case Manager) in the hospital and ask about this Emergency Assistance funding. They will help you. If you can't find and call "First call for help" and ask them about the assistance program. In our state it's phone# 211 so it could be same there too.

My wife works as social worker so we will try to find more info and post it later. In the mean time if you have any question post it here and we will try to find the answer. When we have little more info we might call one of your contact info too.

Hercules.
