Manose Singh, whose photo appears on the right, played the flute for about 50 minutes tonight (Friday night) at the Full Moon Music Festival at Kirateswor Sangeet Ashram at Pashupati in Kathmandu. He played "hansa-dhoni raag" -- a playful, light yet sublime piece of music. I had never heard Manose play before, though I had heard a lot about him from other Kirateswor musicians. I was quite impressed with his playing the flute. Manose -- whose hairstyle is pretty much Nepali (i.e. not braided like in one of the photos) these days -- played beautifully. Accompanying him on Tabala was Nava Raj Gurung, and on Tanpura was Shesh Narayan Shrestha. Nava Raj, BTW, is one of Nepal's finest tabala players who has won many awards. Anyway, those of you who have yet to listen to Manose play the flute, don't pass up the opportunity when it comes your way. oohi ashu ktm, nepal |

Hi Ashu, Thanks for the info. Do you know if Manose has a CD? Also, on a personal note, will you be in KTM this July? Would love to get together with you and other Sajhaites. |

Particularly impressed when eight-year-old Manose fell in love with the bamboo flute one night, and he purchased a two-rupee flute from a street hawker and began to carry it with him in his school bag where it vied for space with his favorite sling shot. Now he is ostaj at so young age. best wishes! |

Manose indeed plays his flute beautifully. As good as the band 1974 AD is, I felt like the audience were cheated wherever Manose couldn't join the band. He's the cheereleader of the band with immense energy to jump up and down and invite the audience to join in the fun he seems to be having. A real gem of a guy too. Sitara, go to his website to find out more baout him, his schedules for next few months and his cds. - http://www.manosemusic.com/ |

Prem Charo, I've long been a quiet admirer of Sitara's variously impressive, clever and entertaining witticisms on Sajha. Meeting her face to face would be an honor. I'm sure I'd keep quiet, feeling that anything I say would sound pretty stupid. You also wrote: "But I think Ashu doesn't meet any guys." If it's any consolation in this Valentine week, I meet guys all right for guff-suff, but I am biologically programmed to NOT get attracted to or by them :-) oohi ashu ktm, nepal |

Ashu: You do flatter me much... the honour would be mine... all mine! I will surely email you; would like to attend some of the goings on in Martin Chautari. I vaguely recall Pratoush Onta from GAA days. :) Prem Charo ji: Surely, you do Sajhaites injustice for assuming that they (all) carry personal vendettas. Anyways, this time, my visit to KTM carries an exciting angle which was lacking in my previous visit, two years ago: people I have interacted and become friends with through Sajha. |

>>Nava Raj, BTW, is one of Nepal's finest tabala players who has won many awards. Wow, it feels great to hear about Navaraj Gurung and his achievements. Afterall he is a toliya! ;) Manose is a talented flute player. I heard him playing on one of the 1974 AD concerts and I was impressed by his ability to improvise the notes and play the fusion music. Most importantly, he plays notes in style and he also understands the importance of certain notes in various ragas. (Pandit Hari Prashad Chaurashiya is not the most brilliant flute player because he can blow the bamboo stick better than anybody else, but because he knows how to manipulate notes accordingly to match the mood created by ragas). I think Manose is better than SurSudha when it comes to understand the mood created by ragas. Anybody can play "ni re ga re ni re sa" notes and claim they played yaman raga, but how those notes are played matters the most. Manose knows how to play it beautifully hau!! |

I too, had gone to the event; and have to say did thoroughly enjoyed despite the cold breeze and our disappointment of not seeing the moon due to cloudy evening. However, musical performance by young boys and girls, renowned artists, and ofcourse Manose made the evening completely worth it. I had seen Manose play flute in Ann Arbor last (informally), and since then have been a fan of his. Besides his talent, I had found Manose to be a very humble person as well. I also possess his CD entitled, "Notes from home--himalayan folk tunes", which is simply fabulous, and soothing to hear. Highly recommendable. My good wishes to Manose to flourish more in the days to come. Ashu, had met your friend S, who plays Tabala. I hope to attend her performance at the end of this month. Sitara, hi :) |

hello frens. hmm! kirateswor sangeet ashram is happening these days . finally.. it feels good to be part of the scene where Hindu classical music is performed. kirateswor has been promoting the classical music in nepal despite its fraustating unpoularity among local youth. few other places exist where one can enjoy hindu classical music in ktm like, 1_Pilgrims book house ,Thamel.( sunday evenings) mrs gyanu radha gorkhali on sitar accompained by mr.achyut ram bhandari on tabala. both musicians are legends of nepal who have been performing internationally for more than a decade. 2_ fullmoon resturant and bar ,thamel.( tuesday evenings) classical and fusion music by milen tendulkar(violin),suresh bajracharya(hawaiin guitar),prem ojhyia(tabla). all these musicians are highly respected classical musicans of nepal. 3_indira kala nidhi sangeet vidyalaya, pulchowk. once every month. 4_patan museum ,patan. once a month for fusion music . i hope this helps the classical and semi classical music lovers. blac_ |
