It is really stimulating to read about the discussion about the ongoing media war in Nepal. It seems that everbody is interested in it. But what I really like to point out is a different angle to the role of media in Nepal. It is true that there has been a himalayan scale growth in the private media in the country since 1990. But is it really producing any good for the society? Some of the points to note are -There has been a lack of serious discussion about grave topics like education, health. All the private media is doing right now is look for cheap issues that make reader happy for 10-15 minutes. -If we take the notion that people make mind after reading the papers, then what is the result? The hope for the future is diminishing and people have been more negative. If we blame political parites, King, Maoisits for the current state of the country, shouldn't media also take responsibility? - On top of this what private media is doing right now is fight with each other for money and marketshare when the country is in such grave situation. So why not focus our attention on role of all the media (be it Swadeshi or Bideshi), which is not serving any purpose other than earning millions and making big buildings for themselves. Thoughts are welcome.
