Over the past few weeks we have seen an increasing number of ethnically charged postings in sajha. As we all know these kind of postings undermine the main goal of sajha, which is to BRING TOGETHER NEPALI COMMUNITIES.

These ethnic issues are our differences which does not have any resolutions. The older generations of Nepal have grown up with strict caste and ethnic rules. Currently we are seeing more flexibility regarding caste and ethnicity at least in the capital and in major cities in Nepal. Understandably, there is still a trickle down effect of ethnic and caste stereotypes in the current generation.

We all know Gurungs, Tamangs, Bahuns, Chettris, Newars, Limbus, and any other caste or ethnicity are all human beings. We will have had or still have good acquaintances/friends from all these different caste/ethnicities. Yet, we still have no reservations when it comes to stereotyping and trying to make our own caste/ethnicity look better or trying to make other caste/ethnicity look bad.

The discussion on which caste/ethnicity is better or worse is never going to be resolved, and it is simply one of our differences - which has been created because we grew up in a society with such caste/ethnic differentiation. There is not much we can do about how we grew up, but there is a lot we can do for the future generations. Let us not pass down such messages of ethnic differences that make us fight against each other.

I had hoped that like most other postings these postings on caste/ethnic bashings would go into oblivion after few days of discussions. But since that is not happening and since it seems to be taking a negative momentum, I have to intervene in order to re-iterate the goal of sajha - of BRINGING TOGETHER NEPALI COMMUNITIES.

Having said all this, I would like to request visitors to not indulge in caste/ethnic bashings. Any continuation of these will be moved to OURDIFFERENCES usergroup.

Best Regards,
San

San:

Thanks for being proactive. I don't think I ever opened those threads, but they were kind of eyesore.

Sorry fellas who love ethnic bashing. There are very few buyers of communal hatred these days. You belong to an increasingly vanishing species, and I will be happy to see you go the way of dodo.
Suman Pradhan Posted on 16-Feb-04 12:22 AM

I second that San. On another note, the said thread reflects the Nepali society at large. Unfortunately, casteism and communalism is still very much part and parcel of our society. But as Biswo said, let's not let our future generations grow up in this hatred. For that to happen however, we need a sane and serious discussion of what makes us different, not name-calling. But being PC and sweeping it all under the carpet is not going to do us any good either. So to all those who insist in discussing this serious subject, drop the racist name-calling and instead indulge in serious debate.
cheers
Suman

Whew! Finally!

Ethnic slurs/threads seem to come in waves; ebbing and flowing with the moods of society's malcontents.
suva chintak Posted on 16-Feb-04 10:54 AM

Good decision San!

Having said that, I am a little suprised why it took so long to axe the ethno-bashing in Sajha. I remember a number of people had called for stopping the sheer ignorance and stupidity way back when some self-righteous bigots started cursing and accusing the Madhesi, Shah, and Rana castes and regional identities for every problem under the sun. It was actually PC to bash the trio; a sure sign of political sophistication.

Then the Bahuns were added to the list; it got even more acrimonious and shrillier as some tasted the bitter medicine they had heaped on others.

This week, Newars and Chhetris were dragged in to be the punching bags for our ethnocentricism. Ethno-bashing was not fun anymore, so we all call for quits; thanks God!

Let's be realistic here: Sajha.com cannot change human nature.

Nor can it realistically legislate what one can post and one cannot post. Moral exhortations and public urgings are fine, but they seldom work..

Sooner or later, mark my words, topics related to ethnic-bashing will return to Sajha.
If that's s, what could be a long-term solution?

I would suggest that like a "good government" (run by, who else but, economists :-)!), Sajha.com, where posting privileges come for free, should be in the business of providing incentives and disincentives to affect posting behaviour.

Allow me to explain.

On the thread related to "depression", Sajha has provided INCENTIVES to posters to
share information, news and ideas related to depression. [Depression, by the way, is
often a temporary mental health problem that can be fully CURED with appropriate medical and other interventions, if only people seek help.]

Now, Sajha.com has provided incentives for people to post in that thread by ANONYMIZING details related to posters. This way, a poster in need of serious
medical attention can seek help from others on Sajha without revealing his/her
identity.

In a similar vein, why not provide DISINCENTIVES to ethnic bashers by REVEALING everything about them (IP address, frequency of visits to Sajha and other such
details) along with their postings?

In other words, these guys are FREE to post whatever ethnic-bashing material (as per San's definition) they want to post. But the "price" they pay for that freedom is that they can be traced or tracked OPENLY by anyone anywhere anytime. And let's see whether those guys will continue with their ethnic-bashing behaviour on Sajha.

I would think that for almost all of these bashers, the "costs" of revealing themselves
will be higher than the "benefits" they derive from the posting such nonsense.

What do you guys think?

eXpert_opinion Posted on 16-Feb-04 10:34 PM

Ashu,

I agree with you as an economist myself that if there was a price to be paid for being an ethnic basher the supply of bashing will decrease.

However, I wonder what the effect of revealing IP addresses and other informartion gathered by sajha would be. IP addresses are mostly dynamic unless you are on a dedicated broadband connection so revealing IPs might not do much.

Emails that are used to register on sajha could be any of the freebie emails where you do not have to provide any real information.

I dont know if revealing IPs etc is enough of an dis-incentive to stop such people from running their mouth.

Just my $0.02
ashu Posted on 17-Feb-04 02:54 AM

Expert Opinion,

I'd leave it up to San, assuming he takes up this idea, to work out the PRECISE details
of these disincentive measures.

My interest was to point out the lamentable shortcomings of earnest public urgings
and serious moral exhortations that go into changing people's private behaviour in
a public forum. Such things rarely work.

And so, the idea, for what it's worth, is to put some kind of a "price" (or a "tax" if you will) on the ethnic-bashing postings with the hope that the bashers will find the act of ethnic bashing on Sajha "costly" for themselves.

As someone famous once said: "Economics is all about incentives. Rest is commentary".

Gokul Posted on 17-Feb-04 05:25 AM

Some economic approaches to curb ethnic bashing (EB)

(1) Let us make the EB curve concave so that it has diminishing marginal utility.
(2) Let there be an "invisible hand".
(3) Let us raise its opportunity cost.
(4) Prove mathematically that EB is pareto optimal, i.e. you must hurt others to be better off yourself.
(5) Demonstrate that EB is a moral hazard.
(6) And finally, let us assume that there are no ethnic bashers!
KALANKISTHAN Posted on 17-Feb-04 06:39 AM

Hey how about revealing the computer number or something, remember before sajha introduced "register" policy, poster's (unregistered) screenname used to be displaced over some distinct number? So everytime you used that particular computer, it would always display the same number even if you have 100 different registered names. (Yeah yeah, there are side effects)

Let's see if tallman and fireman are the same!! ;)
nepali_angel Posted on 17-Feb-04 11:52 AM

You can try listing people' s IP address. Smart people would go to a free proxy site and pick an IP address.
Biswo Posted on 17-Feb-04 11:57 AM

Nepali angel:

Remember that 'smart' people don't engage themselves in ethnic bashing. Their time is worthy and they know wasting time advancing such nefarious ideology is nonsensical.

Glad to hear that you have intervened. In addition to the race, can you also include Religion. From time to time, I see bunch of losers commenting Negatively on Buddhism even though no one had done any harm to anyone.

Let your message be loud and clear to all sajha brothers and sisters.

mahakaal Posted on 17-Feb-04 04:43 PM

mr ashu what do you think would do any good by revealing the ip address.......what is that for....so that a computer geek can do smth on the computer of somebody whose posting he does not like..or whats that???????
for a brainn like you,you need to suggest like say whoever have difference come along and go to the boxing ring and fight 12 rounds and whoever wins wins and the amount collected from that goes to sajha.com.that would rather be a better idea is not it?suppy and demand factor comes into play here tooo.
its right that there should be no ethnic fights but ideas can be diferent of different people AND SINCE THIS IS AN OPEN FORUM YOU CAN EXPRESS YOUR VIEWS
and MR BISWO obody becomes a fool just because he doesnt share your idea and if you consider yourself a better person than you would be doing something else and not talking about bad people with nefarious ideology .
VincentBodega Posted on 17-Feb-04 04:54 PM

what the heck is that post on "INDIAN WANNABE NEPALESE...." doing if you all hate ethnic bashing so much? a little double standard dont you all think?
I still believe that censorship makes everyone blind. "Let it be" is my policy.

Meera Posted on 17-Feb-04 05:44 PM

San dai, I thought you said that you would abolish/ ban all ethnic bashings.
I just saw a thread that is blaming the Chhettris and another one about Indian haters.
Interestingly enough all the hating threads are written by a select few.

IS there ANY WAY to ban those threads??????
Sajha is SUPPOSED to be a hate-FREE site or so I thought!!!!!!!!
Correct me if I am wrong!

weaveing in their own various interpretatons. That's life.

As the slogan goes, hey, live life in color.

On this day of Shiva Ratri, here's a well-known poem for you. Don't know who the author is. But I find this poem quite inspirational. You may find this interesting too.

******

DO IT ANYWAY

People are often unreasonable,
Illogical, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of being
Selfish and having ulterior motives
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false
Friends and some true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,
People may cheat you.
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,
Could be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,
They may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,
People will often forget tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,
And it may never be enough.
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis,
It is between you and God.
It never was between you and them anyway.

happy Shivaratri,
I think Nepali angel have no historical knowledge about
Nepal.
She calls the Chetris as the descendants of Bahun man and Magar women.
Some
of the Chetris are the descendants of ancient Aryan horde called Khasa,
today represented by Thapa, Basnyat, Khadka, and Karki Chetris. Some
are the
descendants of the Rajput military adventurers. Some are the
descendants of
the Mongols who were brave and military leaders like Khand Thakuris.
Some
are the descendants of the Bahuns who took the sword for daily bread
like
Pandeys. Still some are the mixture of bahun males and Mongol females
through intercaste marriage. You Nepali Boksi, your ancestars were wise
enough to do intercaste marriage with the Mongol women without caste
discrimination and equally gave chance to the Mongols to rise. But you
present Bahuns are corrupt and hypocrites like Koiralas, madhavnepals,
etc.
