As of now, there has been ongoing fierce battle between maoists and governement forces in remote hill district of Kalikot. Long range missiles, helicopters, etc are used by security forces. The battle has been continuing for more than 24 hours.

Long range missiles?!!?? Gimme a break. If you fire a LR missile in Nepal it will land in another country......
bardan Posted on 17-Feb-04 06:52 AM

its long range artillery,not missiles.

maoists will be weak militararily as the RNA gets better.but there is no political opposition to the maoists in the villages, all the opposing parties are practically non existent there.
the maoists are murdering workers of the nepali congress,RPP and the UML,and these parties are rallying against the king.am i missing something here!
suva chintak Posted on 17-Feb-04 01:43 PM

bardan jyu,
Excellent point you raise here; why are the political parties increasingly cooperating with the Maoists even when the rebels continue to kill their lower level party workers? Are these poor party cadres just some sacrificial lambs in some grand political design? Why are the political leaders not concerned with the daily killings of their district workers?

The basic lesson for me is that if these leaders are not botherd about the well-being of their own party workers in the villages, how can they ever be honestly concerned for the welfare of the ordinary citizens and the country. If these bastards can let the Maoists kill their party workers and still continue to cooperate with the Maoists, there is not much to expect from them.

Why are these parties seeing more threat from the King ? The King is not at least killing and maiming the party workers like the Maoists. If politics is a rational game, and if politics is about survival, shouldn't the party leaders cooperate with the King to defeat the Maoists so that the killing of their workers comes to a stop? The current politics therefore defies all logic.

So why are these political leaders raising hell against the King even as they compete with each other to be closer to the Maoists?

To me, this is the great mystery of current Nepali politics.

A tentative guess on this puzzle: The King, in dismissing the government, has taken away the cushy chairs of the political leaders. Their personal power and wealth has gone. They have direct grudge against the King.

On the other hand, the Maoists are killing only the low level party workers. They do not target high level ones like Girija or Madhav Nepal or the other big shots. The leaders have no direct grudge against the Maoists. On the other hand, the Maoists can even be allies if they can help to bring down the king and restore their kurchi and privileges. In the meantime, let the Maoists kill a couple of more party cadres. After all what are a few more sacrifices....a perfunctory statement will take care of that also.

So from purely personal

I appreciate the effort by the RNA for laying their lives on the line. I support our brave soldiers.

SC:

"On the other hand, the Maoists are killing only the low level party workers. They do not target high level ones like Girija or Madhav Nepal or the other big shots."

You also do not hear of any rich businessmen killed or kidnapped. The reason (from my businessman friend) is that the businessmen have been paying the Maoaists "fees."
