I hope all of you have encountered a special types of bikes on the streets of Nepal whoozing in a zig zag way as if the croudy and dusty roads of nepal is a race track. I think most of the people will have hard time finding the model of the bike and its manufacturer since the bikes have very less remains of its orginality.

All of the bike manufactures spends millions of rupees in research and development in order to develop a new model of bike with concentration on safety, power, economy etc.

But we Nepalis are challenging them by changing their new bikes into our own model by replacing the silencer pipes, raising the shock and changing the tyres, cutting the handles, changing the colour etc.

This is illegal in my aspect as the type, colour of the bike is mentioned in the billbook of the bike which is issued by transportation regulation department. Any changes in the above mentioned but be reflected in the billbook.

Have they made changes in the billbook?

What are the traffic police looking at?

And what about the road safetyas they are sporting in the crowded roads risking not only their own lifes but are staking others lives also. They are also assisting in noise pollution, dust pollution etc.
dada Posted on 17-Feb-04 06:27 AM

Guffadi ji,

It's called "customization". Have you seen the fast n the furious. Surely u can't get fat wheels and NO2 in nepal, but the kids can still make their bikes more razzy by doing funky stuff. And it is not illegal in Nepal consider all the stuff going on there.

Next time u see one of those bikes, just holla-- nice wheels bro, gimme a wheely!!
KALANKISTHAN Posted on 17-Feb-04 06:50 AM

Naam nai gafadi cha, aba Guff dyaa ta hola ni!! :)
thinliz Posted on 17-Feb-04 09:23 PM

You got that right it's called "Customization", but at the cost of what? Don't get me wrong here - if these owners spend whatsoever amount for his/her bike (haven't seen any girls riding bizzare looking bike in the streets of Kathmandu though) it's their choice. But do they realise about the impacts they create; for instance noise. Lately I ran across Hero Honda Ambition, orginally which comes with relatively low sound, fitted with exhaust pipe Enfield. It was sounding like a amplified "Kaalo Tempo", noway did it's sound matched with rythmic sound of Enfield. People often replace broad tyres (generally bigger than originals) which certainly choke engine. Result is- engine can not combust the fuel and thereby increasing pollutants and unburnt carbons.Obivously it threats health and the environment.

Standard bikes are already causing nuisance to health and the environment. Can we afford to worsen the case with noisy, fuel guzzling, inefficient, health threatening "Customized Bikes"?

If you are really worried about pollution in the valley, there are MUCH BIGGER culprits than 20 customized bikes running around. Have u heard of DEISEL?
dada Posted on 18-Feb-04 01:49 AM

or is it DIESEL?
ulter440 Posted on 18-Feb-04 08:48 PM

Dada Ji

How on earth did you get the number 20 Twenty. Yeah there are many big problems as you call regarding pollution. But isnot it a matter of concern to react the problem when it is really growing.

Diesel, Yeah but what.

If these guys or U are really fond of these bikes or see no problem with this matter, the solution may be to purchase a sporty model of bikes, with all those fuzzy looks, why on earth damage the ones available. After all if you have money, any bike will be made available by the businessman in Nepal and also we are member of WTO.
dada Posted on 18-Feb-04 09:03 PM

Ulter,

Are you saying that a handful of customized bikes are a singificant factor in the air pollution in the valley??

Customization entails primarily changing the way a bike looks and virtually no alteration of its engine and performace. At least not in Nepal. Yes go ahead and check.
ulter440 Posted on 18-Feb-04 09:34 PM

Yeah though not significant till now. They still cannot and shouldnot be discarded. Not only with the aspect of pollution; my major concern is the safety of the riders and all those moving on congested and jammed roads of valley.

I myself have eyewitnessed many accidents caused by these bikes as the riders are willing to speed and that also in a sporty fashion. I am not only emphasizing on pollution.

And surely "Customization entails primarily changing the way a bike looks and virtually no alteration of its engine and performace" but should the customers do it on own (no problem unless it endangers others safety).

And we must not overlook the fact, engine is not the sole part of bike; the efficiency of engine also depends upon the tire it is fitted with, the exhaust pipe, and other factors also.
u_day Posted on 18-Feb-04 09:45 PM

All the custom bike haters in here, the main purpose of customization is making your product as unique as possible.
thinliz Posted on 18-Feb-04 11:59 PM

Is it just around 20 Customized Bikes in Kathmandu? Lets try to get out of number game and concentrate on the impact caused by substandarded modifiication on the machine itself.

Dada, if you are suggesting bigger vehicles like Bus or Lorry with the following lines "there are MUCH BIGGER culprits than 20 customized bikes" then you should not ignore the fact that bike contributes the much of pollution per person basis.

dada Posted on 19-Feb-04 07:07 PM

THinliz, no doubt bikes contribute to air pollution. But we are talking about CUSTOMIZED BIKES here. If people stop customizing their bikes, will the pollution subside?
thinliz Posted on 19-Feb-04 07:50 PM

It's a matter of environmental ethics. I don't except everyone on earth follow the principle laid by biocentric or gaia followers. Yet I don't ignore the fact that with the little effort from every individuals problem definitely gets subsided. I don't intend to spell out the words of hardcore conservationist or protectionist but ascribing to fact that we have just one earth and having seen the changes in chemistry of earth since decades, we need to change to pattern of our utilitarian attitude.

Definitely stoppage of Customization of Bike won't just help to restore the deteriorating air quality of Kathmandu but we can't deny it considerably aids in pollution. Greatest challenge in Kathmandu is road side dust, conventional brink kilns, adulterated fuel, unconditioned vehicles and poor road itself. If only can we come up with the solution for these issues we can have better environment around us.

Or shall we reiterate the words of Indira Gandhi, delivered at first major UN environmental conference held in Stockholm in 1972, to the effect that if pollution was the price of progress, her people wanted more of it.

Considering all the things that should really matters on the streets of Kathamndu, bike retrofits can hardly be described as a problem.

gafadi Posted on 20-Feb-04 11:34 PM

Lets think about the problem that is upto certain level.Lets fix a threshold. If no there are more customizations going on

Big Daddy Bush Customised whole UN and the whole world
Uncle Blair Customized whole people of the world
World Bank Customized a whole bunch of thirld world countries along with Nepal
IMF customized the whole least developed countries
ADB customized the Melamchi Water Project (its now on the verge of collaspe)
Germans Customized the Middle Marsayangdi Power Plant.
ENRON customized the Karnali Chisapani Project.
International Olympic Council is going to customize the forthcoming SAFF games by not allowing Nepal to participate.
GSA Emprello Customized KaliGandaki Power plant and NEA is still Paying from our money.
Chase Air Customized the whole RNAC.
Beligium customized RNA by providing M-16s
European Commission customized in the name of Human Rights.
Bhutan customized the refugee issues by fixing Nepal.
WTO customized in the name of MFN clause.
World Bank customized its defination of pollution by declaring KATHMANDU AS THE MOST POLLUTED CITY.

LETS go and fight against all this CUSTOMIZATIONS.

And there are millions of customizations going not only within this planet but beyong the planet and in the universe along with Mars and Pluto.

Should we start thinking the big one beyond our reach as an individual person. OR ignore the customization of our level beyond our reach.
