Nepal stun South Africa Wisden Cricinfo staff February 18, 2004 Nepal U19s 157 for 9 (Gauchan 51*) beat South Africa 156 (Manjeet 4-15) by one wicket Scorecard On the fourth day, the Under-19 World Cup really came alive. As if Australia's collapse against Zimbabwe wasn't enough of a surprise, along came the lowly Nepalese, who held their nerve in a thrilling finish to beat the highly fancied South Africans by one wicket with two balls of the match remaining. Nepal had showed glimmers of their potential in their opening fixture against England, where they lost by eight wickets despite setting a competitive total of 192. But forewarned was not forearmed for South Africa, who batted first and were restricted to 156 in their 50 overs. And even that total owed everything to a late rally from their No. 9 Keegan Africa, who clubbed 52 not out from 62 balls after South Africa had slipped to 62 for 7. Nepal shared their wickets around, although the pick of the bowlers was Manjeet, who tore through the top of the innings with three early wickets, as South Africa crashed to 11 for 4. He later added Godfrey Stevens for 29, to complete the highly impressive figures of 10-4-15-4. He was ably backed up by Paras Khadka, Shakti Gauchan and Lakpa Lama, with two wickets each. Nepal began their reply with a wobble as Kaniska Chaugai fell for a fourth-ball duck, but after 30 overs they were in a strong position on 95 for 4, with Gauchan going strong on 29 not out, and several capable batsmen to come. But although the run-rate was never an issue, wickets kept slipping away, until 32 were needed from the last nine overs with two men still standing. Crucially, one of these was Gauchan, and he steered his side to victory with a cool unbeaten 51. © Wisden Cricinfo Ltd

They did it again. Let's pray for England's victory! ********** Group B Nepal 195 for 5 (Gauchan 80*) beat Uganda 194 (Lama 4-40) by five wickets Scorecard Nepal moved to within sight of an unexpected place in the Super League, as their five-wicket victory over Uganda piled the pressure onto yesterday's victims, South Africa. Everything now rests on tomorrow's mouthwatering clash between South Africa and England – and all of Nepal will be praying for an English victory. Nepal were made to work hard for their victory, although it was not quite as nail-biting as their one-wicket win yesterday. Uganda won the toss and elected to bat, and at 91 for 1 in the 28th over, there was scope for an impressive total. Kintu Wambudhe contributed 46 and Denis Musali made 32, but Lakpa Lama led the fightback, picking up 4 for 40 as Uganda were pegged back to 194 all out in the 50th over. It was then over to Nepal's captain Shakti Gauchan, whose unbeaten half-century had secured that victory over South Africa. Gauchan followed up with a fine 80 not out to guide Nepal to victory with a comfortable 11 balls to spare. He was ably supported by Monick Shrestha (30) and Sharad Vesawkar (23), and South Africa have it all to do.

i have no doubt whatsoever that we are going to the west indies in 2007 for the senior world cup. with kenya and bangladesh getting one day status, they no longer have to qualify, leaving the door wide open for the likes of nepal.with the expanded format of the wc in wi, which will include 16 nations, nepal should have little trouble in qualifying. even if we manage to come 4th or 5th in the icc cup, we will qualify. scotland, holland,UAE, HK- audaciously included; who next? WE ARE GOING TO WI EVERYBODY! BUCKLE UP! dummy

Let's not forget coach Roy Dias. Miracles started to happen soon after he took over. I don't know about his contract with Nepali team but many other nations may have interest to aquire him. We have to keep him at any cost. He was one of the best players of Srilankan national team and he has proven he is a great coach. I want to see him coach our team in the world cup.

Yes Mr. Dias has made significant influence on the improvement of Nepalese team and this is a wonderful sight into the future. Hats off once again to Captain Gauchan who kept cool at the required time to guide Nepal to victory. I hope the English beat South Africans and that will be absolutely awesome to see Nepal to the next round. Its cricket and anything can happen.

Damn english lost to SA. No good news at all. I bet there was a conspiracy. we are still proud of you boyz. I hope nepal will credit the coach Dias with gorkha dakshinthe bahu (?) if they have not done yet. He is the main reason that our boyz are getting to played in these international cricket tournaments.
