I am a child who lives in the street I have so much to say Maybe once I will get my day? I have a point to make Before my heart begins to ache There is a purpose in my life But now I can be no one's wife Because I am a street girl, nobody cares No one stops to see my tears And there is no one to listen to what I got to say I was playing down the lane, one fine day And my father took me to a women's place, told me to obey She gave me a job She gave me a home She gave me a family And she gave me a life That I had never asked for. It was late at night I had to "work" A gentleman came He said it was a game It was something that I had never played before It was something that I had never done before I didn't want to work I didn't want to play My body felt numb,I couldn't feel anything From head to to arm, from leg to heel But he said he had already paid I was so afaird On the bed I just laid How can I tell anyone, what he had done? Is there anyone who even cares? No one believes and no body cares Even though what he had done was bad Even though what he had done was wrong All I could think about was atleast I am not a burden to my parents anymore! Well, something that made me feel that we always make such a fuss about some trivial things.Create huge problems out of banalities. We grieve about meaningless unimportant matters, instead of being happy and thankful for such wonderful life..Everyday young girls(mind you very young children age 5-13+) are sold by their own family where they have neither hope nor future. As for some family a daughter is just another mouth to feed. There is no whining because there they do not know differently.Actually it is rather unfair to behave like a mimosa in front of such misery.Isn t it actually arrogant? Maybe we should think about such things?Maybe we would see things with different eyes? But who in this world has time for others?

Very meaningful, indeed! Not only the poem gently touches on the reality of misfortuned women/girls, but the powerful epilogue by the author also is as touching and thought-provoking! BRAVO!!!

* 360,000 Nepalese women are held in India's brothels. * As an illustration, it is believed that 200,000 of the prostitutes in India are Nepalese. 20% are thought to be under 16. *The number of Nepalese girls and women engaged in prostitution in Calcutta exceeds 27,000, in Delhi it is more than 21,000, in Gorakhpur it is 4,700 and in Banaras it is 3,480. * In Bombay, India, at least half of the city's 100,000 prostitutes are believed to be Nepalese girls * Half of 100,000 girl prostitutes between 10-14 in Bombay are from Nepal and are kept in brothels against their will. * The trafficking of children is a considerable problem. While accurate numbers are not available, it is estimated that 5000-7000 Nepalese girls are annually trafficked out of Nepal to India, and increasingly, to the Gulf States for prostitution purposes * 15,000 Nepalese women and 19,000 children are kidnapped, lured, trafficked and sold into different cities of India. * 20%-30% of commercial sex workers in India have been trafficked from Nepal * The trafficking of girls from Nepal into India for the purpose of prostitution is probably the busiest 'slave traffic' of its kind anywhere in the world. * Hong Kong is the second biggest market for trafficked Nepalese women Although child prostitution has been around for thousands of year but hasn't been given too much attention to it.It is believed that poverty and culture where men are thought to be in higher esteem than women child prostitution occurs. If a family has limited resources, it is frequently the male children who are educated, therefore they grow up with more options than their sisters. In most cases a female child is a financial liability for a family. Perhaps this makes it more likely that a family in crisis would see the sex trade as a viable option for their daughters, specially in country like Nepal. Children bought back to Nepal are not even given the opportunity for a new and better life. Many, who are lucky enough to get out of this life will encounter almost insurmountable obstacles in their path. Their biggest stumbling block is likely to be their family and community. These children are generally ostracized from the only other life they knew. Many child prostitutes become chemical abusers as a means of coping with this life. They turn to drugs, or alcohol, or solvents as a way to numb themselves against the pain they are feeling. Child prostitutes often find that life after prostitution involves pornography or other types of criminal activity. The only "marketable skills" the child may have is for the sex trade or thievery.

yes Nescient.. wat u hav written and captured in ur poem makes us all think abt the little things in life that we take for granted n makes us appreciate dat we are not in the position of those poor girls who are sold n made to do such vile things against their will... anyone who has been deeply touched by that mail can help.. by going on the Maiti Nepal website and make donations to help maiti nepal people rescue these unfortunate girls from brothels in India and Nepal, there are people who work hard to save girls and make a new and happier start to their lives. Lets think abt our own lives n how blessed we have been.. thanku for reading.. Anita....X

Nescient, I applaud your bio-psycho-social appraisal of an unfortunate fact in most places of the world. I heard once that awareness is the first step toward change. And your poem strives to bring that first step to bear. In peace.
