San dai and all those concerned, I thought ethnic bashing was out. In San's dai thread on ethnic bashing, someone used racist comment on neapli_angel. Ok this is between the two of them and we have no need to interefere but as I went further along, I saw """""You Nepali Boksi, your ancestars were wise enough to do intercaste marriage with the Mongol women without caste discrimination and equally gave chance to the Mongols to rise. But you present Bahuns are corrupt and hypocrites like Koiralas, madhavnepals, etc. """"""""" Now hold on a minute pal, didn't u read San's messages will be banned and you actually have the gall to say such racist comment in his thread. Wow, that's something. Can't we for once and for all stop stop stop grrrrrrrrrrrrr stop ethnic bashing. I don't know Nepali_angel. But I read some of her postings and she does have a sense of humor and what she is saying are making sense. so why are people after her?????? San dai, I really feel u just ban all these kinda people. Freedom of speech does not mean you can bash any caste. I have Koirala friends and he is not related to Gririja and even if he was no big deal, when u say Koirala it means all Koirala. So either we specify else leave the matter alone!!!!!!!!! No offence intended. |

Meera I think you need to lighten up. In a forum, arguments/verbal fights are bound to happen. I think you need to just accept these things. It ain't a perfect world - egos are gonna clash, people are emotional by nature, and so these things will happen again and again. |

I'm not going to continue the proliferation of ethnic bashing, but there is nothing wrong if we discuss Nepali history on sajha.com as nepali_angel has sought to do so. She told me to start a thread for this. I 'm goin to start a thread on such topic and It was she who started the discussion on Chetri community. |

Thanks for the defense, Meera, but I will handle this one myself. I didn't find it even a bit offensive that Suresh opted to call me bauksi. These things do happen online. We're living in a virtual world, after all. Certainly, we can talk about ethnic differences without resorting to name-calling, which I would very much like to do on this thread. Firstly, let me start out by saying that what we are concerned with is mostly anthropology rather than history, with some overlaps between the two fields. Here we have is the hierarchy of the caste system, with bahuns on top and untouchables on the bottom. Among the tagadharis, the upadhyas reside on top. My supposition would have been that the Thakuris are just a subgroup of the Chettri cate, and so it should be, but the caste hierarchy in that link is in an arrangement such that even "superiority" between subcastes have been listed. Firstly, let's deal with the bahun castes. Now this is what I believe. Nepal does not have any caste groups that are 100% pure. Certainly, there are bahuns with epicanthic folds and flattish noses, who could pass for Newars any time of the day, but these people are a minority and do not represent the group as a whole. As can be inferred from target=_blank>http://www.hri.ca/partners/insec/Yb1993/Append_65.shtml"> this link various Nepali ethnic groups were created from the union of two main races, the "indigenous" Kirants, and the high caste Indian expatriates who came from the south to escape persecution by the Muslims. In fact, it is claimed in that link I provided that Nepal's Rajputs do have significant Magar admixture. I think everybody knows this. To remind you of what the deceased prince Dipendra looked like, here is a picture. click here Clearly, Dipendra does not look like your typical bahuns who looks more like this: < a target=new href="http://peterpalms.com/graphics/nepal.jpg">click this link The so-called Chetris are divided into two groups, jharra and thimbu, the former being "pure" and the latter being of "mixed" ancestry. However when given the fact that even bahuns have significant magar blood, I don't think jharra chettris are all that pure either. In fact, if Chettris have two subgroups that have significant admixture(thakuris and thimbus), then it is quite impossible for the Jharras to keep their "purity". In fact, it is impossible. However, what I really am interested to read are articles on Y-chromosome and mtdna analyses of Nepali bahuns, chettris, and "indigenous" groups and the comparisons, for the determination of how much "foreign" blood each group has. Unquestionably, it will be concluded, in my mind, that bahuns are the least mixed among these groups. This is nothing to be proud of, but is an irrefutable fact. |

NA.."Among the tagadharis, the upadhyas reside on top. " Go tell that to Keshari Raj Pandey or one of the Kumain Brahmin Gurjus or even Ashu:) and see how they like your assertion. NA you did make derogatory statements against other ethnic groups. Face up to the fact. Are you a member of the Nepali Aryan Nation? How come most of the Gods in the holy scriptures are of Kshtriya clan...Rama, Buddha..etc? |

I was just explaining the hierarchy. Of course, it does not mean that one has to agree it, but that's just how it is. Another thing, Indian and Nepali castes are not equivalent...Nepali caste has more to do with ethnicty...Indian castes don't. A hindu Jat from the Punjab region looks no different from a Khatri or a brahmin. This is not the case in Nepal. As for Kumaonis, they probly think they're better than Upadhyays...and vice versa. I think you are just mad that I believe everyone in nepal is mixed up, including bahuns, so you are bringing up this "NA is a Nepali Aryan nation member" BS. My grandfather actually had 6 wives, one of them was a Newar. Curiously though, the descendents are now taken as brahmins for some reason or another. Not even once did I mention the word "Arya" because if anybody has the right to use that word, it's those from Northwestern India, not Nepalis. |

nepali_angel, meaning nepali pari or apsara. I was not the first to call you Boksi, it was BMW who called u bausi. I am glad to know that you have a good knowledge of nepali anthropology and caste heirarchy. I was enraged when you called the Chetris as descendants of anly Bahun men and Magar women. But I would suggest you to read some researched books on colonial historiography and it's critics, because the interpretations on caste in Nepal was given by the colonial British writers and their representation of Nepali society was influenced by the view that western societies tending to merge and becoming progressive and eastern ones preserving the old traditions and remaining aloof with one another resulting in backwardness in every respects. If you are proud to be a brahman then I would like to ask you few questions. EKAM SAD VIPRA BAHUDHA VADANTI. In which Veda, is it found? Name the parts of Vedas. What is the difference between Advaitism and Vishistha advaita? Who was Vishwamitra? On how many Upanishads has Shankracharya written Bhasyas? What do you mean by the word Brahman? |
