Hi all, Now that San the Man is here in Kathmandu (and so are a few other Sajha-wallahs from various parts of the world for a short while), how about having 2nd Sajha Gathering in KTM at some point soon? The gathering could take the form of: a) big dinner at some restaurant, or b) reserving a bus and going for day-long picnic or travel to places like Dhulikhel or Nagarkot (i.e. helping promote domestic tourism in these dire times!), or c) whatever else that people want to do. [The rumor is that today and for the next four days, there will be Nepal Bandhs.] Najar and Brook, if you are reading this, what do you think? Let's put our heads together, and use San's being here as another pleasant excuse to meet and do guff-suff. oohi "NOT in a Bandh mood at all" ashu ktm, nepal

M.P. It's DECIDED then: It's going to be called "2nd decisive Sajha gathering". :-) Question: How many Sajha-wallahs does it take to screw in a light bulb? (Those who send in correct answers will each be awarded two puriya of chow chow of their choice. San will present the awards at the gathering!!) oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Question: How many Sajha-wallahs does it take to screw in a light bulb? None! They'll break it by falling on their faces trying to stand on a rickety Nepalese cheap chair in a dusty room with all the sunlight you need coming in the room..... "Chim jalekoi chhaina", San will pronunce, when it is too late.

Here is a guest entry: (for I wont be there to "grahan garosh" the fabulous prize from San in the unlikely scenario that I get the right answer.) ---> It all depends on the number, n, of total Sajha-wallahs and the relative elasticity of time each Sajha-wallah has. With no offense to anybody, I count some of them below: --one Sajha-wallah to claim how the Bahuns had screwed UP the light bulb. --another to blame the ranas and the shahs --a third one to say how the hindus did not know how to screw in the light bulb --a fourth one to post an article with a different perspective on how the light bulb was a very good institution! --a fifth one to describe how the bulb had made a perfect night for her --a sixth Sajha-wallah to respond to that --a seventh one to provide a brief historical perspective on how the light bulb was related to the baise-raja of Palpa and his beautiful hometown of Chitwan --a eighth one to covert everything into a gazal and post it here --rastafariya --a tenth one to describe how the light bulb was related to his professor at Harvard --an eleventh one to appear after a week or so and post "I am back" as if he was the President of the United States. --a twelfth one to talk about how the bulb light reflected the discriminations against women in our society --a thirteenth (sp?)one to show his recently-learnt American slangs-- let's lite da bob! --a fourteenth one to instigate war by saying that everybody posting here from foreign countries were hypocrites and that they had no right to talk on national affairs --five to "live" in Sajha chat to make sure that the bulb didn't go out --a 20th one to come to Sajha and look for his "old friends" --of course, there should be a 21th Sajha person, to post here how he had given up lightning the bulb the previous week, but could not resist and therfore had to light the bulb again this weekend. I should close the browser before people come here and start cursing me. M.P.

Sounds like a good idea Ashu dai. Personally, I'm quite bored with the restaurant scene in KTM and would much rather prefer going out somewhere for a picnic-type day trip to the regular lunch dinner affair. Let's find out what people want to do? How about going out camping for a night? Are there any safe places to camp?

Hey Montou bhai, How are you? So good to see you back. I hope you come to the gathering, i will soon e-mail you via sajha. Please call/e-mail me hai. For others, I am not that good an organizer, plus my extensive travel schedule is making it worse. Any inconvenience is regretted. So, for the sake of convenience and ease, this time we are meeting at Cafe Jatra, on Thursday at around 5:30 ishpm in thamel (around Barnes and Nobel/Pilgrims book store). Ashuji, will you please help me here? I haven't been there myself but hear its pretty good. Sorry Brook, could not plan Camping this time around, perhaps next time. We could've met over the weekend, but from what i understand its a bit difficult for Sanji, and i myself will be out of the country starting the same weekend. Hope to see ya all at Cafe Jatra on Thu evening. Might not be able to communicate with all...So San, Ashu, Jira, paschim, vivid, Prista, Brook, Torilaure, Montou, Villagevoicedai, and all others in town (silent readers/active sajhaites) sabai laai chulo nimtaa...doesn't mean i am picking the tab! :) Ashuji, would it be possible for you to check if Manishaji would be interested to come. Would be fun if she can.

Jatra is a pretty cool place. Once upon a time, it used to be my second home. I love the place. Make sure you try sukuti with coke/fanta/sprite/beer/rum/whiskey/brandy - depending on your preferance. If people who are participating in the event have time and would like to know about Jatra, here's a piece that I wrote a year (?) ago: (ahhhh I miss those kathmandu checking out restaurants days) Jatra loving Kathmandu has a new jatra to celebrate these days. Its jatra everyday at the jatra café in thamel. If java is sandwiched between starbuck’s and Nepali chiya pasal, then imagine a place sandwiched between a top-notch Italian restaurant in Manhattan and your favorite momo pasal. yeah, you got the picture right.. yeah, its what you just visualized. If you are looking for a “east meets west” kind of place in Kathmandu, then head straight to Jatra—opposite of the famous Helena’s Bakery Café/ a minute’s walk from the roadhouse and right next to the AGFA studio. Want to have a drink or get drunk at the only bar in town with a tree? A shot of Kalbhairav to give you Bhairav’s strength to drink more or a glass of Martini to bring out the James Bond in you (Come on, not many of us can resist this temptation)? If hard liquor is not the beverage of your choice, what about some tato tato momo and chiso chiso beer at the dining room, while spending hours and hours trying to figure out what exactly you are looking at on those abstract paintings that greet you everywhere at Jatra. If you are allergic to alcohol, what about Columbian Coffee or Nepali Chiya to keep you warm while you make plans for the day/evening? If you are simply looking for a place to be alone, think and let your imagination run wild (or sober), Jatra is the place to be. Jatra customers: 1. Teenagers 2. Professionals 3. Expatriates 1. Unlike Java teenagers, Jatra teenagers seem to be more down to earth and connected to the reality. There are sub-groups within this group: a) Lovebirds These people head straight to the main dining hall. These people tend to occupy “nepali-sitting arrangement” (very similar to the sitting arrangements you see at authentic Japanese restaurants in DC and elsewhere in the world). Cross legged and hands resting on the low table, these lovebirds sit there for hours listening to each other and at the same time get their weekly dosage of momo and coffee (and in rare cases marpha and sukuti). b) Groups: Teenagers come here to celebrate their birthdays. The groups usually have 8-12 members (most of the time its either girls only or guys only group). These people occupy the big table at the center of the main dining hall. This “celebration” group is seen there from 5-7:30 PM (max). If it’s a girly group, then they order wine.. If it’s a Band of Brothers, then beer, beer and beer keeps on coming. Some members of these groups are coooool because they smoke. The chosen cigarette brand of the band of sisters is Surya lights or Marlboro lights, whereas brothers tend to go with Shikhar and Surya Regular. 2. Professionals: These people come after 5-6 and sit in the terrace. The dinner menu is created to provide these over-worked under-paid young professionals of Nepal their daily supply of 4000 calories. Who can resist the temptation to eat yummy fettuccini, ravioli or lasagna with beer/brandy/whiskey after a hard day’s work while listening to the 1974 AD (the official band of Jatra’s) and looking at those teen-agers having fun? Can you? I can’t. Don’t forget, the feeling you get by talking politics with your friends who do not seem to challenge you is PRICELESS! 3. Expatriates: Expatriates seem attracted to Jatra because of its location, the set-up, food that you can eat without fearing to wake up sick the next morning and the abstract paintings. Note, these are expats, not your regular $1-thamel-tourists (these are the people who spend only a dollar a day!!). These expats come here, they prefer the outdoor sitting which probably gives them nostalgia of café’s of Europe. They sit there, drink Carlsberg with tacos (drink and appetizer), eat steak for dinner and pies for dessert. (Note: Nepali customers usually satisfy themselves with momo, sukuti and beer and boneless chicken and any of the Italian dishes). These are nice people (or they simply put on the elaborate façade of niceness because they know nepali brothers act first and think later). Old expats are heard giving orientation to the new comers (dude, yeah.. Nepalis have a machine or something that makes them invisible..The other day I was walking in Thamel and I heard a whisper asking me to buy hash.. I looked around and there was no one.. again after 5 mins. I heard the same whisper.. looked around.. and saw no one there so I am pretty sure that these people are not what they seem to be—simple and harmless.. stay alert, be careful…) Management: 3 young, energetic and friendly Nepalis own Jatra. They make every effort to make your visit to Jatra a nice experience. And because of this friendly management, you see loyal customers who just keep on coming to Jatra. If you are in town, and want to experience something different, then head straight to Jatra. If you find Jatra different than what I have written let me know, I will take you to any place of your choice (but you have to pay the bill :)
