How is a song distinguished from a gajal. I know that you can feel the difference. But is there a certain musical nuisance that differentiates them. Any musical guru in sajha? For example is the following a gajal? or song? 'Na Kajare Ki Dhar’ by pankaj udas in film mohara. |

Biruwa ji, I am not a musical whiz, but I guess I can answer your query. Ghazal is more a poetic form than a musical one. The lyrics of the above song is not a ghazal. So from lyrics's point of view, it is not a ghazal. From the musical point of view, traditional ghazal singing is loosely considered as an offshhot of semi-classical music genre like thumri, dadra, tappa etc. However, there is no fixed pattern for ghazal singing. Following links may be helpful to understand what is and what is not ghazal. - http://chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/gazal.html - http://www.ebazm.com/ghazal.htm |
