Does anyone know if a permanent resident of US (Nepali citizen) would require a UK visa or a entry clearance to study in UK as a semester abroad student (less then 6 months)?

Yes, you do need visa to go to UK even if you are permanent resident of US. Give yourself atleast one month if you are posting your passport to UK embassy in US. You also need to send your copy of permanent resident card, if you are college student then college enrollment as well, bank statement, money order for visa fees. Even if you are PR u have to prove them that u are coming back to US.

According to FAQ no. 5 on the following webpage, one does not need a visa/entry clearance to go to UK on a study abroad for less then 6 months. I wonder if that is only for US citizens or also applies to US permanent residents.

I went to UK for couple of week on June of 2003 and right after they see your passport (nepali) UK embassy will ask you all kinds of document even if you are a PR doesn't matter. But my case and yours is different..i went there to visit whereas u are going there to study ...so there might be different rules..but as far as i know u have to apply for the VISA...
On the other hand if u are US citizen then u don't have to apply for visa at all whether to visit or study..
