At a recent musical jam up session at my place, I was talking to a friend about Nepali music. Being far away from home and having a pair of speakers that are irreparable can very much make one aloof from the nepali music scene especially when one is too lazy to replace those speakers and when one has no choice but to depend entirely on the Internet to listen to songs online. Anyway, I was asking this friend about who the up and coming talented nepali singers were and whose songs he enjoyed listening. He told me that he really liked Karna Das among the contemporary singers. "Karna Das? Who’s he?" I asked. "The guy who sang "jindagi ko k bharosa," my friend replied. Then it struck me because not only was I familiar with the popular song, but also with the whole Madhyanna band as they were from the same area I grew up in, in Pokhara not to mention the fact that my cousin was one of the band members. Whatever happened to the band but the name Karna Das nowadays seems to have become synonymous with the likes of Arun Thapa and Deep Shrestha. Except for my cousin, I do not recall the other band members very well but I vividly remember seeing these very young guys quite often with guitars in their hands gathering in the roadside at the bus stop in front of KC restaurant; where they would create music and sing other nepali songs, with people surrounding them as listeners. It had somewhat become sort of a ritual for them much to the dismay of my cousin’s parents who wanted their son to focus in his studies rather than music. I do not know much about Karna Das as to how he started his career and his road to success in the Nepali music industry. However, as a fellow Pokhreli and a lover of Nepali music, I am very proud of him. It’s not just the voice that is unique but his ability to sing the songs in a way that touches the soul of his listeners is what I found very captivating. With songs like Jindagi ko k bharosa, Anautho betha bhayecha and Bistarai chayo, Das has had tremendous impact on his fans and needless to say, he has also brought freshness in the whole music arena. I hope he will continue to enamour us with his soulful voice thus keeping the music alive. |

I do not know how popular Karna Das is in Nepal, but I have been listening to his songs all the time since the beginning of February. It seems like I will never get tired. His voice is unique and words are touchy--in contrast to many pop singer who seem to slightly rephrase the words and sing them again and again and, more boringly, in the same style (if you ask me, I can recognize Navin Bhattarai's voice from miles away. :) It is understandable that most of the pop/modern songs are love songs. But, there is something that distinguishes Deep Shrestha's, Karna Das's, Lochan Bhattarai's songs from that of other singers such as Mohan Bhusal, Navin Bhattarai, or some random band from Itahari. The rachanaakaars are to be partly blamed, I guess. Here are some of Karna Das's songs that nobody should miss: Purano Dunga Timro Mero Sambandha ko Thulaa Thulaa Mahal Hoina Bistarai Chhayo We once praised 1974AD so much for their song "Bacha ra Bachna Deu". Thulaa Thulaa Mahal Hoina is as marmik as that! |

If the song, Berthai Feri Ghaeti Mutu, is his, then along with all the other songs, he's a tremendous singer. I think it's his song. Can any body check? |

Heard of his song but I guess I am not a person who likes to listen to this kind of depressing songs over and over again. As a matter of fact, I just went to cybernepal.com.np and saw new artiste featured there.I guess in Nepali music industry there are countless number of people who follows that norm set by other artsite and just follow them without really trying out different.Nepali music industry in another word is just like Hindi movie; there hero, heroine, villian and lots of dancing. So you c who in the world give a damn to those Bollywood stars or directors. They dare not go against the norm that has been praticed for so many donkey years. Who said you must try to sing like Narayan Gopal or any other artiste to be good.Nobody said that.In fact people respect you for being who you are and for your uniquenes. Don't just ape to be accepted. Luckliy there is somebody who is daring enough to defy music industry of Nepal and try his own way. To find out about this guy just go to cybernepal.com.np. By the way the content of this posting is loosely based on what is writen about this new artiste. Regards, Bhanja(Singapore) |

Dilasha, first of all big 'Hiiiii' from far east. I also never heard this name "Karna Das" before, but I know that "Jindagiko k barosa" is a good song. Yes, judging from this song, he's more like Deep Shrestha- one of the contemporary singers of my time. |

Thanks M.P for listing those song titles. Like I said one has to listen to Das in order to truly understand the depth of his talent. Hyallo Rusty!! how goes it in the "far" east? is it really that far? :) btw, we're organizing a helluva cool new year's party in "da midwest" in april...you should hop on NWA and come on over. Bhanja ji, I hear ya....often times I too have wondered why people in our region like to be "typecast" be it in the movies portraying the same kind of role à la Shahrukh Khan or in music singing the same kind of songs. I guess the artistes are too afraid of being rejected in something different than what they have found their niche on. Hence people like Das may always end up singing emotional sometimes depressing songs while Nabin Bhattarai may always cater to only the young genre and Govinda may never try out different roles other than comedy. I don't blame them actually. However I admire the ones who like to explore different territories while sticking to their original appeal, which as a matter of fact reminds me of this Indian actor whose recent movie I watched. I'm not a huge fan of Indian movies but Ajay Devgan, seems to have defied the so called "rules" of conformity and have proven that just because a "hero" portrays a negative role, doesn't mean that people will stop appreciating one's work. He's become one helluva versatile actor. I really liked his work in Khakee which i'm sure you guys must've seen. |

I am not really a fan of Hindi movies.Main reason the role of the hero or heroine is not potrayed as strongly as Hollywood ones.Movies budget aside Bollywood actors and actress stand a good chance to be compared with the best in the world. But the truth is they will never be considered till they really undergo the proper training or live the life of the character they are playing. In the music arena, Nepal has come long.Gone are the days that people would associate themselves with Adhunik geet and gazal music. With opening of Nepal, the outside influence which once used to be Indian now is the things of the past. People now has access to anything. It is no wonder that this influence from outside world now translate to various type of music and others. I guess it is norm that people would limit themselvs within their comfort zone and will never venture out beyond for fear of unknown result. And when there are people who go beyond thier comfort zone people notice them. Some become successful while others just wither. One the band that defy the norm was Nepathya.Look at them now !!!! Anyway, beside Nepathya there are many upcoming bands and individual who has done or going to do something different.Good luck to these groups individual. No guts no glory !! Recently, after reading the posting here, I drop by cybernepal.com.np to check out thier latest update. There was this guy with new album. After reading the rave review about this guy,I cliked his promo songs expecting to hear typical voice or like those hindi back up singers (Udit Narayan) even though the review compared him Bryan Adams. Well, well after listening all his promo songs, I am more than convinced that this guy indeed is damn good and has a long way to go.What a boon for the Nepal music industry, now she can boast and heave a sigh of relief that there is one individual who will inject some real life to the boring music industry. To find out just surf into cybernepal.com.np and u will know who I am talking about. |
