Lewis Lapham is a famous American editor. He edits Harper's Magazine, surely one the wittiest, sharpest and well-written and well-edited magazines in America. Each issue of the magazine opens with a section called "Readings", which includes varioualy entertaining stuff culled from "zines, corporate memos, books and elsewhere". What follows, then, is a PUBLIC letter sent out by an NGO to its donors and well-wishers, and I hope this counts as an act of minor homage to Lapham, Nepali-style. Hehehe...one person's humor piece is a serious *nibandha* for another. :) "On March 5, 2004, FWLD in collaboration with ABC/Nepal, LACC, FEDO, Sancharika Samuha, Maiti/Nepal, Pro-Public, Women's Studies Course, P.K Campus, CMC and CWAD appealed to call off the Bandh on March 8, 2004." --> This Bandh is becoming a national issue. If this trend of organizing Bandh for no reason continues, I will not be surprised if someday Bandh--like dowry--becomes a way to exhibit one's power and prestige in the society. Imagine seeing an advertizement in the Gorkhapatra that reads: "Aaudo mangsir 7 gate haamraa suputra sri X ko sri so and so ki suputri sushri Y sanga huna gairaheko bibhaha ko sukhad upalakchhemaa tesdin sab kal-kaarkhaana, bidhyaalaya, sarkari kaaryalaya banda garidinu huna saparibaar anurodh gardachhoun!" :) Even if such a day does not come, Bandh will definitely be one of the first few words our children will be learning (ganatantra, regression, maobadi are some other words. All our children will be learning these Nepali SAT words early in their lives. Not bad). |
