Nepali cab driver stabbed to death in Australia
Unknown passenger(s) stabbed a 45-year-old Nepali cab driver to death in Brunswick, Australia on Thursday night, agency reports said Saturday.
Benu Prasad-Adhikari, of Rowville was murdered when he was attacked by at least one person in his taxi behind units in Garnet Street about 10pm, the reports said.
Adhikari's 17-year-old son, Ujwal was speaking to his father by phone when he was stabbed to death, the reports said. Ujwal heard the sound of a struggle moments before his father's mobile phone cut out, The Age said.
"Just before he said goodbye, I heard noises and then the phone cut off. I heard someone say, 'Run, run, run', and then scuffle noises," Ujwal said.
"Ujwal said his father had earlier asked the male passenger how he was going to pay for the ride and was told by the man to drive to a friend's home."
Adhikari had migrated from Nepal to Australia eight years ago.
The murder was one of two attacks on taxi drivers on Thursday night, which prompted police to warn drivers to take care when picking up passengers, The Age further said.
