Hi all, Grew up in SIngapore where most people are either into soccer or basketball.I have read many articles about Nepali team playing going here and there for their test match. I wonder what makes the crocket interesting??? For me not knowing the game, I find it damn slow and boring. Not like soccer where speed and skill is needed from an individual.Soccer has indeed won many fans due to the dazzling skill of players like Maradona (nobody can come close to home),Pele, Ronaldo and more. As cricket is slow,it seems to require lesser running n speed.People who want to keep feet by doing some heavy breathing might hesitate taking this sport. Any cricket fan want to enlighten me about cricket??? |

CRICKET: INDIA'S PASSION, AMERICA'S INSECT If there's one major downside to living in America, particularly for people of South Asian origin, it's that cricket takes a backseat to almost everything. Ask the average American man if he likes to watch cricket and he'll say, "No way. They're far too noisy. I'd much rather watchgrasshoppers." But ask the average Indian man if he likes to watch cricket and he'll fly into a rage, tearing at his hair and shouting, "Cricket! Don't ask me about cricket! I'm not talking about cricket until we beat those $%&* Aussies!" Most Americans are more familiar with Jennifer Aniston's bra size than the rules of cricket. Many don't even realize it's a sport, let alone a popular one. They may claim to be experts on bowling, but don't ask them to name a single pacer or spinner. The sports network ESPN gives American viewers hardly a second of cricket news, preferring to televise more popular sports such as log-rolling and nose-picking. Cricket doesn't even merit as much coverage as the National Spelling Bee, though most of the young contestants, unlike cricket fans, have no idea how to spell "Harbhajan" and "Tendulkar." The spelling champ is often honored on the front page of USA Today and other top newspapers. For cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar to receive that much attention, he'd have to go on a batting rampage, clubbing his opponents to death. Even then, it probably wouldn't be the top story in America, especially if Jennifer Aniston gets a new hairdo. While the 2003 Cricket World Cup captivated a billion people in India -- many of them praying not for their own health but for Ashish Nehra's sprained ankle -- thousands of Indians in America had to shell out $299.95 to DISH network for the privilege of throwing objects at their TVs. "Come on, Ganguly!" they screamed. "You're batting like my grandma!" India's early-round loss to Australia sparked a frenzy that few Americans could fathom, even with the aid of beer. Fans in Kolkata staged a mock funeral for captain Sourav Ganguly, while those in Mumbai burned posters of Ganguly, Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, displaying enough venom to frighten an army of cobras. Judging by the anger, you would have thought the cricketers had done something dreadful, such as wearing the colors of Pakistan. Losing to such a formidable foe would have caused a mere ripple in most countries, but produced a monsoon in India, with cricket fans staying up all night to think of ways to torture the players. Mumbai fan: "We'll paint Ganguly's head and pull Tendulkar'snails off." Friend: "No, yaar. Let's paint Tendulkar's nails and pullGanguly's head off." Imagine the pressure on the Indian team when they facedPakistan a few days later. Ganguly: "OK, team, here's the plan. If we win, we're dancing all night. If we lose, we're defecting to South Africa." Meanwhile, in America, most people were far more relaxed, their country not embroiled in cricket matches, just the prospect of war. Few had any clue that a World Cup was taking place, which made it easier on some cricket fans. Computer programmer: "Hello boss. I won't be coming to work today. I'm not feeling well again." Boss: "That's too bad, Ramesh. Have you seen a doctor?" Programmer: "Yes, boss. Dr. Gupta is here right now, checking my blood pressure. I hope my health insurance covers this. It's costing me $299.95." Source: http://www.melvindurai.com/cricket.htm |

>>>Grew up in SIngapore where most people are either into soccer or basketball.I have read many articles about Nepali team playing going here and there for their test match. FIRSTLY, Nepal has not got chance to play the TEST MATCH yet. The recent Team included in the TEST MATCH list is Bangaladesh after their win over PAK in the world cup. There is a vast difference between ODI and TEST. >>>I wonder what makes the crocket interesting??? Crocket = cricket. It's null for those who r not interested. It's much and much more for those who understands it. Interesting phase usually comes during the end of Second Inning (Usually). E.g. the last match b/n pak n ind... u can read the news. If u r blind supporter of one team, automatically the inner interest will hit u. Also, many show their interest how the the batsman plays..... the way, the bowler throws the ball and target the STUMP ( ||| ) .. can't describe here why it is interesting... one has to just fall in it. >>>>For me not knowing the game, I find it damn slow and boring. Not like soccer where speed and skill is needed from an individual.Soccer has indeed won many fans due to the dazzling skill of players like Maradona (nobody can come close to home),Pele, Ronaldo and more. Yes, u can be rite cuz many have the same perception as urs. Just hold the bat and run between the wickets. Then, u will come to know it's slow or boring or easy to run !!!!!!!!!!!!! .......it's not a cup of tea. No doubt, SOCCER has gained the fame and fans all over the world. There are many well known players in cricket too.... u just google it.. u will get the no. of lists. U can visit "INDIA VS. PAKISTAN: THE BATTLE BEGINS" thread created by Krishna to know more abt it. Cricket was invented in the 1800’s so that Englishmen could get away from their wives and girlfriends. Some hasty whispering in the country club over port and cigars and they came up with a brilliant plan: the five-day test match. Voila, you have the perfect excuse for the lads to pack up their kit and head off for days on end, ostensibly to play games. One had to traverse long distances to get to the match, the further the better. So it took seven days to get to where the festivities were taking place, a few days to rest up, five more to play the match and a few more to celebrate. All told, it usually was a month long expedition. (Incidentally, that’s how the new fangled tradition of ‘time to myself’ started.) “But dahling, I can’t let the lads down, they’re depending on me to defend the honour of Indore. Those louts from the Barrackpore Hussars out of think no end of themselves and its time someone taught them a lesson or two. Its only fitting that we take up the task to sort our those bleeders.” Then the lads marched off. Another innovation in this unique game is the afternoon tea break. Cricket is the only game where the players stop for tea before continuing on with the game. Quite rightly so too, after all, the ladies in pavilion did feel so left out of it all, there being only so much hat waving they could do on a hot day. A bit of crumpet at tea-time did so rejuvenate the sporting spirit and all. With the raj in decline, the newly independent former colonies decided to keep laying the game. The south Asians were quick learners and saw great value in retaining the cricketing tradition. Nowadays, it provides an excellent opportunity for the viewing audience to switch to a sporting channel, there being only so much time anyone can put up with the dribble on Zee TV! Being a sporting man and all, perhaps Bhanja would next care to delve into the mysterious sport of ‘American football’ where a large bunch of men jump atop each other ostensibly in search of a misshapen 'ball.' There's even a bawdy football song about some who head to San Francisco with flowers in their hair. |

czar, I liked the way you explained the origin of cricket. At times, it seems like the cricket match is never ending game played just for friendliness, or else, how would you explain so many draws in test matches? I would rather play 29 than the test matches. Play days and days, and end up in a draw? |

"Play days and days, and end up in a draw??" See that's the beauty! No one goes away winning or losing! Both parties leave satisfied! These guys know what conflict resolution ...& life in general is all about ;-)! In jest, as _Sade would write! |

Many People love the game of cricket becuase they really love it and many people hate it just because so many people love this game. There was a time when Test matches were played defensively and used to end up in a "draw". Not any more. Unless there is a rain interruption or if it is played on a dead wicket I do not think modern Test matches ar played just to have a friendly "draw". With the resurgence of Australia as an undisputed unofficial champion of Test matches along with the demise of once almigty West Indies, Test matches are more thrilling to watch. If you have passion for the game like me and like millions others then you would ; if not you would find it boring as ignorance is a bliss kind of deal just like million other people who find American football as a "bull fighting" game. |

Bhanja, everything is interesting if you get hang of it. One of my American friends thinks soccer sux coz they hardly make any score. He compares that with American football where the total score usually goes beyond 50. I advise him to watch cricket... eh.. where the total score falls somewhere between 300 to 700+. I still go for soccer tho... soccer rulez! :) |

Hmmm.I guess by now I understand the game already.But.... you know people I merely started this thread to widen my understanding about this sport which has many follower in coutnries like, India,Nepal,Pakistam and more. Furthermore, I started with a heading that might have angered die hard cricket fans.So acidic words were expected for reply but none of them turn out to that way.I must say people were very helpful in educating me on cricket. Though my understanding of the game is l now, I think I will never be engage in this sport.First and foremost nobody in SIngapore likes to play this sport, except for some Indians. Last but not least thankx for the trouble taken to educate this(me) ignorant fellow. Let Peace Reign In Nepal http://uk.geocities.com/nepalimusik regards, Rai Bhanja (Singapore) |

It was during the 92 world cup that I got the first hang of Cricket. Before that, I wasn't a kind of person who could stay all day in front of the TV watching it. I remember Star Sports bringin the game live and it was probably its first year or maybe I am wrong, the cable TV started in Nepal. It was actually my Grandfather who could listen to the audio commentary all day long, turning his favorite doordarshan akashbani or whatever its called. He just kept turning the and turning until it tuned a little worth listening and then listened all day. I was like, "what the hell is he doing?" "Man!! you gotta be sick of that". They he couldn't do it any longer, so he went upstairs and turned the antenna again and again so he could find Doordarshan providing match live on TV. He shouted from the balcony when the antenna was hanging, "aayo", "aayena", "aayo", "aakochaina", "aayo aba", "ali ali", "la thik cha". He came downstairs all happy and merry. You could hardly see the faces of who was batting. On the side of his one ear was holding his favorite old style radio, and then he was watching whatever he got from the channel on TV. It was getting too much for me, so I thought "this is it, I am outta here". But you just couldn't go out again and again as in Village you have hardly any friends during the day time. All there was, were the two or three shopkeepers, all my friends would go for their daily duties, so one could say that I was completely forced to sit with him and watch whatever was there. I started watching it and seeing the enthusiam he was getting out of such bad channels and bad tunings on radios, I had a thing of exploring what the hell is there that made this game so interesting to him and to many others in around the sub-continent. There was this Hero cup series back in 93-94 included India, West Indies, SouthAfrica and not sure who the other teams were. India and West Indies had reached the final. So my Grandfather, prepared for a great day of Cricket. From the morning, I was like, "Oh no! today is cricket match, thinking to mayself, my day is gone to hell today". He ate his lunch and sat down the similar position with his favorite chair and the match started. It was Tendulkar who was opening, I think for the first time for India a young lad, powerful in batting technique and he was facing the mighty West Indies fast bowlers including Ambrose and Walsh. They were regarded dangerous. So all excited, India batted first. Every 4 and 6's Tendulkar and Prabhakar scored, my "Grand father got out of this chair and started shouting, good shot!! Thats the way to go, Tendulkar plays good, Manoj what the hell is that". He was going all out, and I kinda started smiling. Tendulkar pulled Ambrose for a big one through mid-wicket, I smiled. He smashed Walsh through the covers beautifully, I started getting into it. My grandfather laughed loudly when another straight drive was played with authority from Tendulkar. Slowly but surely, the game started getting into me. At the end of the Tendulkars, I was sad to see him go by the way, he had scored a splendid century and Kumble I think took 6 wickets in the match to guide India to victory. So overall was a good performance. And at the end, I had a good day. Talked about how Tendulkar scored his century against west Indies and how they had won the Hero Cup to my friends during our daily ritual, sitting under a party at the village and chatting as the dusk creeped in. All of a sudden, I liked the sport and started following it. I don't watch it all day, but just viewing the scores in my desktop soothes me. I don't spend as much time I used to watching cricket all day, but hey just following the sport was nothing bad. It is a entertaining game as every ball is a mystery. There are some good batman like Tendulkar, Lara, Waughs(well retired now), Inzamam, Sanath Jayasurirya, who in my mind started the trend of whacking bowlers in the first 15 overs when the field restrictions are in place and then going all out in the final 10 overs, Pakistan started it with some amazing hitting. Test matches, which was long and boring, now seldom end in a draw with the emerge of Australia as the top test playing nation. Steve Waugh declaring the innings was phenomenal. I think a batsman's true ability is displayed in the Test arena much less so as the one-dayers where Afridi kind of batting entertains the viewers of the game. So, I think overall if you look at it, its not a bad sport, maynot be as popular as soccer but hey billions of fans don't go crazy all at once. |
