I came across a Nepalese Embassy site in Cairo... I felt real bad seeing that the prestigious government site is thru FREE DOMAIN like geocities! Is Nepal that poor or the people down there cant even afford to buy a domain worth… 10-20 USD per year, with maintenance cost may be around 50$. Just a thought!

Are you sure it is genuine?

One funny thing: they have screwed up the the aspect ratios of the photos on the home page, both of Mubarak and of the guy wearing the dhaka topi.

I believe thay can afford the money, it's simply they don't want to. The question here is where is the money going? I'm pretty sure that the embassy is given certain budget and it's appropriate to spend some to maintain a good site, at least. Is the embassedor or the counselor not aware that information is a must to establish our identity abroad? Is he/she that dumb? The embassy here in the US is not in good condition either (the physical building). It's everywhere. Nepal and Nepali have real issues. I don't see any changes soon.

May be on paper they are paying for the site and paying a lot of money, and they are putting money in their pocket. What's new?? that's how it goes in Nepal....Who is going to investigate???

If this is the real site for the embassy, I am speechless.

Arnico,
Could you recognize "the guy wearing the dhaka topi"? Looks familiar, doesn't he? :)

Oh, calm down, friends.

A few weeks ago, I read a comment from ambassador(ex?) to Egypt and countries of vicinity Gopi Dawadi that there is only one officer in Nepalese embassy in Egypt now. We don't need to be surprised, because there is an unprecedented vacuum in Nepali state these days. We don't have officers in districts, we don't have officers outside, we were even on the verge of not having supreme court justices until a few weeks ago: so things should be seen in the perspective of what kind of sclerosis of beaurocracy reckless directed regime of 'the guy with that dhaka topi' has brought in our country.

Ex-ambassador Kumar Gyawali once wrote his memoir/fiction about embassies and their functionings around the world. I had an opportunity to read its excerpts. I think the book must be out by now in KTM.He described frayed curtains in windows, dirty carpets, old clerical equipments, visa systems so dilapidated that officials in Shital Niwad don't really know how many visa were issued(this on the other hand enables venal officers in embassies to underreport the actual numbers) , embassy officials often tread as a servant by visiting Nepali leaders etc. Wherever we go, our embassies will remind us that we are one of the poorest and least educated countries in the world.

Regarding staffs in embassy: it is wellknown that quality of our civil service is going downhill. Himal once reported how we are poised to be governed by SLC second-divisioners , third-divisioners soon. A friend of mine once recounted how his uncle cried while reading essays of prospective section officers in Lok Sewa Aayog exam. Similary, in the past, our best and brightest talents used to contest for Lok Sewa and Foreign ministry jobs were considered very attractive. No more the case. Our best and brightest now try to be Doctor/Engineers. We have severe problem in manpower in Shital Niwas. Lack of reading habit is so legendary that when we meet officials from Bhutan or India and sit down to talk, our officers are not even aware of details of past meeting minutes/treaties.

In this context, if a fella is helping us to save a few dollars by using geocities website, let's not be unhappy. Let's hope he is doing that in the best interest of us all:-) Also, I remember the website of council of Equador or Peru or Venuzuala in Houston to be also hosted by something similar to geocities.

Nepal remains Nepal whether it is run by an army of 50 corrupt ministers or by a gang of corrupt and non-representative 5 ministers. So, nothing new here. Don't bet anything better under the brutal Maoists.

So, indeed calm down. Nepal embassy in DC with the ambassador like Mr. Upadhyaya (right after prajatantra) did manage to survive with his work habit of 1 hour every day; and it did do fine without any ambassador for the last two years. (God bless their souls.)

Look at the leaders there: the country is burning, the kids are rounded and indoctrinated in droves, people are leaving ang getting displaced. And our beloved leaders are arguing about the unification between NC-D and NC...what a shame. I do not find the King to be blameless, but I expect more from the so- called political leaders of the nation.

No dear!!! They have lots of money!!! Money for Corruption, not for good thing, and as others say, may be the site and domain is available on the paper, and they putting in their own pocket!!! How I can believe that, with my own hand I bought computer for Nepal embassy (some outside country, I don't wanna mention) on government budget.
