PhoolMaya!
Sunthali!
DilMaya!
Lajwanti (my favorite one)
Haha!!!!! We are searching for names to call Ashely, my roomie. We (Bikash my cousin and me) had decided to give Ashley a Nepali name, but we could not come up with a suitable one. Of course the idea was hers. She said she wanted to be a Nepali so we decided to start with names first. But so far, we did not find anything suitable. Hmmmmmm, kya rakne!. In other ways, Ashley was very much Nepali. She eats “Bhat” but without putting anything in it, which I will be never able to do. Eating plain rice, unheard of, but here she is and she eats it every time we cook rice. I mostly cook and that is once a week. How Ashley and me came to be roomies is interesting. In our weekly residential meeting, I was complaining to my RA how I did not feel comfortable when my roomie was around. It was a creepy feeling and I found them unsettling. Ashley also had problems with her roomie and so we switched rooms, and that’s how we landed up together. I am so glad I exchanged room right then for later I found out that my former roomie was a lesbian. Which was scary! I am all for the lesbian rights, but to actually share a room with one is not my cup of tea. When I turned 21, I and Ashley moved off-campus and Bikash, came to live with us by default. He had told the whole college or anyone who agreed to listen that he was sick of small town and wanted to live in the big cities, but don’t know what happened for at the last moment he did not transfer. So for lack of room to live in, he moved in with us. “Hyaa Bikash thau chaina, hami sanga basna mildaina”. Our apartment has only two bedrooms. He had replied, “Ma living room ma sutchu, ani arko semester ta gai halchu ni.” Those were very well said, but now after a year, he is still with us. I don’t know what happened when, but I, the owner of the apartment, ended up sleeping in the living room and he got my master bedroom, which is no fun :( :(

After sharing an apartment with Ashley, I realized people from any culture, caste or nationality can be friends. She will be playing her hip hop songs, from my room will be booming Nepali music and of course Bikash has his heavy metal. I can almost sing, “We are going to Witchia…..” We always have some kind of music playing in the apartment and one or the other dancing. Very much a musical environment When any visitors come, we ask them to join in the dance. Of course if you can’t study with the music on, then that’s your problem for even during finals someone or the other will be playing their music. Ashley, even knows how to say, “Parelema” (the only Nepali word). I play “parelema lukia rakha..” sooooooooo many times that she’s learnt to say it.

The only thing that Ashley complains about is the phone call that comes early Saturday morning. I can never figure out why our families call ONLY on Saturdays mornings. Must be a deliberate ploy of their part. We go out on Friday nights and just when you feel you can are asleep, ttttrrrriiiinnnnnggg booms the phones. Sleeping in the living room, I pick it up. You can hear Bikash saying, “Mero phone bhaye chai, chaina bhande hai.” “Nani, boleko ho?” goes Bikash’s daddy. “Hajur fupaju” say I. “Ani Khana khayo ta?” I should have known it was coming. It always this pattern. The next question will always be, “Padhai kasto cha?” Even granpa who lives two hours drive away will also ask the same question. Is it that all Nepalis ask the same set of questions or only our family? Granpa has also understood what GPA is so he will be like, “Ani GPA kati ho?” Anything below 3.75 is bad for him and I never seem to get anything above that.

Bikash also has changed a lot since he came here. Back in Nepal, I remember him rounding him friend and planning gang fights. So I ask him “why?” “Sale le malai ‘looks’ diyo tyo pani Arpana bhayeko belama!” So what is the big deal if you get “looks” I ask him. “Na kara ta bujadainas yesto kura.” He is right, I will NEVER understand “testo kura”. When you go to the discos, people get drunk and look at each other, not always politely. So what’s the big deal??? I think it’s to show Arpana that he has to go and fight. Arpana, another loser! I found her real boring. She was pretty, yes that I admit but I also admit that she IS dumb. All she talked about was make-up, clothes, fashion, shoes, and the worst of all hindi movies and heroes and heroines. No matter how much ever I tried to run away from her she would try to be close but that was before Bikash agreed to go around with her. Once they started going around suddenly I existed no more :( :( Frankly I am glad they broke up. Must be another “looks kanda” but I better not say that, for if he reads this piece, I will be in trouble. Better start avoiding him for a week :) :) :)

So yes, last Saturday, after the usual talks, fufu was like, “Nani, timro ta boyfriend chaina ni hoina.” “Chaina!” “Ani Bikash ko ni?” “Chaina!” “Testo boyfriend haru banaunu hudaina. Bikash lai bhana tyaha kuhirini sanga lagne haine. I tease her further, “Kina kuhire bhayera kya huncha ra ?” “Aba kuhire haru le chodcha, hudaina.” Then I start giving example of Sangeeta didi who is happily married to a “kuhire” and he’s an awesome person. “Aba Rance ta kuhire jasto chaina.” Hmm so the conclusion is that any foreigners who are nice are not khuries. So I relate the phone conversation to Bikash, he laughs out loud. “Ama le pani bihana bihana phone garera jhoor garnu huncha”, he grumbles. I think it’s to make up for the guiltiness that he feels for not talking to his parents when they call here.

So coming back to Ashley, she wants to date a Nepali re! I told her that Bikash would be perfect choice if he was 3 inches taller to match her 5”10. Bikash was like, “Na kara fucchie!” Ashley laughed and said she would not mind dating someone shorter. So one afternoon, I come home which I don’t usually do. And there in the kitchen I see the two of them kissing. “At least dhoka ta laye hunthiyo!” is all I say. I should have known this was coming but it was surprising, nevertheless. For the first time in my life, I see dai blushing :) :) :) :)

Hey Confused, Gerox, Casey, DWI, Angel and MNGuy thanks for the comments.

Some of you even know Ashley personally and yes, she is hot!!!!!!

Yesterday I heard so many stories about roomies. I am sure many of us has had some experience with them. Why don't you all also share your stories. It would be fun to read everyone's stories.

JPT sis your story sounded real fun, why don't u write it here, everyone can read it.

Dyamn, hernus na, me and my big mouth. I told Stevie that "Black girls are possessive" and he got so mad. hehe!!!! Mari halyo ni. Then I said sorry and he forgave me. Aba ta I am going to take classes in thinking before opening my mouth. I am not really a racist for I am a member of the ethnic-diversity and multi-cultural club and very active there. Tara I guess slip of tongue.

Just between u and me, tyo Arpana is really dumb. That's not her real name, in fact in the above story no one's name is real, so I am not putting anyone in trouble. Most of the story above is fiction.

Khoi aru haru ko pani sunum ra roomie issues.

Me is waiting.
