I am reading one book about ethics. This book is specially about ethics in corporate world and accounting practice. This book itself has many theories about ethics. Some of them are egoism, Utilitariniasm,Deontology and ethics of Virtue. These ethical theories are applicable beyond the corporate world and accounting practice.I want to put brief description on each of these ethical theories.

Egoism: This theory believes in self-concern and self development.According to the book, "One should always act in one's interest".

Utilitarianism: One should always act in a way that brings most good to most of the people. This theory does not mind if many people will be better off at the expense of few.One should act for all concerned, including self.

Deontology: This theory contradicts with Utilitarinism. This theory says everyone should be treated equally, and one should act in a way that he may will it to become a Universal law.So, one should always do a right thing no matter what, and he/she should never do anything wrong even though it benefits many at the expenses of few.

Virtue: This theory focuses on what one should become rather than what one should do.It insists that a person should develop a character and act accord in with virtue.

Those are few excerpts from the book.

From these theories, one can easily guess that ethical theories vary accoring to personal or social belief. How can one be held liable for being unethical if ethics is easy to define in various ways?It is well known fact that it is described in accord with social or cultural setting. In some culture, it is even ethical to marry own sister-in-law.In traditonal japanese culture, it was considered to be ethical if a samurai, a so called sword fighter, could test the power of his sword on any stranger he would meet on his way.

Looking at the given theories, one can find himslef/herself being under one of these theories.I just wanted to put a question which one better suits you, or which one you believe is the most important. If you know any more theories on ethics, it will be very nice if you share with us.If you have your own theory, this is your opportunity to discuss and share with our Sajhaites.

For me, the second(Utilitarianism) is more practical than others.I dont mean the first one does not exist.Everybody's first thought will be egoism. In this individualistic world, people tend to pursue their own concern, but that is not true in the most cases.

I read it and found interesting...

Globalisation:

An English Princess,
with an Egyptian boyfriend,
uses a Swedish mobile telephone,
crashes in a French tunnel
in a German car,
with a Dutch engine,
driven by a Belgian driver,
who was high on Scotch,
followed closely by Italian Paparazzi,
on Japanese motorcycles,
treated by an American doctor,
assisted by Filipino para-medical staff,
using Brazilian medicines, dies!
This is what is called GLOBALIZATION.

Ashley,
What a great way of portraying oneself...Instead of describing yourself as an egoist, you have showed how much u believe in egoism by putting your joke on princess Diana at the expense of my thoughtfulness.Correct me if I am wrong. You rock gal.

P.S. May be I am also bending towards egoism by just looking at my self interest, but I prefer the second one.Self Concern is acceptable as long as it does not harm others.

How can you let slip that Ashley an egoist from her posting? Are you psychiatric consultant by any mode? No offense. Now you might put in the picture that I have virtue quandary. Ashley Good pick.
