I need some help please. Please only honest ones. I am really good on maths. So I decided to do engineering. But I cant decide whether I want to do electrical or civil (building houses etc)engineering. I know electrical enginnering has more scope than houses and it pays more too. Also, if I do civil engineering, I would have to learn making houses out of paper or wood mostly unlike brick and cement on nepal. So incase i have to go back to nepal, my knowledge of building wont be used as much. But I think i would not do a good job on electrical either because I went to IT class. There I had to deal with computer hardwares and I wasnt very good on that. So I fear the same on electrical engineering. Is computer hardwares and electrical enginneering kind of same thing or different? Please gimme some honest suggestions.

Cool
If there is a major that you feel really comfortable with, then you should choose that. If you excel on a subject, then no matter how low the scope is, you are going to make it big on it.

Coming to the real question. Civil and Electrical Engineering, like any other subject, is a vast field. Civil is not limited to architectural aspect; you might find equal interest on Seismic evaluations, Stress analysis (mecha) etc. Likewise, it doesn't mean that you are going to hate Electrical Engr. just because u didn't like wiring the computer hardwares. Matter of fact, that is more ElectRNONIC Engr than Electrical. With either of these majors, you can focus on different fields as Aeronautics (more Mecha & Electrical), Power Systems (a stable field), Controls, advanced Technological etc.

You might want to consult with your professors as well and also ask professionals in that field and know if that is something you will be comfortable doing.

.DWI has good points.
Cook Keta,
Electrical engg., it covers all : electronics (power electronics is gaining scope these days), power system (many sub branches are here), semi-conductor drives etc. and to carry out their research one may use different modules, programming (which computer programmer does). It does not mean that if u r an elec. er., u need to focus on wiring stuffs. Those things are done by technicians. U will be sunk if u dive in Electrical Engg.

Similarly, Civil Engg., as DWI said, is not only limited to building houses stuffs. Structural engg., one of the most difficult and scoped fields of civil engg.; highway and bridge engg., railway engg. etc. there are the other fields which come under Civil ENgg. Since, you r an educated fellow, it's uncomfortable to hear that " But I cant decide whether I want to do electrical or civil (building houses etc)engineering. I know electrical enginnering has more scope than houses and it pays more too.

If u go towards Mechanical Engg., it has its own role. Pls, remember all the engineering fields are related to each other. If you are about to build a Power Plant, let's say : hydro -electric power plant, u will need : geologist at first, surveyor, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and finally electrical engineers. And, to make the system reliable, to operate in more optimize way : diff. computer programmings are developed, hence computer engineers (electrical engineers having this knowledge perform this work these days) are required too.... may be more......This is just a small example.

Hence, pls ask your mind, what is your interest. Consult with ur prof./ advisor or your friends who are in various fields of engineering. Since u gotta good mathematics, u can choose any of the engg. fields. (Electical engg. involves lots of mathematics). Why don u google once n try to get some more basic fundamental regarding this.

GOod luck.

hey cool keta, join us... in civl engineering.. hehehe... it ain't all abt building houses as u think it is yah know... Neural has pointed out other scopes as well... there's other stuffs like waste and watermanagement, hydraulic stuffs, structures, mechanics, we even learn abt bacteria in water and waste.. weird huh... there;'s various stuffs u can learn in civil engg dude...

Hmmm... i dun think houses in Nepal are built out of paper or wood.. except for the slums... and anyway, who said u can''t build houses outta paper and wood.. juz ask the Japs.. hehehehe..

and contrary to what u might think, there are demands for civil engineers...cos not many pple are taking it up these days.. and if yah are living in a developing country or state, there will always be a demand for civil engineers..makes sense right?? and where there;s building works; there;s bound to be demolition works as well.. and guess who does that as well... u guessed it.. us civil engineers..

and if yah really love maths... u will be blown away by the vast amounts of calculations yah have to do for structures in buildings, fluids and soils... think u might juz like it pal.. anywayz,i think i;m promoting too much civl engineering here right..?? but i juz wan yah to know that it's not only abt building houses... there;'s more to it than that.. but, the decision is all urs man.. and i'm not gonna commen on electrical engg stuffs cos i dun really know much abt em.. Cheers!!

I thought of becoming a doktor...but ended up being Conduktor....heheheheheh
south Posted on 20-Mar-04 10:55 AM

cool keta, civil engineering is not only about how to construct houses. civil engineering has vas field. constucton of house is under structural engineering, which is one branch of civil engineering. there are many branches like water resources, hydrology, environmental, traffic, highways, planning, geo technical, material etc. if you look at the employment section of this link, you can clearly see civil engineers have very good scope. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos027.htm#outlook

i do nt know much about electrical engineering, but i am sure they too have many parts like civil do. what i would suggest you is, take some courses which are similar for both engieering and then you cna decide. i did my undergrad in nepal, and in first two ys of class there were many similar courses in all engineering depts. like maths, statics, dynamics, electical circuits, engg drawings, physics, chemistry fluid and all. so after taking such courses you might have much idea which field you want to choose. good luck.

Cool keta,
when u r enrolled as an engg. student, usually in the first year, u ve to study all the engg. subjects:
Mechanical engg. (engg. drawing, mechanical engg. science, Civil engg. (strenght of material, engg. mechanics), Electrical engg. (all the basic funda including elex.), computer engg. (programming and all), physics, chemistry, engg. mathematics etc. The purpose of all these for the students is to let them understand all the engg. stuffs in the very first year. Still one can go for changing his field of study from second year. I donno what's the system in US, this is wat i mentioned acc. to education system in India in mid 90's.

Since, u have put ur queries here, all expect the feed back from you too. South and Edhunter have clarified in better way.
