Deadly battle rages in west Nepal Nepalese soldiers The army said it laid an ambush for the rebels The army in Nepal says its troops have killed scores of Maoist rebels during clashes in the west of the country. The day-long battle took place in the town of Beni, 300km (190 miles) from the capital Kathmandu, officials said. Casualty estimates vary, with a BBC reporter in Nepal saying dozens were killed on both sides, while an army spokesman said 500 rebels had died. Observers say similar government claims of heavy rebel losses have rarely been independently confirmed in the past. Lying in wait The authorities in Kathmandu told the BBC's Navin Singh Khadka that 18 soldiers and policemen had been killed and another 60 wounded, half of them seriously. More than 90 others, including security personnel and local administrators had gone missing and dozens of rebels had been killed, they said. The army put the number of dead much higher. "On the basis of what our people and witnesses saw, we believe over 500 Maoists were killed and 200 others injured," army spokesman Col Deepak Gurung said. He said the army had been tipped off that the Maoists were planning to attack Beni, in the Myagdi district. As a result, they set an ambush and were waiting when between 1,500 and 2,000 rebels attacked. The ensuing battle lasted all day, with the troops receiving reinforcements by helicopter, Col Gurung said. The Maoist rebels have been fighting to replace the monarchy with a communist republic. About 9,000 people have died in related violence in the past eight years. |

it is simply sad wats happening in nepal. the same country where peace prevailed for centuries is in midst of a war which might never end...the worst part is, all these maoist cadres don't even know the consequences of wat they are doing. they are being led by a guy who has promised them food (bhaat and maasu, which is a feast to all of them). all they know is if Prachanda wins the war, they will be fed well, or so they believe.. if this continues, Nepal will be no different than wat Afghanistan is now. I can only stay here in America and rant about wat should be done in Nepal, or wat can be done,,and wat i want in Nepal. but i know i wouldn't be able to do anything. Are you just another me? or are you different? Can you do anything like literally anything rather than just posting a comment in Sajha? iF SO, dont waste time; do something, if you are capable of doing it. Condolences to the families of the dead Maoists, Army officials and the Policemen... |

My worst nightmare could not be worser than this.... I opened two sites today but there was a lot of difference in between them on one site two big rivals kept on amusing with tons n tons on runs n in the other site my borthers r fighting like scoring and putting the number of deads in the scoreboard. how much did the rivals scored together??nearly 500 ...n to my dismay this is going to be the deadly figure of our brothers. I can do nothing except watching my brothers getting killed..hey Jindagi Nepal kina yesto huna pugyo..ma ta RAJA, MAOBADI, PARTY, NETAS, sabailai tyo AK 47 le bhutdiu ki jasto laagcha....akhiri jasari pani marne marne nai ho bhane lau na ta herum kosko tagat badhi hudo raicha. |

Another round of unfortunate killing spree! By the way, I found the script of RNA press briefing interesting. A part of it from Kantipur online (http://www.kantipuronline.com/kolnews.php?&nid=9309) reads as: ……Colonel Gurng said, “the district headquarter was not in Maoist control anytime during the fighting. The Maoists were not able to break into the army barracks.”…. Here the question is what comes under the phrase “the district headquarter” in RNA’s definition? Col Gurung’s statement apparently suggests that the district headquarter means only army barracks. Else, how could RNA claim that the district headquarter was not in Maoist control anytime during the fighting given the fact that key offices of district administration- CDO office, Police post, DDC office, District court, Banks plus others- were bombed or set on fire; CDO and DSP are in Maoist control; and Maoists were roaming around the streets till 10 in the morning. If the number is correct thats good to get killed when you go to kill .... An armed group was killed by another. whats wrong with this? Its wrong when unarmed group or person is killed by armed group. These two armed groups indulge mostly with unarmed poor peoples and kill indiscriminately. One thing is sure that both of them will claim that they did not have much loss on their side. Well, I appreciate RNA for its correct declaration of numbers. But, Maoshits have three sections in their usual large scale attacks. One hardcore armed maoshits. Second group, maoist supporters without arms in hand, third forced peoples to company maoshits and are the one sent first to ge killed by RNA until RNA's bullet is over. So, when RNA counts 500 dead (including hearsy) it adds all these three groups as maoshits, while Prachanda's claim of only 40 Maoshits' death counts the hard core armed Maoshits grouped in Group 1. Prachanda will tell that the number from group 3 are in fact RNA's peoples and adds up in RNA's number to raise the death toll on RNA side around 200. Here, RNA told that they counted 200 Maoshits as dead and another 300 taken by Maoshits. Total counted death is about 250. RNA personnel dead counted by RNA is about 30-40, while Prachanda's death count on his cadre is also about 30-40. What a matching number. The extra 250-40*2 = 170 should be balanced from somewhere? So, this number must be the number that comes from the group 3 that are the peoples who were forced to join Maoists not by choice but by force were neither RNA nor Maoshits. They were brought to war zone by Maoists to show the number and to drain the RNA's bullet. Disagreements are welcome. |

As always, I have to make my position clear that the Maoist problem will be over only at the beginning of next decade i.e. 2010 or like that. Its not my choice, its what happens when thugs wear a political hat and roam the town and villages and illude people as if messiah ( chk spl). In 1997, they were messiah in Rolpa, and peoples in other areas where told that they are messiah wanted to be ruled by these thugs, now when they ran into these new towns, the peoples who were frustrated from NC and UML thought that they will be rescued by these armed thugs. Once you have armed thugs around you in nice green hat, you can not get rid of them, as rightly pointed out by Biswo in another thread that armed groups like Cheney and rumsfeld always looking for some enemy (find an enemy: as they nearly started striking Syria after Iraq), will always try to find unarmed guys who make minor mistake will be sacrificed to control the mob (remember the time quote of one guy in china sentenced to death just for stealing a public road side lamp bulb, he was shot to death in public execution in an stadium with 40000 peoples, why to give lesson to others that don't oppose us or our rule). ............ So Maoists in town and villages will not go away in one or two years. Its their peak period. The peak may be flat lik Tibetan pleatau i.e. longer or small like Mt. Everest: once you are there you have step down. I belive the Maoists will not go away so easily, because the Nepalis in eastern side are still hungry for getting ruled by Maoists because they still have no real idea about Maoists and they think that Maoists are wrongly explained in newspapers. Its human nature, to get excited by illusions. The eastern side Nepalis are excited to welcome Maoists in their town and villages, and it will take another 2-3 years to get completely invaded and another 1 year to get frustrated , i.e. 2007. Well, then, frustration will begin against Maoists by 2007 and then, a new wave will come that will divide Maoists into two factions. One real maoists, the thugs, and another good peoples who were illusioned and sidelined with Masoits in the hope of making nepal better will realize that so called Maoism is a wrong path and they will start having worked with peoples and state army to through the thugs out of town. It may take another 2-3 years. When the thugs find themselves at the state extinct they will have settlement with state to save their face. thats on 2010 or 2011 a section of thug will not like settlement and will remain in jungles of rolpa and rest will return to normal private life. Country will start healing from the wound but it can never return to the peace we had before. Another group will rise .......... next problem will start ........ its the life. Its because there are simply too many peoples and too many people is not a problem, problem is too many UNEMPLOYED peoples and they are ready to die for a few rupees if someone promise them to transfer that few rupees to pay the price bread/bhat of their relatives. ..................... ............ |

I wish RNA would kill 5000 maoists in the combat field, instead of 500. Unfortunately, the number projected by RNA is completely WRONG because there is no follow up news once they declared 500 maoists are confirmed dead in Beni. In the past, we have seen several photos of dead bodies lined up on the ground after the battle. Where are the picture of 500 dead bodies that RNA confirmed dead? 500 is a huge a mass... The pictures (some wounded security personals and other destroyed buildings) I've seen on KOL website were probably taken a day after the battle. But where are the 500 bodies? Where did they they bury or cremate them? Now the follow up comes from Prachanda who claims only 40 of his men got killed in the battle, including the brigade vice commander. Why are we always deprived from the truth? Now, who should we trust? |

why trust the beeb or rna, for that matter? use common sense. unless an ambush is blown, which no report yet indicates, then those ambushed tend to incur heavier losses. dollars for donuts, the commies got creamed this round. |
