Dear all,

Some artist friends and I have started this group called "Yamini For Arts" in Kathmandu.
The idea is to raise funds for the arts (broadly defined) and help put on arts-related shows in KTM and beyond.

Our start is small, with plenty of room to grow bigger and better in coming months and years.

Come see this program.

Kathak Nritya:

The Kathak dance form originated in northern India as a temple ritual.
Later, Persian and Muslim influences altered the dance to a courtly
entertainment. The influence of Mughal tradition is evident in this dance
form and it has a distinct Hindu- Muslim texture. The costumes and themes
of these dances are often similar to those in Mughal miniature paintings.

The dances are performed straight- legged and the ankle bells worn by the
dancers adeptly controlled. Kathak is usually accompanied by Tabla and
Pakhwaj. Kathak has an exciting and entertaining quality. Its intricate
footwork and rapid pirouettes are the dominant and most endearing features
of this style.

Though not similar to the Natyasastra, the principles in Kathak are
essentially the same. Here, the accent is more on footwork as against the
empasis on hasta mudras or hand formations in Bharatnatyam.

Introduction of the Artist:

The performer, Subima Shrestha is a young promising artist of Kathak dance
from Patan. She has completed Bachelors in Kathak from Shri Ram Bharatiya
Kala Kendra (New Delhi) and Bhatkhade Sangeet Vidya Pith (Lucknow). She
received her initial training from Guru Honey Shrestha (Kathak dancer and a
teacher at Padma Kanya College).

The dancer is also a recipient of the prestigious scholarship from the Indian Embassy in 1998. For the past three years, she has been practicing this art from her respected Guru Shikha Khare (Senior student of the renowned Guru Birju Maharaj) in the
traditional Guru Sikshaya Parampara.

Till now she has performed during the 50th anniversary of the Parliament of
India, Holi and Basant Panchami Festival's organized by Shri Bharatiya Kala
Kendra (New Delhi) and dance competition organized by Heart and Care
Foundation (New Delhi). Besides these, she has also participated in various
cultural programs both in Nepal and India.

Programme:

Pure traditional Kathak Nritya begins with an invocation of Lord Shiva.
(He whose whole body is the universe, the sound of the universe is his
voice, the sun, moon and the star are his ornaments, and I worship you)

It continues with Thaat (a slow, graceful section) Tihai, Ladi (complicated
foot work), Paran, Tukda , Amad , Gat Nikas etc which are composed in Teen
Taal . The Nritya concludes with Chaturang.

Accompanists:

Tabla : Shri Hom Nath Upadhaya
Vocal and Harmonium: shri Chandi Prasad Kafle
Tanpura :Shri Shiva Pariyar
