Well, the zing of this web site has slackened this week. People really need rest, as it seems. If so, please ignore this posting. ------------------------------------- A friend of mine was invited to interview of police inspector a few days ago. You know, the charm of that job is no more the same. Gone are the days when there used to be a fixed rate for getting that job. Now , Nepal Prahari doesn't even get sufficient applicants to join the force. My friend was a lifelong Congressi. Few years ago, he proudly told me that he passed BSc in first division. And was fighting for both lieutient (general or colonel?) and Police Inspector. He told me he knew this Congressi leader, and that Congressi leader. We had another classmate whose uncles were in real high position of army. He had also applied to the same position in army. Needless to say, he got the job. In spite of being more thewy and smart, my this Congressi friend didn't get either of the jobs. The reality we all knew was that he didn't have real useful contact. Those were the days when Communists were being laid off from state owned enterprises. A lot of my acquaintee communists were either laid off, or sent to the Durgam Jilla. The applicants to the post of 'teacher' were also divided between Congressi and NonCongressi by Govinda Raj Joshi, and bribes were taken from those people for every jobs offerred.Unemployment rate sore so high that for 10+ posts of Kharidaar in NTC, there were thousands (65 thousands) applicants. I never saw any communist friend of mine who was hopeful of getting job those days. Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai was once kicked in his mouth by a UML supporter just because he tried to paint his slogans in a famous wall in Ratna Park. What I am trying to say is we didn't have a democracy then, all we had was autocracy mostly of NC and somewhat of UML also. Now, things are different. I don't have to repeat them here. The Maoists have roared their nonsenses from IndraChouk just yesterday. My friend gets the job of Police Inspector without any bribe and any relation. As if he has a lot of choices, he is still thinking about what to do about this job? Rather than using force on these people, we must conduct dialogue, slowdown the attack, practice eternal patience, live rather in 'Taiwan-China' situation than to have all-out war. After all, as BP Koirala once said in his famous speech, "Desh Bhannus, Ya Rashtra Bhannus, Tyo Janatanai ho..." (Whether you say a country, or a nation, it is all the people living there...)
