India News > Top Nepalese Maoist arrested in West Bengal Kolkata, Mar 30 (IANS) : A top leader of one of Nepal's outlawed Maoist groups has been arrested in West Bengal, where he had been convalescing following an eye surgery, police said Tuesday. Police intercepted Mohan Vaidya in Siliguri town, about 700 km north of here, Monday evening, Darjeeling district police chief Rajiv Mishra told reporters. Vaidya, said to be the chief of the "eastern command" of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), had come to Siliguri for an operation on his right eye. "His right eye was bandaged when we arrested him," Mishra said. Vaidya gave up without any resistance. Police also arrested Vaidya's accomplice Narayan Vikram Pradhan on charges of sheltering the Maoist leader. "We are interrogating him to find out if there was any other reason for his visit to Siliguri," Mishra said. Vaidya is a member of the CPN's powerful permanent committee. Maoist rebels are spearheading a bloody insurgency in Nepal to end the monarchy.

Mr Baidhya was , if I understand correctly, secretary general of Ne Ka Paa (Mashaal) before Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Under Pushpa Kamal Dahal's leadership, Mashaal became Ekataa Kendra and then again Maoist. This arrest must be a big setback for the Maoists. Let's see how things unfold.
