Kathmandu:

The myth of the abominable snowman or Yeti has been shattered with the capture of the elusive creature on the south-eastern slope of Mt Dhaulagiri, in Nepal today by a joint expedition team that spent months tracking the creature on the snowy slopes of the Himalayas.

The Japan, United States and Nepal joint expedition managed to tranquillise the creature with a dart gun. Thereafter, they took blood and hair samples for DNA testing. They also managed to implant a microchip in the creature's shoulder before releasing it back in the white wilderness.

“The Yeti is a reality and for the first time ever we now have DNA, blood and hair samples that have been flown out to the United States and Japan for testing,” informed Hidetoshi Takahashi, team leader of the seven-member expedition. Takahashi had been on two earlier unsuccessful expeditions to track the Yeti in Nepal. A set of footprints in 1971 set him on his first 'yeti expedition' in 1974, and in 2003 he returned to lead another expedition sponsored by Suntory, Japanese distributor for Pepsi.

After spending two months in the mountains tracking this legendary elusive creature with state of the art technology including infrared cameras and motion detecting devices the team met with success on Wednesday, March 31.

Takahashi says it was not possible to keep the creature in captivity because of a lack of resources and confusion about the legal status of capturing such a creature. However he stated that a microchip had been implanted in the Yeti through which it would be possible to track the creature easily as well as prepare the ground for uninterrupted study of other Yetis it was in contact with and its natural behaviour.

Team members told The Himalayan Times that it was a creature almost six feet tall, certainly unlike a bear or a monkey. It's body was muscular and covered with coarse black hair, it had almost human fingers and when it recovered escaped by running erect on its two feet at a great speed.

Their account fits in with 90-year-old Lakshmi Thapa's recollection of a Yeti sighting at the age of 15 in the Melamchi area. “We were returning home when I set eyes on this black hairy creature with thick lips, a big forehead and deep set eyes. For a moment we were both startled at seeing each other and then I screamed and ran while it gave pursuit. It was very scary. I reached home and looked back to see if it had given up the chase,” she recounts. “I am sure that it was a Yeti as many people in our village including my brother had seen this strange creature.”The capture has sparked a flurry of activity with a number of experts now in consultation over the next step to be once the test reports are in. Interestingly the Government has refused to comment until the test results are declared.

However, Ashok Pokharel, general secretary of Nepal Association of Tour Operator's and proprietor of Himalayan Journey's who were involved with the ground handling of the expedition says, “This is the biggest thing to happen since the ascent of Everest in terms of promoting Nepal as a destination. I believe that if the reports confirm it is Yeti, tourism will witness the biggest boom ever.”
