So, like I was telling you, this actually is a disease. In layman's terms its called "Attention Seeking Disoder" and according to DSM -IV-TR,it falls under 301.50 Histrionic Personality Disorder. APA has prescried the following diagnostic criteria for the disease: A pervasive pattern of excessive emotionally and attention seeking, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following: 1. is uncomfortable in situation in which he or she is not the center of attention 2. interaction with others in often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or prococative behavior 3. displays rapidly shifting and shallow expression of emotions 4. consistently uses physical appearance to draw attention to self 5. has a style of speech that is excessively impressionistic and lacking in detail 6. show self-dramatization, threatrically, and exaggerted expression of emotion 7. is suggestibe, i.e., easily influenced by others or circumstances 8. considers relationships to be more intimate than they actually are This should not be confused with Narcisstic personality type as narcisstics also crave attention from others, but they want praise for their "superiority" whereas HPD is willing to be viewed as fragile or dependent if this is instrumental in getting attention. NPD may exaggerate the intimacy of their relationships with other people, but they are more apt to emphasize the "VIP" status or wealth of their friends. (pg. 711-714, DSM-IV-TR, 4th edition). Do any of you know anybody suffering from either one of the two disease???????

MeERA! Thank you for reserching on Attention Seeking Disorder and posting your findings in here. I have to agree with DSM-IV-TR definition of the disease but I would also like to add that it is a social disease and not mental/physical. So, I think it has less harm (no harm at all) than any other mental or physical desease. What do you think about that? Is ASD harmful? does it need to be treated? It's true that ASD affect's a person's social interaction and his/her relation with people around him/her but I'm not sure about the impact of the disease on the person's mental stage (eg, emotional frustation, not being able to hold a relationship et all). There are lot of people I know, who might be suffering from borderline ASD. u_day

Sitara didi and hellbound, you two are funny, hehe!!!!! Spring i had suspected Sunthali of getting that disease, aba ta confirmed bhaye :p Most people if not all love attention, but only when its gets to the extreme its termed ASD. Its a social disease but like they say, "cheenee pani dherai khayo bhane tito huncha" so when you let it rule your life, it does become harmful. Its not easily treated as there is no specific medicine for it, but counselling helps. Most people suffering from ASD get depressed, also leads to suicide. I read somewhere that the cause is because of the lack of attention in childhood, have to check on that though.

Enna, it ain't contagious, hehe. Porcelina, below is what I remember about Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD or ADHD). One of my major is psychology, so though I am no expert on the subject, I would like to think that I know a bit. ASD is different from ADD as in: In ASD, one goes to the extreme to seek attention, one famous personality suffering from this disease is Late Kurt Cobain's ex-wife, Courtney Love. In ADD, one has a tough time paying attention or tending to the same task for a long time. Patient suffering from mild case of ADD make good ER doctors, firefighters, etc. If you have the time then read this beautiful story on ADHD, written by G_I. http://sajha.com/sajha/html/OpenThread.cfm?forum=2&ThreadID=13837 Free free to ask me questions on this topic.
