Finally, the time has come. The regular season is almost over. Lots of drama going on at this time of the season, esp. in the Western Conference. Four teams are up for the Western Conference Title. So, I think it's time to discuss some awards that are to be given after the season ends.
They are:
1. Regular season MVP
2. Rookie of the year
3. Coach of the year
4. Defensive Player of the year
5. Sixth Man of the year
6. Comeback Player of the year

My Choices are:-
1. KG(of course) - TWOLVES
2. Lebron James - CLE
3. Hubie Brown - MEM
4. Ben Wallace - DET
5. Antawn Jamison - DAL
6. Lamar Odum - MIA

What's your opinion??
Casey00 Posted on 09-Apr-04 01:23 PM

Hello guys:

1. Regular season MVP: K-Garnett..This season has been great for KG and co..but we have to wait and see if they will make it past.the..first round..:)

Notables: Duncan, KOBE

2. Rookie of the year: Carmelo or Lebron are the front runners but LEBRON will run away as the winner...If it was me I would give the award to the player whose team makes the playoffs.

Notables: Chris Bosh, Hinrich and Wade ( watch out for this fella..he might be the dark horse)

3. Coach of the year JERRY SLOAN all the WAY!!!..Hubie has done a great job..but look what SLoan had all year...He had bunch of average players in NBA and still they are fighting...IT HAS TO BE HIM.

Notables: Hubie Brown, Rick Carlisle

4. Defensive Player of the year: its not Big Ben this year for sure :( Due to Rasheed Wallace's presence ,the production of Ben has decreased...RON ARTEST will take the award this year.

Notables: Andrei Kirilenko( How can you forget someone who could do ANYTHING On the court????), Theo Ratliff for his crazy blocks...in portland.

5. Sixth Man of the year:Jamison is talented enough to start in most of the NBA teams..but again his role is Dallas could win him something...B.Miller will be his main competitor.

Notables:B-Miller, Earl Boykins

6. Comeback Player of the year: Lamar Odom-- the big gun has finally left his injuries behind and playing like the way he was supposed to play..

Notables:Alonoz Mourning..although he hardly played siginificant minutes during his short comeback..he came back from a life threatening kideney disease to compete.

BIGGEST BUST OF THE YEAR: Darko Millic..sorry the kid is young..he still has time..but again...being the second pick..the expectations were high..well teams with depth like Pistons could afford to have him...we will see what the man from Europe can do next year.

Notables: Van Exel--the playoff hero of Dallas last year has slown down in california...he is nowhere to be seen..well maybe too busy giving marriage certificates to gay couples. I still believe Van Exel would have been a great fit for Dallas.

Players to WATCH: Amare Stoudemire..the guy is averaging almost 20 pts.. he is ready to break into superstar status!!

Hmmm this is what I have got........

1. Regular season MVP: KG slightly over TD. This will be the pay-off season for KG, who got beaten by no other than TD for the same titlelast season. J- O'Neal will be the third most deserving athlete. No matter what the record of the PACERS is: the judges will pick amongst TD and KG simply because they are playing in the Western COnferences. Not to take away the credits they deserve though. THey have had the best seasons of their lives. Only, guys like MJ can win the MVP award from the Eastern Conference. Besides Ron Artest is doing a lot of good things this season..... which might take away some of the credits O'Neal will otherwise have had for his own purposes.

2. Rookie of the year: This is as competitive as the title for the MVP is. As I had always said Anthony will walk away with the prestige. His stats. are as good as that of Lebron James' yet there are other plenty of other criteria to look upon. A. Anthony plays for Denver Nuggets: the team in The Western Conference. B. Anthony gets slightly less support from his teammates than James gets. C. Probabaly the most important deciding factor might be the standing of their respecttive teams. Nuggets are still alive in the playoffs hunt in the Western COnference, with a well above .500 winning pct. While, the Cavaliers are out of the playoff contention with 3 games to play in the regular season wih a below .500 winning pct. Denver Nuggets might break the record for the best turnover season by any teams in NBA history.

3. Coach of the year: This is a no Brainer. HUbbie Brown is the clear favorite. The Grizzlies had turned into one of the best in the league from being amongst the worst in just a matter of one season. And look at the Grizzlies... they are just getting better and better. Rick CArlisle is the closest competitor.

4. Defensive Player of the year : Ron Artest is having an awesome season. Big Ben Wallace is doing what he has been doing the seasons before. Dalembert in Philaelphia has his own reasons to be comfortable about the title. (Just that Philly is not having a good season as a whole team). Theo Ratlif-man he sscares the hell out of the opponents. BRuce Bowen is the Dark horse in this race. Not the biggest offensive weapon yet he does his job defensively as good as anyone else in the league. However, Ben Wallace should win the award. Ron Artest is the second best, and the best in his position.

5. Sixth Man of the year: Brad Miller would have been the clear favorite had he not started a bulk of the Season. When Webber was out he was the man in charge. Earl Boykins have been doing all the good things at he pt. Guard position for the Nuggets yet not enough to win the Award. Jamison had made statements for his own purpose. Upto this point A. Jamison appears to be the favorite.

6. Comeback Player of the year: Who else other than ODOM? Just look at his stats. Top 5 in double doubles. Marcus Camby is another favorite. He wasn't all healthy in last 3-4 seasons. Now, he is doing all the good things for the Nuggets.

I will add one more title to the list:
7. Most Improved Player: Carlos Boozer is my favorite at the moment. He is having an amazing season-- he is just a sophomore. Without him Cleveland would not have been making all the big noise with LEbron James alone. Randolph is another favorite. He had improved his defense as well as offense.Ginobali is improved too. Eric Dampier had posted some serious numbers as well. However, Boozer will be challenged by Theo Ratlif the most. Look at Theo's defensive abilites. damn... how many shots does he block every single night??? maybe As many rebounds. if he had done the same things in Atlanta.....he would have make his statements for the most prestigious Award as well.

Nice analysis from Casey00 and ProudNepali....... what about other NBA fans???Would be nice to read your predictions with suppporting comments.
yOuNgBlOoDz Posted on 12-Apr-04 08:34 AM

Okie.. here is the question.. what if.. the denver dont' make the playoff.. n cavs are already eliminated.. so in this case... sumone said.. whoever's team clinched to playoff will be rookie.. but then what if both dont make..
melo still deserves it.. if we look at the team's winning percentage.. its all the way melo.. melo leads lebron in points n rebound.. i think..:=).... its melo
james would b like Yao of last year....... loved n admired by all but not honored by the trophy..

coach of the year........ HUBIE brown..... sumone said.. jerry salon had no superstar in his team.. well tell meh whose the superstar of memphis.. none of those players had made all star.. they have built one heck of a recognition for themself.. the team that was the worst of last year is now on 5th spot.. ahead of dallas..

defensive player of the year.......... bowen or artest...

Casey00 and Proud, great job on your analysis. here's my list:

1. Regular season MVP: TD
2. Rookie of the year: Carmelo Anthony (I like Wade from Miami)
3. Coach of the year: Sloan
4. Defensive Player of the year: Ron Artest (I like Bruce Bowen from Spurs)
5. Sixth Man of the year: Antawan Jamison (I like Gino from Spurs)
6. Comeback Player of the year: Odom

Jazz will be seeded #8 in the Western Conference. Sloan should win the manager of the year. That team more seems like a CBA team. The only player I can name from that team is Kirlenko(???). Hubie has done marvelous job in Memphis. His team is loaded with young talents. Memphis players are more familiar than the Jazz, we all know about flashy JWILL even before he landed to Memphis. In addition, they got young talented Spaniard Paul Gasol, Dukes' standout Shane Batier, once promising Stromile Swift and sharp shooter Mike Miller. so I say SLOAN should win the MANAGER OF THE YEAR award.
Casey00 Posted on 12-Apr-04 09:28 AM

ROOKIE of THE YEAR AWARD:

I say both deserve the award...and reasons why..

A) Melo and Lebron have identical stats...well this is NBA and yes stats have lot of meaning..having said that Lebron has slightly upper edge on assist category..he seems to be better all round player than MELO.

B) Melo has had to play Western Conf. much often so it was definitely much harder than playing in E.Conf...Having said that Lebron did all he could to almost take CAVS to the playoffs..it was just McInnis who was injured at the end and they just couldnt find the rhythm after that.

C) Melo went to Syracuse before jumping into the NBA..so he had better idea of the game..but Lebron came straight out of the HS and made a huge impact...and livedupto the rookie expectations..

I think JAZZ will win the last playoff spot and in that case...both rookies are deserving to get ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD..

COACH OF THE YEAR:

Yes, Hubie has done a great job in Memphis...but he also has lot of talent...Most of the impact players in Memphis are draft picks..Gasol, Bonzi, Battier etc.But look at SLOAN ..with so much less talent he has his team almost making the palyoff...regardless of the JAZZ make the playoff or not..I think SLOAN deserves to get an award...He should have gotten more of those already.but this time..it is definitely his..

Even Phil Jackson was quoted saying that he has been voting SLOAN for the COach of the YEar for last 6 years!!! now thats what you call respect..

Since Lakers lost to Queens..I mean Kings...waht do you all think abt the LAkers as champ for 2004? I still think they can win it..they just need to play better defense..

P.s If somehow Pistons and Spurs happen to play for the championship..I wont be watching NBA finals... Also I think Heat will go deep into the playoffs...

pucoug Posted on 12-Apr-04 02:24 PM

Here are my picks:

MVP - KG
ROOKIE - I want King James to win, but I think Carmelo will get it if they make the playoffs
COACH - SLOANE (no way that a first year coach should win it... Hubey has to prove himself)
DEFENSE - Ben Wallace OR Artest
SIXTH MAN - MANU
MOST IMPROVED - Lamar Odum
KoHoTyo? Posted on 13-Apr-04 08:36 AM

Now looks liks Carmelo will run away with Rookie of the Year award, since Lebron couldn't carry his team to playoff. They both had same 17-65 record last year. But as all of us know this year the story is different. Even though being in Western Conference, Denver managed to put up respectable record of 43-38, as of today. And without a doubt melo is one of the big reason Denver got there where they are now. So, My choice for Rookie of the Year is no mor Lebron, it's : Carmelo Anthony !!
Jonny_Blaze Posted on 13-Apr-04 10:55 AM

ZZZZZZZZ booooooring!! everyone sez the same thing so let me give a lil diff perspective.

MVP: Mah boy Jermaine of course...i wish, but unfortunately its the east. I give this award to the single most dominant player in the league, one who controls the game no matter what n can turn it around. No not Shaq, i dislike the guy but he is an awesome athlete to watch (check shaq with his no look passes). But this one goes to TD the King of Kisses. Bank, Bank, n Bank. I aint seen no big guy like this pf who can run the ball down the court in a fastbreak. Focused Defense, Offensive arsenal, this PF is unlike any other big man. Just great athleticism. Just lackin a bit of attitude, well i guess bein one of the best will humble you.

Rookie of the Year:Forget close calls, notables, forget Wade n Howard, all those rookies that average a high of 11 pts per game may be the future stars but are doing the mediocre things rookies do, and finely i might add. But i guess it comes down to the King n Carmelo, i don't care what anyone sez, no freakin rookie averages 22 pts per game. But i give this to Carmelo for leading his team into the playoffs, n after so long for Denver. But the King is just phenomenal considering his age and ability.

Coach of the yEar: What happened to Doc Rivers!!??n Siles n good ol Jackson?? Kiddin...this one goes to Hubie. Why? Cuz he turned an almost defunct team that was the laughing stock of the NBA into a team with determination, untapped talent, and the will to win. Only a leader could turn individuals out like that, n that leader is good ol Coach Hubie. Now we can all go back to laughing at that other team, you know the one with a big red eagle.

Defensive Player: Bruce Bowen. Wallace is good, even Ron. But Bowen is great. 7 yrs of gettin moved around, has not affected him, his style of defense is not one of Ben Wallace blocks or Ron Artest agility. It's just this annoying small forward just sticking to you like glue, feet planted on the ground, n any offensive move you make, you can bet Bowen will turn it to a turnover. Annoying Defense, mental defense (no trash talkin tho), best defense.

6th man of the yEar: Allen Iverson...hehe just kiddin...he's not even worth that these days. I still loves you AI. I give it to Ginobli. He's just fun to watch, n lets faace it 6th man awards are BS anyway.

comeback player. I give it to Yao...Improved vastly. He no longer plays Beijing ball. He's FINALLY using his body on the inside, aggressive as shit, but still hasn't lost the outside touch. A big man guarding him, it's ok he'll just go n shoot a jumper, a small guy on him....get outta the way short stuff slam jam!. The Great Wall of China has vastly improved, thanks to good ol Patrick??? Who knows, but it'll just be more fun watching this Asian dude bring down the house. N no one but TD and this second year rookie can stop Shaq, that's saying a lot.

Odom...pff whatever, he should have been shining when he had the chance, push aside ol man n take ur drugs off court. *still pissed he scored 28 pts againsat Boston.*

NBA CHamp Prediction: ok this is probably not original, but it's sports n upsets rarely happen in championships *damn Marlins*. So it's def a West team. i think it'll be down to the Wolves n Spurs, but don't count out the Lakres, though they in a slump, they are a championship team and work well under pressure. So i say this is the year for the all star Lakers.
