You know how sometimes you come across particular facts that you never knew about the person place or thing that you were familiar with until someone tells you or you discover through other mediums? Well, this is the thread to share such facts about well known figures, places or things. So go ahead.....

DID YOU KNOW?

1. It was the Romans who made the first popsicle. They took some ice and added flavour to it and then licked it. What a great idea! Yummy !

2. The major air-polluting industries are iron, steel and, cement.

3. That Angel Falls in Venezuela is the world's largest waterfalls? It drops 3212 feet!

4. That Queen Victoria's grand-daughter (from her daughter's side) Alexandra was the wife of the last Tsar Nicholas of Russia whose whole family perished in the deadly massacre.

5. That Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had stayed in England for 6 years before returning home.

6. That once upon a time, Norway was part of Sweden.

7. That the baby who gets baptized in the Godfather (part I) movie is the person who plays the daughter in Godfather part III who now is the famous Sophia Coppola.

8. That Dick Clark has been hosting the New Year's Eve program for more than thirty years!

9. That the author of The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald was from Minnesota and had roamed around the very hip uptown and Nicollet Ave areas where I get my morning coffee nowadays. This one gives me goose bumps everytime I think about it.

10. Border Collies are the type of dogs that were once used for herding sheep and cattle. Now it makes sense why they chase cars when they are out on the streets.

Did you know a lactating woman can produce two liters of milk a week? A woman in Norway produces about 11 liters a week. She sells surplus and is rumored to have made about 3-4 thousans pounds (Sterling) worth in a month.
thugged out Posted on 10-Apr-04 07:02 AM

Well then, if we could really take the bit between our teeth to find more women with as much caliber to produce milk as the Norwegian women, then it absolutely obviates domestication of the bovine populace, were it not for the purpose of consumption.
suva chintak Posted on 10-Apr-04 09:26 AM

ou812 jyu,

Just imagine what such generous capacity could do for our ever-in-the-red Nepal Dughdha Biksas Sansthan! All they would need to do is have scores of Pamela Anderson type employes, let them graze on the village green of Lainchaur, and just knead those glorious udders twice a day! Milk would flow cheaper than water in Kantipurinagari and finally the milkman would have no reason to add that sewer into our milk supply.

The only problem hindering the Sansthan from going ahead with this scheme has been finding enough gothalas for the new breed. Working the heavy udders and hefty teats is known to be the main factor behind Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the himalayas. Given this occupational hazard, not many Nepalese have opted to take up this challenging profession despite rampant unemployment in other sectors of the economy.

Nylon was simultaneously developed in New York and London, hence the name NyLon.

Bell and Grey applied the patent for telephone the same day. Bell was ahead by a few hours.

Newton and Leibnitz discovered Calculus simultaneously.

Kekule discovered the structure of benzene in his dream.

Coleridge wrote his poem Kubla Khan in dream.

Morgan Robertson, in his novel Futility, had predicted an event very, very similar to the sinking of Titanic.
SITARA Posted on 10-Apr-04 10:48 AM

Suva ji:

I don't believe it was carpal tunnel syndrome. I think it was the opportunity cost (as Ashu would put it!) and collateral damage, as a byproduct of kneading, that deters the smarter ones: The bigger the lactating mammary organs, the smaller the brains of the kneading mammal!!!
suva chintak Posted on 10-Apr-04 11:31 AM

Sitara jyu,

I stand corrected! I claim no expertise on this issue; any knowledge I might have on lactose economy is from a long-distance learning course; hardly any priactical lessons involved. So I ask all the erudite Sajahpurans to take my milk-bowl gazing with a pinch of salt.

Your Law on the inverse relationship between the volume of the mammalary glands and and the brain is quite remarkable. Imagine what this revolutionary finding is going to do the battered psyche of the plain-brested! It is going to restore their self-esteem, pride, and give them the knowledge that they have it where it matters. Who knows, Pam may even return her implants!!

In jest, as usual!

Did you know that Suvachintak is actually a woman! :)

Gokul ji, amazing facts there.

Did you know?
* that water keeps the protoplasm alive (my sixth grade biology teacher's popular mantra)

*that the plant with the largest leaves is a kind of palm tree called raffia which has leaves that are up to 65 feet (20 m) long which is about as long as two school busses parked end to end. Until now, I used to think it was the Banana tree.

*that bamboo is a type of "grass" that can grow as fast as 3 feet a day!

*that the most dangerous animal is.......yes the "mosquito" that has contributed to the deaths of more people than has any other animal. Now that's scary!

Did you know Nepal ahs a notorious Nepeswor deuta who only causes troubles to unruly politicians from home and visting foreign leaders?

Did you know that the world's smallest and lightest coins (fuka-daam) were minted in Nepal?

....

ou812 Posted on 10-Apr-04 01:10 PM

Am ammendment to my earlier posting.

" A woman in Norway produces about 11 liters a week. "
Should be " A particular woman in Norway produces about 11 liters a week."

SC Ji,
Milking is an art in itself. It takes an expert hand with right knowledge of kneading,
pulling in smooth and even motion. It is more to do with the finger pressure and angle
twist of teats. So far no case of carpel tunnel syndrom has been reported. Wondered
why keyboard and mousepad have that jelly feel?

Woman paid for a car with breast milk

Anette Lie has the Norwegian record for delivery of breast milk. She made so much on the breast milk that she purchased a car for the money. According to the Norwegian radio channel Kanal 24, Lie has produced 501.5 liters breast milk for sale last since May of last year.
"I’m making some money on this as they pay 135 krone per liter", Lie said to TV 2. "I’ve gotten my driver’s license and bought a car, everything paid by breast milk".

With the liter price of NOK 135 (USD 19.56), Lie got an income of more than NOK 65,000 (USD 9430) on her breast milk. She has an 11 month old son.

According to Lie, it is genetic explanations why she produced so much milk.

"My mother was the same way, and I’ve heard my grand mother nursed children around town, so it’s hereditary," Lie said. "It’s my hormones. I apparently have lots of them."

Kanal 24 reported that the hospital across the country need breast milk, but stressed that the deliveries do not have to as large as those from Lie.

The average donor provides one and half to two liters a week, while Lie has delivered as much as 11 liters.

OU812,
Yes, the simple joys of rural life, you could say that again. Gothala jaanda, khetala jaanda, the perfect Garden of Eden time for all mankind.

Way to go Anette Lie (or is it Lacteti?)!! No one has done more to demonstrate women's self-sufficiency and automony!

May the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh and SEWA in Ahemdabad will get new ideas for rural micro credit to raise women's income.

In zest (Lemony), of course!!

Mark my words, Anette Lie will inspire many across the globe to take the path of least resistance for a renewable source of income !

Did you know, according to "the bible code" in the year 2010, a giant earthquake wiill hit Los Angeles and it will wipe out thousands and thousands of people? Two years later, an asteroid will wipe out the human race( incase it doesn't get crumbled on the way to earth). And it has been scientifically proved refering to the codes.

Bible codes= strands of letters out of the bible that develop certain patterns and when you stack all of these letters out, they form "key words" such as "Two Planes" "Two Towers" "Terrorism" NOTE: These were actual phrases formed on the same page.
