Now that's the TWIST. ******************* here is the story! King Gyanendra wooing Maoists? A high-level leader of the underground Maoist party has claimed that King Gyanendra, through various channels, has been trying to convince the rebels to sit for peace talks [with the government]. "King wants a dialogue with us to resolve the current crisis," Maoists' central committee member Bamdev Chhetri claimed in the western hills of Gulmi on Wednesday, according to a Kantipur daily report Friday. "For this, both the sides are now undergoing discussions," Chhetri told journalists covering a Maoist program in Bastu VDC at five km distance from Gulmi district headquarters, Tamghas. "The King has begun pre-consultations [with the Maoists] through two of his brother-in-laws -- Padma Shumsher Rana and Satish Shumsher Rana," Chetri said, adding that his party and the King have no direct discussions, so far. He, at the same time, claimed that the sources of the King and the Maoists are now in regular contacts. "The King is for concentrating talks on regime, nation and reforms," he said. "But our party insists on holding dialogue only after the present politics [King-Party feud] finds an outlet." Chhetri said, if the King creates a conducive environment for talks, after giving an outlet to the present impasse, "we will not only hold dialogue with the King, but will be ready to sit for a round table discussion with the parties, as well." nepalnews.com mr Apr 23 04 -- http://www.nepalnews.com/ |
