please read the instructions .......... Do not upload images more than 700 pixels wide - this is so that the orientation of the page does not get messed up. please try to reduse the size of the photos. the simplest way is to open the picture in paint then go to image> stretch/screw and give the values less than 100 to reduce the size of the picture. save the picture as another file and to check if the photo has exceeded 700 pixels or not place the mouse over the file (in the folder where you saved) it will show you the dimentions. the administrator had deleted some of the great photos in last thread. i would hate to see same thing happening here. |

Dyam, I think you can take good pictures from any camera. I've used a Nikon camera with interchangeable lens for the last two years. Based on that experience, I think you get a little more flexibility with framing pictures and the quality is slightly better than regular point-and-shoot cameras. But of course, tools don't make the photographer! We ended the "Photo..." thread with pictures of our backyard. I'm going to continue that and post a few more. This one was actually my "porch". My dorm was to the left of the cherry blossom trees.

Fantastic picture everyone. Thank you all for posting some dull & many breath taking photos. But all in all they were very artsy fartsy. My original request to Bhanja was a visual diary of "Your Day". i.e view of Singapore from Bhanja's eye, what you see in a day. Road you take to work, famous land marks, local coffee house etc. Dull but challenging. I would love to see visual diary from Sydney to Seattle, what a street in Arizona looks like, Ranch in Texas, Mountains in Colorado (Aspen), Hells Kitchen, Madams Organ in Adams Morgan or Boston. (Apologies if my taste is to Hamrican) Any Takers? Please no copy and paste from internet sites. Thank you |

I was looking forward to 2days tour but I tell all the people who were with were all disappointed. The floating market that they brought had only I think about 5 boats.2 of the boat approah our boat to sell their ware but I did not buy anything. I guess since it was a complimentary tour,I should not have expected more. Anyway the "temple of dawn" was not bad.Took few pictures but did not bother to go in as I had already made my way there myself yesterday. After the complimentary tour, I made my way with a Singaporean couple and Spanish guy to Chantukchak week end market and had a free lunch complimentary of the Singaporean couple.Feeling full and hungry to explore the market we went our separate ways. I went about looking for interesting subject but I FOUND NONE, but I still took some few short clips and photos just to show others that I have been to Bangkok. Right now I am completely bored and quite pissed off as things r not going my way. This internet cafe sux just like yesterday as it does not have a USB port to connect my adapter. It has in front but it actaully is not connected. regards, bhanja(Bangkok,Thailand) |

Bhanja, thanks for your mini-travelogue from Bangkok! Even if you haven't found "interesting subjects", feel free to post photos of people, places, airports, buildings - everyday life that you're so good at capturing. I haven't been to Bangkok, like many of us at Sajha, so anything you can post will be appreciated! NepaliThhito, nice picture of the two friends playing instruments. You think they actually making a living doing that? Honeybuzz, is it still snowing where you live?! And the blur in the flower photo -is that intentional? Here's one of mine rather blurry flower photos. I didn't think it would come out this way but was pleasantly surprised with the way it came out:

Note: I worked in the back yard, all of my Spring Break(last year) to create this Zen Rock Garden. My first attempt at landscaping! The picture, alas, did not come out clear. ZEN GARDEN I am planting pebbles, Not with a desire, to grow them into flourishing jungles, but with a hope, they will beautify, my life with their silence, serenity and quiet presence. I am planting pebbles, So, I may admire the unspoken, unadorned and untouched, So, I can touch the texture, drink in the imperfection of a perfect nature, And in the silence of my meditation, think of you, and what you are to me. Yes, I am planting pebbles, And when I am gone, the essence will remain, surrounding the sagacious Buddha, cast in stone, reverence and wisdom. like I plant my energy in you, Not to grow a Certain future, But to revel in a beautiful present

titomitho i don't think the boys in the photo actually make living playing music instrument in the street like that. they probably are just practising and earning few extra bucks on the way. but there are people who make living that way. i have seen few professionals coming and playing in the park at times. they sell their CDs and get money from the spectators. i have seen them playing in different cities. seems to me that its the way they make their living. |

Thanks, Sitara and NepaliThhito! NepaliThhito, you see "bokeh" (blurry background) in the flower photo because I used a wide aperture and a telephoto lens(300mm, or ~9X in digital cameras). Sitara, that was a beautiful poem! Your style reminded me of Blake's Songs of Innonence and Innocence - where he uses drawings to complement his poems. |

Dananah talent hoina majburi! I had planted flowers and veggies but the bugs ate them all (when I was away on a trip to KTM), so in desperation I planted pebbles! Naak tyasai chuccho... bho, bho, why you after my nose?!!! :( TitoMitho: Thanks for the compliment though undeserved! One of those lazy hazy times when, the future seems too vague to worry about! Well Monika, the photograph of the snow and traditional eastern style building was good. the winter scene gives the photograph a monochrome feel however I would have cropped the photograph at 1/3 at the left of the photograph and 1/4 at the bottom because the photgraph looks too busy with tree branches. With the darker shades of trees ,streets below and a hazy day brings the mood of the scene. The The problem of shooting snow is that even at perfect meter reading of a camera, a camera always regards snow as 18% grey therefore the snow appears grey rather than white in photographs therefore it is always good to overexpose 1 or 2 stops of light (if you are using SLR camera) to make it appear white. |

Well TitoMitho your photograph from Boston is good, the most important aspect of this photograph is the time, action and prespective. These three factors are not always friendly with each other therefore it is rare to capture such moment very often. Since you mentioned the fact that how these two people on the phone seem so close despite their actual distance from each other. The simple trick to do this is to use of telephoto lens. I guess you must had had used a telephoto lens, a short-telephoto (50-70 mm) I guess. |

My advice: never put photographs for a show that are still captures from a video camera simply because the video cameras were never built to capture still shots and are really awefull at the the quality they can offer on still shots. Use a still camera instead, even if it is a use-n-throw use point-n-shoot camera and if you are an amature inthusiast, try to use SLR camera. |

A million dollar question - "How do you differentiate sunset from sunrise?" I mean, most photos are spelled out for viewers "Here is the photo of Sunrise" or "Here is the photo of Sunset", with exception to baby sun in Teletubbies. Is there a way to capture Sunrise or Sunset without having to add a caption? Bhanja, loved your photos. If it is not too much to ask, could you write a short summary at what we are suppose to be looking at? e.g the Temples are breathtaking, but we are clueless as to what or where it is. Thank you. |

OU812, ya it is hard to distinguish sunset and sunrise. i generally thought that sunset had more of reddish tinge and sunrise yellowish, but depends on how the photo is taken. i have taken few photos myself where the atmostphere is red, during sunrise. so guess you will have to read the caption to make sure about it ............ bhanja your photos have been pleasing to eyes as ever .......... you have captured great scenes from bangkok. to me looking at good photo is more important than the details about it so am compeletely satisfied by looking just at the photos you have posted, without any description. neural great photos, always wanted to come to hawaii of the land of rising sun but i am struck here in the north pole. if you are here let me know |

Most of the digital camera on the market are pretty good enough to take good pictures.I believe the in order to take god pictures there many factors that plays part.Among those parts, I find compoistion most important as u can control. I guess expensive camera does not equate to good photography. But I have t admit I use Sony DSC F828. OK Here is a confession: Bhanja, Nepalithito, Titomitho and Chucchididi (from the first photo thread) inspired me into dabbling with photography! Amazingly, I never imagined taking photos quite the same way as I have seen you all do. And all the others who have contributed to this thread; I can't express my gratitude enough! Sadly, many of the threads (especially, those that start out interesting/inspiring/encouraging) destruct into mere trash due to a couple of malcontents; but not so this thread! Keep up the wonderful vibes going! |

thankyou monika, bhanja, nepalithito and all for such an encouraging comment. regarding photography i am still an amateur and learning with every click. regarding tips, i use large shutter speed with less aperture. for the second picture i have taken 2.5 seconds as shutter speed and 6.3 as aperture. for the last picture the setting was 2" and F7.1. i keep experimenting with different setting and out of few some come out good. hope it helps :) |

why don't ya guys also mention the make of the camera used, exposure reading, shutter speed, as well as types of lenses used? the pic of the small boy peeking from behing the street pole is really good. i bet all pics were taken with digital cameras. |
| bhanja | Posted
on 18-May-04 05:20 AM
Karampa y not.It is good idea. As far as I know not all of us r using digital camera.I know there r guys who are using SLR cameras or even point n shoot. As for me I am using Sony DSC F828, it is as latest model from Sony which has 4 sensor, unlike other model which uses RGB, it has RGB+E.Frnakly speaking, I am new to photography that is y I chose digital over the SLR to cut cost in developing the film. To my knowledge, digital has still a long way to catch up with the manual. I know that some people might say that ,"Oh, I C that is taken by digital camera n just shrug off" Actually taking good photo does not mean that colour has to b good, composition has to make up for it too.Don't forget that light is also of essence for proper exposure; no mattter how expensive camera one uses there is no way he is going to get good picture. So far I have found taking photo a joy but sometime fear scolding from people whose photos I take without seeking their permission.I know that it is wrong but if I were to seek their permisssion, I will not b able to catch the mood or effect I want to achieve. Many a times I have hestited.I wonder if any of u feel like me. I guess both digital and manul has their advantages and disadvantages.Digital is very prone to blur image even if there is minimal shake during photo taking process but not the manual,it is more forgiving in this department. It may come as a surprise to many that people who uses manual camera with film has thier photos adjusted when they send their photo for developing. So u c by right those of u who are using a manual cameras are not actually getting the picture with the orginal exposure; the photo developer has made some adjustment to make it look better. So don't be surprise if u send the same photo for developing and get completely different colour looking photo. The perfect camera has yet to come. Both the digital and manual has disadvantages and advantgaes. But for ordinary user and budget minded people, 3 mega pixel with 4 optical zoom lense digital camerai s enough. What is your say ??? regards, Bhanja (GC,Singapore) |

Yes bhanja, you are right: shots taken with SLRs are not developed with correct exposures. This has got to do with economics - cost, ie. So what I believe the developer does is runs a 'test' and settles on one optimum exposure for all shots. This is understandable. But what I absolutely hate is that prints are usually machine-'cropped'... i mean 6X4 prints (say) do not correspond with the images on the contact sheet. It's awful, when feet are cropped or the foreground disappears. No wonder big names like Mani Lama have their own film processing unit, for quality control. Shoulda posted 'A House on a Prairie' and 'Turning flesh and body into soul' as .GIF files instead of .JPG files. JPG images suck on websites. That's why I sharpened these images using Photoshop - shouldn't have done that. They do not look 'natural'. The third pic 'Little Buddha' is a .GIF image, not photoshop-sharpened. Therefore, looks quite natural. I agree with you that shots taken with digital cameras are damn good too, and nothing to feel 'inferior' about. Mine were, however, taken with a Nikon FM3A, using a Nikkor 28-120 mm lens. Didn't take down the f-stop and shutter speed readings - so i've forgotten. Usually i note these things down religiously. The pic in the middle was taken using a flashlight, which is a 'no no' amongst the purists. I don't care - I am not a purist, I'm a heathen, a pagan. Incidentally, the pic 'Little Buddha' was shot in Paro Dzong, Bhutan. This Dzong was also a setting for Bertolucci's 'Little Buddha', hence the caption. This guy Dalchen Gurung who became a politically very influential guy in Paro back in the days was murdured in this Dzong (Michael Hutt mentions this in his book 'Unbecoming Citizens'). Dalchen is credited with bringing settlers of Nepali origin to Paro. He also worked as an administrator / 'tax' or 'tithe' collector and rose to become a formidable power. With his murder, the seed of mistrust of the powers-that-be was sown. Fascinating story! |
