Guns N' Roses top rock riff poll

Top of the poll: Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose
Guns N' Roses' anthem Sweet Child O' Mine has the greatest guitar riff ever, according to a poll in a music monthly.
Total Guitar magazine's readers put it in top place, ahead of Nirvana's grunge anthem Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love came third, followed by Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water.

Total Guitar editor Scott Rowley said: "To a new generation of guitarists, Guns N' Roses are more thrilling than the Sex Pistols."

He added: "This poll shows the so-called canon of classic rock - the Led Zeppelins, Eric Claptons, Jimi Hendrix - is as popular as ever, but being added to all the time.

"Riffs are an interesting measure of people's tastes because they're usually easy to play and very catchy - they're the hook of the song."

The magazine's last poll, conducted five years ago, saw Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love top the list, followed by Smoke On The Water and Layla, recorded by Eric Clapton as Derek and the Dominoes.

More than 2,000 readers took part in the poll.

The top 20 riffs:

1. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses
2. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
3. Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
4. Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple
5. Enter Sandman - Metallica
6. Layla - Derek & The Dominoes/Eric Clapton
7. Master Of Puppets - Metallica
8. Back In Black - AC/DC
9. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix
10. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
11. Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
12. All Right Now - Free
13. Plug In Baby - Muse
14. Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
15. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love - Van Halen

Eric Clapton, John lenon and paul MCCartney are missing on the list :-(

(bu hui ba!)
hansy420 Posted on 03-May-04 02:21 PM

Whats top 100 based upon? popularity? technique? speed? education? and what not. The one we got here sure looks like its based MORE on popularity. I'm surprised steve morse isn't on the list.
bhattu Posted on 03-May-04 05:18 PM

if it was based on popularity then tony iommi wouldn't be in the list
we have to remember this is NOT TOP 100 GUITARIST this is TOP 100 METAL GUITARIST
eric clapton never played metal john lenon and paul mccartney as far as i know were not from metal band
that takes care of ISOLATED FREAK
read the title carefully it says
"100 GREATEST METAL GUITARIST OF ALL TIME"
AND NOT
"100 GREATEST GUITARIST OF ALL TIME"
THANKU
chanke Posted on 03-May-04 06:32 PM

I am suprise that sunil upretti is not in the lists. hahahaha
krishna Posted on 03-May-04 07:35 PM

Bhattu..If I am not mistaken I think Eric Clapton did play metal too. His band, CREAM, you remember them. And also when he first started a band, he played along with Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck, who are both fine rock guitarists. Not sure what the band name was though. I believe it was the mixture of blues and metal that took Clapton to the Hall of Fame.
bhattu Posted on 03-May-04 07:45 PM

KRISHNA JI CREAM WAS A PROGRESSIVE ROCK BAND NOT METALLL
HIS OTHER BAND WAS JOHN MAYELL'S BLUES BREAKER WHICH WAS A BLUES BAND
HIS OTHER BAND WAS THE YARDBIRDS LATER JIMMY PAGE AND JEFF BECK ALSO PLAYED IN YARDBIRDS
WELL IT DEPENDS ON U IF U WANT TO CALL THESE BANDS "METAL"
I WOULD RATHER PUT THEM IN BLUES AND PROG ROCK CATAGORY

LONG LIVE THE KING
LONG LIVE METAL
hansy420 Posted on 04-May-04 07:53 AM

If it was based on popularity then tony iommi wouldn't be in the list "

Then what is it based on? Nothing else fits in except popularity, just by looking at this huge list.
