Searching for freely available software for Finite Element mesh generation (2D and/or 3D). Thank you! Akhilesh |

I don't know what you are talking about ;) but I know about this fine search machine called Google, and i googled and I found this link. -- http://www-users.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/~roberts/software.html#ADMesh If thats not what you want, the google yourself! ;) |

Akhilesh ji, There can be several free softwares made by ameatures and available in internet at free of cost. None of them (almost none) will be useful to you if you want to download and use them instantly. If you are going to use your own Finite Element code, then, you surely need a pre processor, especially, finite element mesh generator. But, I suggest you to try GeoSlope's Stress or Plaxis (evaluation versions) software. GeoSlope offers student version in 10dollar or so and it can be useful to get FE Mesh data exported to text file. For last 3 months, I was extensively using PLAXIS (2-D) version, its has good pre and post processing and I remember the evaluation version that I got from 12th ARC in Singapore allows you to use upto 100 elements (if I remember correctly). I am currently using the book Programming the FEM by Smith and Griffiths. Well, there used to a romanian guy in Smith's lab in Manchestor lUniv (named Dan) and you can find a 2-D and 3-D pre and post processor in his website. I think you can check the book by Smith and Griffiths, its the best book in FEM especially for those in geotechnical engineering. The book has huge list of sample programs, and these can be downloaded from Numerical Algorithm Group 's official website. You need to refer to book understand the programs, but, its worth trying these programs. It has its own mesh generators, unfortunately, it can handle only regular shaped domains, and you may need to modify the code to suit your specific needs. I love this book and its my most favorite book ever since 1989. The 1998 (??) edition of the book has programs in Fortran 90, and I hate this edition because its crucade as long as its readibility is concerned. So, 1988 edition was written in Fortran 77 and its really easy to read. Well, Zenkiewicz and Taylor's 200 edition also offers the program free of charge, provided you buy and the license is valid only for 90 days. Smith and G's book's programs are all free and unlimited use and can be modified. So, you can try Numerical Algorithm Group and they have several other pre and post processors in their website. Thank you Kalanki ji for searching on the google to help me. I had already tried without success (could not find good software). Thank you HG jee for your informative response. It will certainly help me a lot. Akhilesh |
