Estimated Cost of ARV Therapy in Nepal

Reported number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Nepal as ofd November, 2003 = 3,244
World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 10 - 15 percent of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) would require ARV Therapy, therefore estimated number requiring ARV Therapy in Nepal = 324 - 486
Cost of ARV drugs for one person per month = NRs. 3,000.00 (<)
The cist of ARV Therapy for 250 people for 7 month --- 250 persons X NRs. 3,000.00 per person x 7 months = NRs. 5,250,000.00
Estimated cost for treatment of Opportunistic Infections (ois) for 250 person for 7 months --- 250 persons X NRs. 500.00 per person X 4 times X 7 months = NRs. 3,500,000.00
Estimated cos of CD4 count Reagent for 7 months --- 250 persons X NRs. 2,500.00 per person x 3 tests = NRs. 1,875,000
Total Estimated Cost = NRs. 10, 625,000 (+10 per cent contingencies)
US $ 143,581.00 (+10 per cent contingencies)
I am hoping that these facts and figures will shed some light to the plight of PLWHA in Nepal as well as the challenge to the health care delivery system in Nepal which is already overstretched.
