This may be of interest to former and present GAA members and well-wishers. GAA, by the way, is Godavari Alumni Association. It is in Kathmandu. With Fr. Watrin's death last February, the GAA's moderator seat became vacant. It is almost certain now that Fr. Greg Sharkey, SJ, will come on board as GAA's next moderator. For the past few years, Fr. Greg has been shuttling between California (where he teaches) and Kathmandu (where he lives and does research). Fr. Greg -- a popular teacher and an intellectually stimulating friend to many of us 20- and 30-something GAA folks -- grew up in Boston, around Cambridge, Mass. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and of Weston School of Theology. He holds a PhD in Newari Buddhism from Oxford University. It would be a delight to have Fr. Greg as moderator at the GAA to provide advice to the Executive Committee and support for GAA's activities. ********* A new scholarship fund has been created in honor of Fr. Watrin, who passed away last February. Called the "Fr. Watrin Memorial Scholarship Fund", it is run by a committee and administred by GAA. It will start giving out scholarships to: a) underprivileged children across Nepal. b) children whose education has been interrupted because of the ongoing conflict. c) young girls in villages. At a recent fund-raising dinner, held in Fr. Watrin's memory, a total of Rs. 50 Lakh was collected in a matter of few hours. The fund's endowment currently stands at over One Karod and 55 Lakh rupees. After serving as president for two years, Mahendra Man Shakya aka Honda will be stepping down this June. Honda, who came back from Boston to start and run a chain of lucrative momo-restaurants in Kathmandu, has done a remarkable job turning GAA around to make it a thriving, vibrant and influential organisation. Kudos to him. oohi ashu ktm, nepal
