Rumor is rife in KTM that PM Thapa is about to resign today (friday afternoon) at 3 pm.

If that happens, then, what will happen next?

Will Nepal, according to one theory making the rounds, get her first female prime-minister?

We live in interesting times.

Shailaja didi is my priority after all she has the courage to stand against corruption and male domination be it in the party or society.
Sahana Pradhan is also capable, but she comes no where near Shailaja didi.

Ooops, he did! Bihano bihanai....

cut and paste from KOL ;)

KATHMANDU, May 7 - Spokesperson of ruling Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Roshan Karki said that Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa has resigned from his post Friday morning.
Talking to Kantipuronline on a phone, Karki said, “the PM resigned today morning.”

Sources said that Prime Minister has gone to Narayanhiti Royal Palace to submit his resignation letter. Prime Minister Thapa is due to address the Nation at 3 this afternoon on Nepal Television and Radio Nepal. (dds)

Thapa resigned. Now questions on my mind are:

1. Who is going to be the next PM? Will KIng let MKN be PM if proposed again by the parties.

2. Now that "fresh bone" (PM position) is available, how the "dogs" (Parties) going to act? Just fight for the chair or do they have their senses back into their khopadi?

3. Who says Nepal is not run by US and India? Thapa resigned within 2 weeks of Cristina Rocca's statement that US wants a all-party type government in Nepal?

Interesting time it is!!!

What is in the pandora's box, time will tell? Yet, the box better be with some vision that takes care of the current "Snafu."

what nepal needs is a dictator. We need a monarchy. All this Parliament is bullshit. This way there will be less corruption. King may have his assistant but strictly under his supervision.\

This is indeed very interesting. Thapa resigned and the protesting parties are happy. When will these so-called leaders with no leadership skills whatsoever realize that, this is certainly not the right time to be taking out victory julus in/around kathmandu. Instead they should be sad that the country has been following a "wrong" preceedent: You don't like the PM, don't let him complete the term. Forget about the term, don't even let him work. Force him to resign. I think this undemocratic culture in our democracy has created all the problems. Not a single PM has been able to finish his 5 year tenure. Also, these leaders should realize that this "force resignation" culture is institutionalized in Nepali politics and they themselves wouldn't be able to complete a full 5 eyar term, whether they come to power through elections or appointments.

1. The PM and his council of minsiters know that they won't be finishing their term, so they don't take their work seriously, and engage in corruption.

2. Even if you have a dedicated PM and his team, they don't accomplish much either because they get kicked out before they can plan something to move the nation ahead.

3. Buying and selling of votes (if there is a parliament) or buyuying/selling support (in the absence of parliament)- guess where all that money comes from? Of course, corruption! A group of 28 plays against a group of 56 and the latter buys the whole 28 team for 5 million each!

4. Read this: " Likewise, Roshan Karki the spokesperson of RPP said, “ PM has just resigned. Now the party will decide as to how to move ahead for the formation of all-party government.” "- What does this tell you? Do the parties even know anything abhout planning and play the game? I don't think so. "Now the party will decide"- I mean, what the hell were they doing for the last 15 days or so, if not planning the next move/step?

5. Soon there will be another rounds of protests by the 4 political parties to oust whoever becomes the PM.

6. The solution :

(i) Either the King should form an emergency cabinet with people who are very unpolitical but popular, directly under his command and name it something like "advisory council", whose duty would be to hold elections as soon as possible.

(ii) The rotating PM system: Congress will rule for 4 months, then UML for 4 months, then Sadvawana for 4 months, then Rohit's Party for 4 months, then Deuba for 4 months and again back to Girija Congress... If we have this system, then believe me, the leaders wouldn't be talking about the peoples' rights, parliament and elections. They will be happy eating their fair share of power pie (then hopefully, they will let us commoners live happily too).

very well said Iso. Nepal lai timi jasto chora(chori) haru dherai chahincha.

I am sure those stupid leaders like (girija, makune, KPB) will be fighting each others to be a PM.

as a nepali I care about peace and stabilty rather than who is governing the country.
mildseven Posted on 07-May-04 10:22 AM

I agree with freak. Gyanendra should do what mahendra did. Arrest all politicians, throw them in jails and form an advisory council to make up for his inexperience in governing. All these hired andolankaaris the netas have brought from ouside kathmandu will return home after a few days.
Kale_Ko_Chartikala Posted on 07-May-04 12:37 PM

IF’s jeu:

Tyo ta flawed logic bhayena ra? As far as I have understood, Thapa never had a 5-year term. 5-year term is for elected PMs. I think his term was always controlled by a remote control held by King. This time the "channel" has been changed on Cristina Rocca's suggestion, it seems.
isolated freak Posted on 07-May-04 12:53 PM

KKkC,

You are not understanding one thing here: The US does not really care what sort of govt. we have in Nepal. The US and India are quite supportive of the King at this point, and they would support his every move at this point of time. The US has its own interests, India has its own interests and the doners have their own interests. However, what's interesting to note is: The US is actually supporting strong leaders worldwide in its fight against terror campaign. So, all party govt and blah blah is just in rhetoric.. Look at Pakistan. The US policy is to support any regime taht provides stability, peace and not interfare with the American interests. In Nepal's case, i am yet to figure out what the american interests are.. probably securing Coca Cola plants? Its not idealism that dictates foreign policies my friend, its realism.
Kale_Ko_Chartikala Posted on 07-May-04 01:35 PM

IF jyu:
I fully understand that.
My only point in the above posting was - You cannot claim Thapa to have 5 year term. That's all.

I am not suggesting that US cares for democracy in Nepal. In my opinion, what US wants in Nepal is there be no maoist stronghold. If there would be strong maoist stronghold, then they may grow weed in their territory and export it to west or they may use their land to culture anti-Americans, like in Afganistan. If Afganisthan is rugged, Nepal is "rugged ko bau".

On the other hand, what India wants is a weak government in Singhdurbar that it can manupulate. That way, it can "keep Nepal in Balance" and use it as it sees fit to take "advantage" of Nepal. When Nepal is weak, India benefits.
