Dear Nepali brothers and sisters.

I was at a book store recently and I saw a book among the new releases featuring Shiva Ji as the front cover. It’s called HOLY COW. At first it didn’t make any sense, but then I had myself thinking, what would they do if it was Jesus, Mohammed (if he had a face)?
Here’s the link….
http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=0767918142#praise

Now the book is circulating around the major book stores. You can call me anything, but shouldn’t we, Hindus, be offended? We tend to be more liberal than any other religion but that doesn’t mean we cannot see plain stupidity. Here’s a woman who’s making a living disregarding that there’re billions of people who worship this figure. She puts a pink sunglass. What a dumb joke (even if it is). I don’t need to read the book, the cover discourages me.
The publisher (RandomHouse) of this book is one of the biggest in the US; Broadway being one of their subsidiary and they clearly allowed this book to be printed thinking that nobody will care. Somebody needs to shake them for their carelessness.

I’m calling all the Hindus, Buddhist and all other religion to come together to show our concern. Here’s what you can do:

1.Write a letter to the publisher, Broadway Books:
Publicity Department
Broadway Books
1745 Broadway
New York, NY 10019

2.Email them: bwaypub@randomhouse.com
3.Give your review for this book at the major online book stores
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0767915747/qid=1084237775/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-3408422-9028966?v=glance&s=books
Barnes N Noble: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=ZYw1giLp9J&isbn=0767915747&itm=1

4.Write directly to Ms. Macdonald and to the cover designer
5.Pass this news to all other friends. Email them about the links above and let us boycott future copies of the book.

You can make some difference if you try. I’ve already sent letters to the publisher, author and even the cover designer.
Thanks.

What is offensive about the title "Holy Cow"? What exactly ires you... care to explain?

I would understand, somewhat, if it was titled "Holy Beef" or "Holy Burger"!
lizardking Posted on 10-May-04 07:22 PM

Read twice and I still couldn't understand you being offended Bob Marley. Yeah I have same thought as Sitara. What's so offensive about it?

By the way Sitara in Nepal? Hope you didnt take the route of Baali coz it sucks.

SITARA Posted on 10-May-04 07:47 PM

Hi Lizardking:

Thanks for asking, but I am still in the US. I will be visiting Bali to meet with a family member; a vacation I am looking forward to. I believe Bali is breathtakingly beautiful. The only thing that "sucks" is the airfare! :(
Badmash Posted on 10-May-04 08:08 PM

I too, don't understand why we should be offended. What's wrong with Mahadev's picture on the cover and what's wrong with the title 'holy cow'? According to hinduism, cows are holy, aren't they? Bob Marley..what have you been smoking?

The picture of Shiva...that's the insult to a Hindu God...with pink, woman sunglass...if you've looked carefully. Now if you think it's no big deal, then I'm sorry for starting this thread. Nevermind. Once Nepali always Nepali....

dyamn Posted on 11-May-04 12:30 AM

... it's an insult to the hinduism and the image of the god that we've been worshipping since our childhood..

in trying to adapt to the white society , i think some of you guys have forgotten your core values..
America gave you the residency and freedom to stay and work and you gave them your values in return.... although America never asks you to give up your real identity, you feel obligated just to look and act like oridinary joe dirt... ., and whiile trying to ' fit- in', so u don't get picked on by the Americans for being foreigners you have set yourself to fit into thier values so000 much- that your tradition and originality don't mean shit to you anymore. SHAME TO YOU.

.. you don't see insult to the Hinduism when you see a pink sun glasses being put on to the Hindu god.. No wonder, hinduism is dissapearing from the worlD cuz of the phony hindus like you who can't wait to eat beef as soon as you leave Nepal and as soon as you reach the thai airport. no wonder they pick on Hindus, saying " holy cows" and shit like that.. they make fun of Indians and all the darkies in over all...but you don't have guts to stand out , you rather try your phony accent , dye your hair, and do your best to look/sound american.... thats pathetic...

I'm not starting a hatred against any group.. but i find it extermly shameful that sitara and ssome other friends don't see anything wrong when they insulted the picture of our god.. i wonder , what would've happend if they had put a picute of virgin mary wearing play boy bikini , or mohomad(sp, sorry) eating bacon, or jesus gettting seduced on the cross and his penis being excited ... ya you got the idea something that would bother other religion... then it would've been a big deal ....

weak you people are in your mind, insecure , phony and hypocrite you are... you have no shame to lose your originality, yoru culture, your pride ... no kiddin' they don't respect you.. they call you darkeyes from the third wold no matter how much you try to sound american, how much effort you do to turn that balck hair to blonde they still pick on you hahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahaha.... hahahahahaha...

I hope i've pissed you guys enough... well, if you have any sense left inside you, if yor brain can still remember some old moments , then think about that temple by your house where your dad used to take you.. think about that moment when your mom used to worship the god in your house. ya they're making fun of your god.. they're making fun of you.. they're making fun of your ansistors, theey are making fun of your parents , thier beliefs.....they are being unfair... and you ask here, what's so offensive??????/ holyyy shittt to you guys....

sorry guys, getting little carried away. i would've said the same thing if someone had insulted christ, or other relegious values.... i'm not into phanaticism but can'jt stand such kind low degradation to a group .......

and you ask what's so offensive/?????? you can lick your green card as much as you want, and you can dye your hair as many times as you want.. but the truth always remains there.. your original hair color is black, your originality is Nepali..

i say,,,, holyyyyyyyyyyy shittttt

dyamn bahadur...

kalebhut Posted on 11-May-04 02:19 AM

Shiva ji looks hip and cool on the portrayal. I think its the modern look of our shiva ji.To the folks out there who find this portrayal humiliating- don't worry this is only a depiction of a hindu god. God is imperceptible and ubiquitous, it’s a hindu belief. Nobody has seen shiva ji. The pictures of Ram, shiva, and parvati you see hanging in your mom’s puja-kotha is only an imaginary work of art. If you see god in it then you are a dog.

God and religion- its only a faith. What I believe in is, one should see god in provision of food to the hungry, yarn to the naked, help to the needy and etc. It is because of some conservative bigots that make this religion and the picture an issue. Actually, this is already a boring topic skirmishing over this prowess of uncircumcised hindu believers and circumcised muslisms and Christians.. Bob marley, I advise you take another blow of joint before this snap gives your head more ache and bring this useless issue unto everyone’s attention.

SITARA Posted on 11-May-04 03:49 AM

Are you quite done yet, Damn ji??? Good! Now, go take a cold shower or jump in a lake; hyperventilation incurred by trumped up assumptions is not good for your health nor the deepening fissures in your bony plate! As for values clarification, we don't feel under any compulsion to clarify ours!
SITARA Posted on 11-May-04 04:30 AM

And oh, High Priest of Hindu Morality, do refrain from focusing upon Sitara in your every discussion, it starts getting old and myopic!
Perhaps, you can find a trelis to lean on, everytime your frail arguments need a step up!

---------------------------------

Bob Marley ji; Religion and spirituality are two different things. Hopefully, we are more grounded in the Hindu Spirituality than in the posters or book covers of man-made items.

As for being Nepali... what's in a name right?
Badmash Posted on 11-May-04 06:46 AM

Well, after looking at the picture closely, it does seem inappropriate for Mahadev to be wearing women’s sunglasses. It went unnoticed in a smaller picture. But Dyam bahadur, you didn’t have to bark like a mad dog to make your point. Keep your filthy illogical comments to yourself.

Whoever designed the cover certainly does not seem to have any regard to Hinduism, and for that, Bob Marley may have a point to make.

Kalebhut, your abstract concept of god and religion is good. Meanwhile, Hinduism does exist.

Sitara, man made item it may be, but so are the many temples in every street corner in Nepal. Don't you think?
JagaltayBhoot Posted on 11-May-04 07:17 AM

Whats all the fuss about?

I personally dont find anything offending about it. Our Lord Shiva maybe changing with the times :) In some posters, Lord shiva is shown as half-himself-and-half-parvati. Lady's sunglasses looks good on him, in my view.

the other one Posted on 11-May-04 07:46 AM

I have a mixfeelings about this picture, I think the cover itself is the cheapest I have ever seen, but again I have to read the book to judge the cover right?? then I began to psychoanalise and came to the conclusion that the auther is a lesbian but very much in love with the other half of mahadev as jagalteybhoot has mentioned. And to finally chill our sajhaite dreadmaiestro and forebearer of this thread, just think, Mahadev is in vacation to the US with multiple Visa and just might be in Jamaika Man, toking up and riding into the wild side atop Nundi and might even be looking out for you...get them paraphernalia ready :)-***
SITARA Posted on 11-May-04 08:15 AM

Badmash ji, I try not to allot the same/equal value to ALL man-made items! If you do, it's your prerogative: some find Gods in book covers, others find them in temples and still others find them in nature.
MillionDollars Posted on 11-May-04 08:42 AM

Ya .. Bob.. This is totally offensive. As a matter of fact, most westerners are totally ignorant of the world we live in. This is unacceptable.
Bob Marley Posted on 11-May-04 08:56 AM

Everybody...
Thanks for your comments. Good , Bad... everybody's welcomed.
The story or the writer's experience in India has nothing to do with the cover, especially Shiva Ji.
Here's a link that I found; atleast somebody to support me, if not my fellow country people.

Please quit acting like you are smart and sophisticated, because you are not, period You claim to be all logical and educated, kind and considerate- and what not in here but you make sense like a 5 – yr old , and to tell you the truth you are not that special. That I have knows from reading your messages for over a year. So, it's about time to wake up smell the toast burning.
When someone says something which goes against your views, you get furious and start spitting dead English words in your redundant style of writing. However, the irony is you are always there to support free expression; hypocrite? And ya, it’s getting old and myopic how you getting irritated on everything I write, but that does not mean I am going to stop writing how I feel.
You need to grow up sitara, it's about that time.

And you all sitara supporters: GET A Real Girl

Thanks, and have a nice day sitara ji…

Damn ji, thats not very nice, as much as you tell everyone here about being neplai and hindu, your aghast personal attacks on Sitaraji runs very amock to your own preachings..if you are so Shaivait and all knowing you must know the story and morale behind Ganesh Parvati and the Cat.. if you wanna do all that talk, if you fail to walk the walk.....you and yours amounts to nothing.

..just cant bear such attacks on anyone.

Retali8 Posted on 11-May-04 03:06 PM

Bob Marley bro, I have the book Holy Cow but to my amazement, the cover has Lord Siva WITH OUT the pink ladies goggles. Incase you don't trust me then go to the following site.
http://www.angusrobertson.com.au/featuredbook1.asp?StoreUrl=angusrobertson&bookid=1863253262&db=au

I read the book, I found it hillarious and enjoyed reading it.
I see no reason why we have to be offended even if the cover has Lord Shiva with the pink goggles. Once I saw Lord Shiva's poster in Pashupatinath with beard and mustache...
niksnpl Posted on 11-May-04 03:14 PM

here's the real picture!!!!!!!!!

nsshrestha Posted on 11-May-04 03:25 PM

Bob Marley,

Is it insult to Hindu gods to be painted on pink sun glasses?

A point to be considered, why all the Hindu gods look faminine?

The very first artist who painted the picture of Hindu gods
were dominantly male and defined beauty as faminine traits.

If sunglasses existed then, Siva would have been on sunglasses,
as pink is the most faminine color of choice, surly in Pink sunglasses.

So what is there to fuss about?
Bob Marley Posted on 11-May-04 03:30 PM

Retali...I've no idea why do they have the one with the sunglass? Did they added later on to humilate some people? My personal view is that these people think that Hindu people would not protest, so they add more clothings to Shiva. May be the next issue might have some more accessories. I've no problem with the one you've just showed. It's completly accetable.
And about being offended and what you saw in Pashupati, it's my belief that my religion should be treated with respect like all other religions and I do get offended if someone from outside steps into my territory, especially who makes money making fun of my religion. If you're not offended, then it's your story. But do I have the common sense and the right to be offended? I'm darn sure...I'm.
Look I started this thread just to get few support from my fellow Nepali people. That's it. If you don't care, just don't yammer on with all nonsense especially Sitara. You've the right to say what you want, but just don't write anything rubbish. Don't you have a job?
Dyamn, Million and Bad...thanks for the support.
dyamn Posted on 11-May-04 04:33 PM

well said Bob bro, well said...
It's too bad that some people in here don't see the exploitation from white race towards the other beliefs or darkeys' religion. Just to let some people know in here, Shiva, Bishnu and other hindu gods pictures are made according to they are decribed in the holy books written thousands of years ago. For ex, shiva : nilkantha, naga dhari, trisul dhari, bag ko bastra pahiyaray ko etc... the scripts describe how gods look like and the artist paint someone close to it... pink goggles is no where mentioned in our Hindu holy books which describe how Shiva ji look.
It is normal for real hindus to get offended to see our belief, our holy script and our god getting exploited by some white asss who thinks hindu religion is a joke. They must think that hindu religion is all about not eating cow, which is funny for them and doing kamasutra all the time , and ya with 36 millions gods, multiple gods assigned for each person.
What they don't understand is the real theme of the hindu religion. 36 milions gods : god is everywhere ; kamasutra: one of the very many good discoveries found by hindus like Ayurvedha; not eating cow: respect to the mammal which gives milk just like mother.
WE hindus have never been assertive to protect our religion. Christains , they just call it a axis of evil, muslims they die for thier religion, Isrealies -palinstines they do what we can never think theyw ould do for their religion. It's good that we are not phanatic like other religion followers int he world, but that does not mean we should let others play with our belief and make dirty humor in expense of our religion cuz they know hindus are harmless people unlike muslims and christains. What's more pathetic is when some self declared intellectual and shopisticated people , who were raised in the Hindu family but just because they are in the western world for few years they think they can look better and sound liberal if they join some jackass in making fun of thier origin.Rather than protesting such low degradation they take it as fun. Rather than telling them the real theme of the hindu religion and hindu gods they potray those gods as silly characters to the westernes and joing them in their silly act of making fun of thier own religion. For example, i've heard lots of people saying shiva is a gajadi, Krishna was a sex machine who ucked with 16k gopinees.. but they never spend any time to understand why shiva smoked weed, and why krishna was called for having 16 k gopenes... I asked some good hindu people and and found this out ... shiva smoked weed cuz he believs in freedom and doing he's a liberal god. He also hangs out with ghosts and controls them from doing bad to human. he drank the poison and is called nilkantha... regarding krishna, all the gopines in his village started seeing krishan (a good looking kid ) in thir boyfriend /husbands cuz krisha = bishu = god is in everwhere , so 16k gophinees were in love with thier gopies who were also krishnas , as krisha is everywhere....
Rather than understanding the real theme some jerks from the western world make fun of hinduism.. and sad thing is some people don't see what's so offensive about it????

well, i can't tell how you should live up your life and what you should believe on , but i jut want to tell you and your jack assez friends that we'll be Hindus , proud hindus and we will be protesting these cheap acts with peaceful and civilized manner for ever....

take care,shiva bhakta,
Dayam baadur...

Dyam and BobMarley , you couples are the most stupid and have the most outdated concept of religion. The picture was just of shiva with pink glasses, which could also be interpreted as his manifestation. Pictures of Hindu god and goddess in toilet covers, slippers or of Buddhas image on a bakini is deplorable but for gods sake , its just a sun glass !!!! don't make a mountain out of ant hill !!
dyamn Posted on 11-May-04 10:02 PM

.. harry potter, go to a t-shirt designer's place and order a couple of t-shirts. Tell him/her to make one with a Cross of Jesus christ on the background and on the front Virgin mary wearing bikini and flashing and have the designer write something like , ' holy flashing' .
On the other t-shirt have the designer put a big piggie on the background and some bacon on a plate in the front, and have an old man who can resemble -mohomad(sp, sorry) eating the bacon out of that plate.. and have the designer write on the botton something like, ' holy bacon'
then one friday, wear that piggy t-shirt and go to a mosque , i would say go to Palestine , Iraq or any muslim dominated place, but it might not be convinient for you , so hopefully mosque works.
The the following sunday, go o a catholic chruch and fellowship with some christains. ( if you're still alive hehe)
.. and you will get the answer....

as far as the pic goes, it's not just about sun glasses , i't s about humulation towards hindu believers... which you coooooll dudeeees obviously do not understand what it means.. but for those of us- who it means offensive and humulation why don't they let hindus live and practice thier religion without degrading or humulating our beliefs?? is it a crime to be a hindu?

I read Holy Cow (without glasses on Shivaji) and the book was pretty interesting. It's mostly about the author searching for meaning of life and discovering goodness in every faith while staying and travelling in India. That way... the cover was perfectly okay. The content of the book in no way calls for this comical picture. It's way off. Though the book is written in a humorous manner, it is not stupid. The cover belies the content.

After looking at the cover in www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=0767918142#praise... Here, I think 'our' icon has been 'taken' for granted. Kinda exploited. I agree with some of the points dyamm and Marley had raised.

There is a difference between 'being' liberal/accepting transformations in ones culture/religion and 'letting' others take you for granted... isn't it?

Hairy bro...
I'm talking Hindu religion infront of the world stage. Don't tell me what you saw in Nepal when you were kids. Can U say the "N" word to an African American in public, but they do among themselves. Politically correctness play a vital role in modern democracy. As Dyamn gave you a good example, those people will exactly do what he has mentioned. If they want respect, then they need to respect us too.
Let's just put the recent movie as an example, "The Passion Of the Christ". Even when it showed what exactly happened in the Bible, the Jews made the huge protest about making antisemitism. Why do they do that? They care....and want to make world know that they can rise up and speak. Why not us? We have much clean history about religion than any others. Why do that want to mess with us. Haven't they have their own problems with their brothers...Christian, Judisn and Muslim? Are we going down the history as the religion who never rose up and spoke against things like this?
Harvest...among all the things and the experinces in India, did she had to choose Shiva? Isn't there anything in India worth putting on the cover. You tell me.

You have a point Bob... but I am not too sure it was the author who decided on the picture for the cover... must have been the designer (who did not have an inkling about content) who did and the Chief Editor (intent on grabbing attention of oriental-hungry westerners) who approved it?

If it was not Shiva on the cover it would have been Bishnu, Laxmi, Ravan, or Guru Govind, Sai Baba or somebody. Of course, other pictures could have gone on the cover but... would anything have been as attention-grabbing as Shiva with pink goggles on ?Think about the sales!

Just a thought... if they had decided to put picture of Sai Baba or some other spitirtual leader (mentioned in the book) on the cover... would they still have put pink goggles? I doubt it.

Harvest...
The name of the cover designer is REX BONOMELLI. You can do a search in the Internet and find some of his other works. But you can write to him addressed to the publisher. I think beside getting sale, we simply don't say a word to such thing and avoid it. We're way too liberal than what we should be. And they're making money taking the opportunity of Hindu's silence.
dyamn Posted on 12-May-04 10:34 PM

harvest, so you're suggesting that it's ok cuz it was meant for sales. author, designer, publisher, editor , i don' t care who it was who came up with such an insensitive idea but it is an insult to hinduism and that should be the enough reason to be upset and protest against such cheap act. Also, author, designer, publisher, editor or whoever affiliated with the book, he/she must have agreed/approved the picture to be on the cover, so they all are equally responsible.
you're getting the wrong idea and not understanding the theme. It's not bout the book, it's about the hindu belief and values that the cover has exploited; doesn't matter if it's for marketing or or any other reason, it is still an abuse of the hindu beliefs and values..

Damn,
I have not said "...it's ok cuz it was meant for sales". Read my comments once again. I am not defending but giving reasons 'why' they must have done it.

I think I understand the 'idea and the theme'... but still I think it is about the 'book' (since it generated this thread and concern) as much as it is about 'respect' to a religious icon.

Bob, thanks for the designer's name.

As to Bob Marley's

Are we going down the history as the religion who never rose up and spoke against things like this?

We do not want to go down in history as crusaders going around killing innocent lives and hacking innocent people in the name of Allah and Hesush, I am sure if it was beacon-muhommad, Christ-woody on the cover, the person would be either be hacked or live a life in seclusion. My point being, isnt our religion supposed to be one of the most transparant? evolution of this religion/ philosophy has been through years and years of discources between philosophers of that time and has stood the grounds in spite of deadly invations. Ours is the one and only religion which does not make it a, for lack of better word, "blasphemous rite" to cross religious boundry, and just may be given rise to buddhism back then. First there is alot to be proud about and learn about this religion than to fret about some sovournist who decides to be all artsy, we all know who and what Mahadev IS. Spread the word and become Mahadeve's witness if you will if you care that might do some good rather than being too reactive on some bimbo's book cover.

meera Posted on 13-May-04 11:10 AM

Which stupid dummy came up with the idea of putting pink sunglasses to Shivaji, haven't they heard about "Freedom of Religion"? One of the 4 freedoms that America is supposed to stand for! Hate that idea.

Well they say, don't judge a book by its cover, so maybe the book is worth reading though I serously doubt it.

Will comment more after I finish reading the book else it will be like the blind men describing the elephant.
LadyBug Posted on 13-May-04 12:04 PM

Amen to Bob Marley, dyam bahadur and meera! All in one breath :)

It is offensive. period.

no side excursion (like quoting slokas) can justify such a blatant act. period.

if you start justfying things like that, then you can even justify hitler asking jews to put swastika on their arms. period.
dyamn Posted on 13-May-04 12:38 PM

Harvest moon,
I had carefully read your comment before i posted my last message. you said, they must have done it for sales reason. So , i said , does that give enough excuse for them to manupulate hindus' belief and values? why don't they put thier moms' naked picture if they are so concerned about the sales? now , you tell me which part you didn't understand?

thanks,

Dyamn bahadur..
