Sitaraji, I love your dog. Is that Tibetan Apso? I have promised my son I will get him a dog when he turns 5(which is after 2 years). I have always loved this breed but have not seen much in US. If it is apso, can you please tell me where you can find one? Thank you, sbj

Sbj....just do a google search for Lhasa Apso's in your area, there are plenty around. Personally I'd suggest a shitzu...better temperament with kids then Lhasa apsos but both breeds are equally adorable. other suggestions: visit the pet store or look in the newspaper; sorry never seen one for adoption at the shelters. Oooopsss...Sitara mah bad spoke/wrote outta turn. :)

Hi sbj: Thank you! Isn't he a cutie?...ofcourse a complete biased opinion! :) My puppy is a Shih Tzu. As you saw in the pic, he has long hair which will grow down to the floor. Unlike Lhasa Apsos, Shitzus have a shorter snout, hence the button nose, big eyes and short strong legs. They are short with a high carriage of the head and tail. They were originally/exclusively bred as temple dogs in China; also known as lion dogs. They were originally a cross between the Pekinese and the Apso. The toy breed don't grow to be heavier than 11 pounds and the regular breed ususally up to 15 pounds. The toy breed may have kidney problems due to their small size. They are supposed to have a wonderful temperament. They need to be brushed atleast once everyday to maintain a beautiful coat. Since they are small, it will be easy for your child to take responsibility for his pup. Wonderful as a playmate and a jogging partner!!!!! I got my puppy from a breeder (my colleague who has 6 ShihTzus, recommended me the breeder) from West Virginia, so I kind of knew what he would grow up to look like. The breeder actually breeds show dogs and is very strict about the welfare of her puppies. You can also get one from animal shelters or ShihTzu rescue places, but they might not have the best temperament or health conditions due to abuse. Also, you won't know what they will grow to look like... due to mixed breeding. I would recommend that you get one from the breeder in your area since it is for you child. Make sure the puppy is not from a puppy mill where conditions are so bad that the puppies are very sickly. Be prepared for another child though! You pup will become your other child...whether you like it or not! :) and a great companion for your child. All in all the rewards are great! "Little Bowow"(only Sajha name!) has a great sense of humor and the curiousity of a cat... and the little things that he does to get my attention is really hilarious! He loves walks. Funny thing is everything barks at him (he looks like a walking mop) but he just grins at them and trots along. I believe shihTzus don;t bark much unlike other small breeds. Hey good luck with your search and enjoy him when you get one. :)

Sitara ji: It seems that your heart is as pure as nature. The art that you share here at Sajha, the postings that you write, and the way-of-life(that I know so far) you have are all awesome. Uhi Rajeev, CT, Amrika

Rauniyar ji; What a way to wake up... to your sweet post, although, undeserved!! :) Thank you! There is much one can learn from nature; from walks, gardening, spending silent times with your beloved, playing or simply sitting, listening to the birds, insects and the rustling of leaves. In nature, every other trouble gets reduced to naught. Hoina? One of my desires is to go on a two week camping/rafting trip... maybe someday! :) What about you Rauniyar ji, do find solace in nature?

Thank you Nkt2ji and Sitaraji Thanks a lot for your input ladies! Now, I have a dog hunting job to do :-) Rauniyarji is right about Sitaraji, I have been a silent reader for a long time and have always read what Sji wrote and love the way she writes. Whenever I read what Sji wrote I felt as if I am talking to a big sis.(which I don't have) I wish I met you,Sitaraji when I was in Boston. Thanks again and have a great day all!! sbj

honeybuzz, thanks for the advice but my dog is not that small and i would not advice putting bark collar unless you have to, or may be i am just too kind. i hate shocking pets...imagine someone doing that to you. you get the picture, so if you can train not to bark otherwise its better. however my point was, shitzus are shrieky and constantly barking by nature if i;m not mistaken. luckily i don't have that kind, so no problem. glory be to those who can keep up with that shrieky bark, couple of my friends have them and they drive me bonkers bhanya ke.harey peace peace.....out!

I was just wondering : Why girls or women prefer to keep Tibetan Apso as pet. What is the particular thing about this dog then others? I hope I get the answer:

Hey Honeybuzz; Thanks! I saw your dog too... like someone said, he looks like a toy; Cute Cute Cute! You know, when I was a child, I always wanted one like yours. Cool keta, thanks... it will inspire me to take more pics! :) ---- Sbj ji: Please do some research on the breed you want and suits your needs. I did an extensive research on the ShihTzu and own a few books too. Some of the characteristics of the ShihTzus(pure-bred) according to many of the books and breeders (and why they were so prized in Chinese palaces and temples): "Intelligence: The brain size is relatively two-and-a-half times that possessed by any of the larger breeds, such as the German Shepherd or the Lab. Temperament: Extremely good temperament Health: Pretty sound Bark: No noisy yapping, but on special occasions one short, sharp bark that dwindles away into a series of throaty gurgles. (This characteristic was the reason why they were bred for the quiet, serene temples in China.) Hardiness: Sturdy and slow to wear out." So far, my puppy fits into all the above criterias. He's also been to a puppy training class where there were other ShihTzu puppies. Amazingly, the little ShihTzus did not bark or yelp at eachother or at people, although there was plenty of tail and tongue-wagging! The trainer did mention that in all her years of training puppies, ShihTzus reminded her of reflective monks! Guess what, suited my needs! :) Please do keep us posted on your pup. We can always exchange notes! --------- Ladybug ji: The professional groomers recommend that your remove the bloodsucking ticks and the obsessive bugs off your dog before your actually groom him. And yes, grooming is a vital part of taking care of your dog, if you have one. I'm sure there is a good one in your area.
