Jaya-Nepal, I know what you mean. It's tough to do work around here with these stupid Bandhs all around. Incidentally, my "Strictly Business" piece for The Nepali Times tomorrow (Friday) will talk about Bandhs. I've tried to argue that a bandh is basically a "negative externality" (much like pollution). It may yield to market-based solutions when you put in mechanisms that force the producers of bandhs start paying for the true costs associated with organizing any bandh themselves. As things stand now, it's millions of Nepalis who "pay" for the bandhs through lost income and productivity. oohi ashu ktm, nepal |

Bravo Col. Pun for defying and showing courage to counter the trend of ban. As usual, KP with its biased nature tried to depict the rally as nothing but holliganism. Ashuji, can you shed some light in that rally and its effect on the defeated mentality of we Nepalese to accept anybody to force their opinion on us, in this case the trend of bandhs. |

Kurikuri, thanks for bringing up Col. Pun's dubious chivalry in the streets of Kathmandu yesterday. I think, however, that unless he's able to show the same defiance in next week's Maoists-called bandh, both the intent and the symbolic consequence of what he pulled off yesterday will remain questionable. Let's wait and see what happens next week. In the meantime, of course, let's await Ashu ji's market based solution to curbing bandhs. |

What is Samata Party? Few Arab Rupiyah of Naranyan Singh Pun followed by a hoard of sheep to get part of it. |

ashuji, your faith in the market is commendable but it cannot change the culture of bandhs. everyone calls bandhs nowadays. who will impose the mechanisms on whom? trying to fine the 'producers of bandhs' will only draw more people to the streets and cause more inconvenience to the ordinary people. it is a hopeless situation really. unless those people understand the implications of calling bandhs, they won't change. |

Provein, I take your point well. Sure, market is NOT answer to everything: but it does -- for what it's worth -- provide tools to allow one to think along certain logic and try to attempt to explain non-market events and activities such as Bandhs. Still, my ideas and thoughts are ALWAYS open to your criticisms; so, if you disagree, be sure to write letters to editor, explaining your logic. It's only through only-ideas-matter kind of non-personality-based discussions that we can make sense of what happens in Nepal and why. oohi ashu ktm, nepal |

Hello Ashu Dai, read your article long time back but had been busy lately. Well, definitely your three solutions are great. I am sure lawmakers came up with such issues, but then they need to go through a bunch of hooligans, who would never think over such issues. Thats the main thing in Nepal. Another thing is, the frequent strikes is all for their personal benefits. The Maoists aim to end the feudal system in Nepal. And the five party alliance's aim is to end the regression. Frequent bandhs and strikes are not the solution. They need to come up with reform plans. They need to convince people. They need to do something for the society. Too bad democracy in Nepal took a wrong path right after Mr Bhattarai's government. There is no way peace can be restored in Nepal within a decade. If Maoists end their war, I am scared someone would pick up arms with some other aim. I can only hope peace is restored. Good one though Ashu Dai... jaya_nepal..!!! |
