Hi there pple… does anyone here know how to make the traditional Nepali wine ‘jaar’… :P have been staying in a foreign country too long and well, the URGE to drink ‘Jaar’ is well too much… my mouth is watering as I’m writing this and I’m having to keep swallowing my saliva… any useful help appreciated.. :P
redstone Posted on 18-May-04 06:23 AM

LOL. my mom knows i think. but she wouln't. The house smells nasty and takes a long ass time to get it ready. now i think about it, my grandma used to make it good. aaah..jaaar, i was some too. thanks ED, for reminding me. as*hole .lol :@
OU812 Posted on 18-May-04 06:45 AM

Eddie,

1) Take some basi bhaat.

2) Mix it with dried yeast (from safeway or M& S)

3) Wrap it in a peice of cloth, pack tightly in a tin container and store for 4-5 days in warm dray place to ferment.

4) Voila!! you have Bhaate Jaar. If you manage to succeed, please do invite me. Last time I tried to make jaar, it turned green, mouldy and stank worse then blue stilton.

:o)
redstone Posted on 18-May-04 04:56 PM

oh sick. that jaar should be used to kill rats and roaches. lol
nice idea OU
kusume rumal Posted on 18-May-04 07:02 PM

harey the term 'jaar' means something else.. its Jaand that you're talking about..
Jaar is when you steal away someone else's wife.. and the guy is called Jaar ho kyare... not sure but somewhere in this line..
cool_keta Posted on 18-May-04 08:48 PM

sorry ED, same problem here. My dad knows how to make it really good. I think u need a rice thing that white stuff. You mix it with water and put some sugar. You gotta then store it in warm place for several days. Its complicated.

aah people. i remember that sweeet nasty smell of jaar when my grandma used to make some back in nepal. she would make jaar, and raksi. raksi is the clear one, not the white one. man, i used to drink that a lot. it was no problem if you drank a lot. she used to go back in the OLD kitchen back in the house, let no one come in and after several hrs, it would be ready. we had to drink it, during some festivals, jaar was importat part of the festival. mm..i want jaarrr with "CHOILA" emmmm...

Na tanu ta tanu lagne, Tane pachi matne
Matey pachi jata sukai Ladi Badi gari,

Hey rekha, that is when u black out after "dhoking" lot of "tharra". If you just drink a few glasses, you would feel the way narayan gopal used tofeel:

Galti hajar hunchhan
yanha hosh harayeko bela
Eklai timi (rekha) na.aa.u
ma matiyeko bela

in jest:-)

aardvarak Posted on 22-May-04 08:32 PM

rekha (-ji), using the pretext i am just trying to recollect nepali songs which have glorified "jand/raksi et al". This is the one written by yadav kharel and sung by ram krishna dhakal.

machha pani ma paudiyechha re
nasodha jeevan ma kati piyiyo
piunu nai yadi chha vane
feri kunai na knunai bahana chahiyo

If u guys know some other songs, yesi jawos na ta!
