I am looking to buy a mobile phone in the US and send it to Nepal for use there. Does any one have information on the cell/mobile phone services available in Nepal and the type of units that would work in Nepal, for example, manufacturer/brand/model/data receiving transmitting system etc.? Any useful information would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

whatever u buy, remember it has to be a generic GSM phone, that does not use sim cards from any specific companies in the US. So the cell phone u buy directly of cell phones companies will give problems. U will need GSM phone, because the cell phone technology used in Nepal is that. In the US companies use different technologies like GSM, CDMA, etc...

AT&T now has GSM phones. The newer models of Nokia are also GSM! If you go into anywhere they sell cell phones you should be able to get GSM phones! But you are also able to get the same phones in Nepal.. just tell them not tobuy cheap models and get stuff like nokia- which is very popular!

You need to make sure you get the following: an UNLOCKED GSM phone what works on GSM 900 networks. A locked phone only works on the network of one provider (usually the one who sold you the phone). An unlocked phone can use a SIM from any compatible provider. Note that AT&T mostly sells LOCKED phones that only work on the AT&T network. T-mobile also sells locked phones, but is willing to unlock them after you've been a subscriber for 90 days. Neither of these probably work for you... I would look for an UNLOCKED phone on Ebay, in stores in Chinatown, or through independent cellphone stores (rather than ones linked to only one provider). Also note that you need a GSM 900 phone. There are several different GSM frequencies (850, 900, 1800, 1900). Get a dualband or triband phone that includes GSM900. As far as I know, Cingular does not have any GSM 900 phones. T-mobile's cheap Samsung R-225 does work on GSM900 (if you get it unlocked), but won't work on GSM 1800 (which is common in some parts of Europe and Southeast Asia). Hope that helps. Arnico.

. i think ya just have to be sure about 2 things: 1. it supports GSM 900 system (thats what they use in Nepal) 2. and its not locked (sometimes the service provider lock their cell phone) rest would be OKE if you are lucky enought to: first get a connection and then NETWORK from NTC cheers :)

Dhatterika... I would suggest looking into Samsung or Nokia websites instead of cell phone providers and looking for GSM phones there... Actually if you do the calculation good cell phones are not really that cheap in Nepal... well if you are buying a cheap one than thats another issue but good phones start from 10,000 rupees and goes further up... it is kinda the same, you get okay phones at around $100... so well you decide... the phones you buy in Nepal aren't that bad...
