Selling the electricity is a very good thing for Nepal. But is it sufficient for Nepal already? KATHMANDU, May 27 - Indian Power Trade Corporation (PTC) has submitted a proposal to buy electricity from Nepal to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). The Indian officials of PTC are expected to arrive in the capital soon to make an understanding on the deal. India being one of the markets for Nepali electricity agreed to buy electricity from here as Nepal has surplus power of 600 million units after the completion of 144 MW Kaligandaki-A Hydel Project. The NEA sources said, it is planning to send a positive reply to PTC authorities in this connection very soon. (hbt) |

.At present, the total installed capacity is around 600 MW only, mainly- we rely on hydro. By 2003, the proportion of the population that uses electricity wud ve been supposed to be around 40% (not clear abt the current data) (till few years back, it was only 15%). However, with 144MW K-Gandaki, energy generation has increased. But this much of energy is not sufficient to make our country fully electrified. Also, there is a growing interest in environmentally friendlier small hydropower plants and generating electricity locally with biogas plants and solar cells (renewable energy sources) in mountainous areas that are hard to access, where supplying electricity from the national grid would be too expensive. This would certainly meet the DOMESTIC POWER DEMAND of our country. With the other Mega hydroprojects (candidate) like : Karnali (10800MW), West Seti (750MW), Budhi Gandaki (600MW), Arun-III (402) and the Pancheswar (6480MW), (which r considered as export oriented projects), we will have surplus energy and can export those energy to the neighboring country (India) , and BENEFIT TO OUR COUNTRY IS : hydro rent ($/kWh) or the ECONOMIC RENTof that hydro project. Other examples: in Canada, Bhutan (on going, i guess) etc. >>A related topic was discussed earlier too. - http://www.sajha.com/archives/openthread.cfm?threadid=12746&dsn=sajhaarchive2003 |
