I salute people who are involved in this endeavor. I hear that more than 14 million rupees has been raised for this purpose with very high community participation. People really want to do something for the society.

It demonstrates that not everything is lost in Nepal......there are still some reasons to be hopeful.

utsav,

I had heard about a Pundit, Narayan Pokhrel(?), a man of amazing oratorial skill, reportedly a former classmate of Babu Ram Bhattarai, when I was in Chitwan last year.

When he performed a yagya in Mangalpur, even those who didn't have a lot of money showed up with a lot of money for the social cause: hospital was the major one.I have never been to his oration, but even atheist and skeptics told me he evokes a strong feeling in listeners to give away what ever they could for the social cause.

So, he was in demand everywhere: in Chitwan, in Tanahu, in Pokhara, in Baglung. Newspapers too started to write about him.

I am not mentioning his name to detract anything from the great heart of hundreds of Nepali like Sete Kumal. Each of these individuals deserve praise. But it is interesting note a particular Pundit who is a commonplace sight in these events.

When I hear of KTM's powerful ones throwing money for some esoteric cult figure-like, often Indian, gurus and competing with each other for favor of these people, I feel sorry for them. Their future, they should know, lies in making the common people of mofussil happy.

In fact, Pandit Narayan Pokhrel initiated the yagya there as well. He definitely is very popular in the belt you mentioned.

It's refreshing to see this particular community trying to raise funds internally for the greater benefit of the society. Nepali villages and cities need not depend excessively on governent funds. Extending it further, Nepal need not completely depend on foreign aid. We need to look at innovative ways to fund the development activities.......
