I sat outside the laundromat after 30 mins of excruciating walk from my motel. The only respite I found was that they offered a free beer for ppl doing laundry. hmm! Very little things in US come for free, and besides, I had no company, so the thought of chilling cold beer was too tempting to let go.

Sipping the "tiger" I reflected about past one and a half weeks in the bay. Life had suddenly changed so drastically. I had never imagined I would be sooo lonely in one of the most colorful cities in the world. Though I had got the drift of the city, visited my lifelong dream of the "rock" and got used to the winding and the steep alleys, there was something very void about my new life that had begun. Our homies have instilled a strange sense of discomfort in already sketchy street. No wonder noone does laundry right across from where I live. I too had wondered why till I entered the laundromat and saw three ppl with a strong odor of "TACOS" ! I cringed back and went home.

Another immediate adaptation was to find a place to eat every meal. At first, I was very excited about this eating and trying out at different places. Then, after a while, I got awfully sick of it. I had not realized i was already so used to cooking my own food. Then, not having anyone else to talk in the mornings or evenings was pretty bizarre. It's interesting now that how much a difference it makes in your life if you just have ppl around to say HI and WHATS UP once in a while. Perhaps, a social breakthrough at work?

Perhaps. Building filled with top notch researchers, scientists and scholars, what would u expect? nothing much besides, research, seminars and symposiums. Brilliant minds, hopes for future, yet unsocialable robots. Honestly, I sometimes miss my computer lab. Against all the odds, I decided to venture out one evening and entered an irish pub. A very friendly and mellow atmosphere. After talking to the bartender for a while, he concluded that i was living in one of the worst streets in the bay :). made me feel better...err..better to have another glass of his "tiger":)

-----------

Too much wondering...my wondering senses. I put clothes in the drier and sat outside. Things weren't that bad. Weather is always perfecto in the sixties. Work and supervisor are supercool. I can go and get out of work whenever I please. and get paid to attend all these seminars. I can even doze off like all the other oldies inside the hall. but yah, unlike other people, I crave for a good plate of MASU BHAT once in a while. Suddenly, I noticed an indian restaurant a couple of blocks down from where I was sitting. Unable to control my urge, I gallopped down the street into a so called "garden indian restaurant" I skimmed through the menu and "chicken biryani" was all that struck my mind.

I went inside and placed an order. Sooner or later, it was bound to happen. "Are you an indian?" I shook my head in anger but unable to show it amidst my exhaustion. "Turkish?" he continued. "NEPALI" I blurted out. "Oh! hold on, he's also nepali." he called on one of the waiters working in the restaurant.

"Bhai Nepali ho?"
"Namaste dai. ho. sadhe ek hapta bhayo yaha aayeko. aba baseko thau baata sarne bichar gardai. ekdam lonely bho." I went on not waiting for his queries.
"Ho ra bhai? ma ni tyai bichar gari raako. Thulo kotha cha. boru, babu bhai saraha ko manche, ek choti herna aaune ki mero kotha?"
"Bhai halcha ni dai. boru no. dinus na" I replied thinking i had nothing to lose.
"No. ta chaina bhai, boru yo card cha" He handed me his address. To my amazement it was the same address I was living at.
"la dai! ma ta yehi basi ra ta ho ni"
HO RA? babu kun kotha ma?

"ma 101". ani dai?
"ma 102". meri bassai. ahile samma kasari nabheteko ni?" my food arrived. I was about to leave.
"hyaa bhai, yetro paisa kharcha gareu yo khana ko lagi, ma leidi halthen ni beluki. la beluki kura garumla". He was true to his word. Even so fresh in US, I felt so pleased to meet a nepali who was such a good hearted guy. we had a nice time eating dinner together. He described his plethora of hardships he was facing at a new country, but he had so much willpower.

This morning I realized that he had moved out from our motel. I am still in search of an apartment that has basic necessities that makes it a HOME. After a refreshing last weekend with gangs of LA :P, I am feeling the blues today. I hope they'll be back again so that we can have another episode of "BAY TEerA BARALINDA".

and my final pledge: If there are any sajhaitees around bay area, it would be nice to get together sometimes, prolly in the weekend or in the evenings. and also help me find an ideal apartment so long for now :)

Oys Bhai,

Great nartration. Sicne you are in SF/bay area, here are some things to do:

1. Go to De Young museum
2. Spend some time wandering around Golden Gate Park.
3. There's a great Strip Club somewhere at the 1st street on your right. I am not advocating pornography or something here, but that strip club is something to check out. Will remain a memorable experience.
4. Fillmore street at night. Music, Pizza and Bill Graham Presents and the Greatful Dead everywhere.

5. Ocean Bay at night..

Enjoy your SF stay...

it feels good to be reminded of your good old days of youthful-playfullness, hoina?

yourt's truly,
a Freak
oys_chill Posted on 07-Jun-04 12:33 PM

Dannah, u r certainly getting better ;) . when there's a will, there's a way!

angel and wateva, thanx for good wishes.

IF dai, things to do can wait......first have to find a viable place and amicable people :). As for the things you mentioned above, golden gate and ocean bay is done. I do hope to visit alcatraz again though. Its lil sketchy to venture out in the night from where I am living at the present. thanx a lot though!
