enjoy the article if you are Phil Jackson hater like I am ...... Kim: No magic in these Lakers By Kyu-Heong Kim Forget Bryant versus Rip, Shaq versus Big Ben and even the four future Hall-of-Famers against a group of young up-and-comers. This year's NBA Finals can be summarized in one matchup: A good coach with a great team against a great coach with a good team. And so far, there is no doubt who has dominated that clash of the titans - Piston's head coach Larry Brown. Not to take anything away from Phil Jacksoný - his nine championships rings are impressive - but he has always been blessed with great players in great tandems. Jordan-Pippen, Kobe-Shaq and now Kobe-Shaq-Malone-Payton. Forget Mark Cuban's new reality show, Phil Jackson is the real "Benefactor" in the basketball world. Brown, on the other hand, has been a great coach throughout his entire career, but he's been without the benefit of great or even good teams. Sure he coached Allen Iverson, but most people in basketball will tell you that is more of a burden than an opportunity. Still, with A.I. in tow, Brown and his 76ers faced Jackson in the 2000-01 NBA Finals. Now, finally with a good team to direct, Brown is showing the Lakers what the rest of the world will soon see this summer in Athens. Whether he is coaching the U.S. Olympic team, the Pistons or the 76ers, Brown has his teams ready for anything. Perhaps the Zen-master can learn a few things from the diligent Brown. With less than three minutes left in Sunday's game, the Lakers found themselves down by 10 points. While the Pistons looked like they were ready to handle anything, it's almost certain Los Angeles, with its superstar personalities, doesn't regularly practice being down by such a large margin late in the game. The Lakers looked lost in the final few minutes of the game, turning the ball over in between Kobe's multiple unwise shots. While the Pistons valiantly fought to the bitter end of their Game 2 overtime humiliation, Malone and Payton sat on the bench at the end of Game 4 with dejected looks on their faces. If Jackson had known Shaq and Kobe would combine for 56 points Sunday, he probably would have been certain his Hall-of-Fame-bound team would win the game. Not so against a Larry Brown-coached team. Brown, in a brilliant coaching move, let Shaq and Kobe run one-on-one against his defenders while limiting everyone else to single digits. It wasn't that the role-players for Detroit fared much better - only three Pistons scored in double figures - but they did what they were supposed to do. While the Lakers' Stanislav Medvedenko was getting abused by Rasheed Wallace, Detroit's Chauncey Billups was doing his best "glove" imitation, holding Gary Payton to eight points. Oh, and by the way, Billups dropped 23 points of his own on the Lakers. With elimination looming for the Lakers, America's favorite dysfunctional family is in danger of having an ugly divorce. Perhaps Jackson isn't as a great therapist as everyone thought. Source: http://www.dailytexanonline.com/news/2004/06/15/Sports/Kim-No.Magic.In.These.Lakers-687710.shtml |

Lakers fans, here's your leader Rick Fox, a future Hollywood star, has to say about your coach Phil Jackson: "What's frustrating is when we hear coach talk about how we're not executing, and I feel like we have guys who have been here for a long time who know how to execute this offense." http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-4/1087282210292990.xml now you guys tell me how much Zen master gets repsects from his own subpar player |

Jeeeezzzý This article is nothing but a piece of crap. Nothing more!! Where was Kyu-Heong Kim when the Lakers won 3 champianship in a row after getting swept by San Antonio in 98-99 post season on the face of Phil Jackson? Before Jackson started coaching in LA, there was no doubt that the Lakers had enough talent in Shaq and Kobe to succeed. But, did Kobe n Shaq have any harmony or team chemistry? Did the team have a sense of direction? Of course, they had so many disappointments before Phil Jackson come to LA, didnt they? Jordan, Pippen, Shaq, and Kobe all played for different coaches before Jackson. Did they win any champions then? BIG NO. Were they dominant under their former coaches? BIG NO. Now, what you guys proclaim that Jackson is successful because of great players or it was an coincidence that under Jackson's guidance they played their best ball? With their former coaches, these players were just good players "as a team" and under Jackson they became GREAT players with champianship. No matter what you say, Phil jackson has the best record as a coach throughout his career and he has ability to coordinate talented players and bring out best in these players. >>A good coach with a great team against a great coach with a good team. How many champianship did Larry Brown win in his career as a "great" coach? Personally I really like Larry Brown, but I would put Phil Jackson on top of him. It just that everything is obsolute and now it's time for Phil Jackson to opt out or something. I think tonight is the last night for the Lakers and last night of Lakers Era. next season, lakers will lose all these players. It won't be the same team.... NOT A LAKERS FAN.... I will root for the Pistons tonight:) |

Rusty, I get it where you coming from. How many seasons did Zen Master play for Knicks? Rusty said ýDid Kobe n Shaq have any harmony or team chemistry? Did the team have a sense of direction?ý >>> Yeah they were/ are playing very harmoniously. Both have to use media to bicker about others. And hereýs what Shaq has to say ýwhen I'm not doubled like that, I really expect to get the ball a lot, especially when I'm shooting 68 percent from the field. It is simple. And if you don't stick to simplicity, you die a horrible death.ý He said that because Kobe forced three shots at the end of the game when their team was 10 points deficit. And what you say about the fab five of Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, Rick Fox, Devean George and Derek Fisher? They pulled Phil Jackson aside in a bathroom at The Palace on Saturday and pleaded with him to start them in Game 4. So harmonious team. NO? Rusty also said ýWith their former coaches, these players were just good players "as a team" and under Jackson they became GREAT players with champianship.ý >>> What is this? MJ did not perform while he played with Wizards after 3 years of layoff??? My fren itýs other way around, great players like Shaq and MJ made him great. Didnýt Shaq reached to final while he was with Magics??? Rusty, if you think he is so great why didn't they win last year? And why would his team has to go and sign 2 future Hall of Famers??? If his triangle offense is go great why wouldnýt he go and sign sharp shooter like E-PIT (go HUSKERS :p) Barry brothers and Steve Smith. Do you have answer? To be a great coach you have to win the championships with mediocre players like Coach T did with Rockets and Coach Pop did with Spurs (as you say TD ainýt a great player ;) I hope he is not using Jeannine Buss as his bait to be back with the team. I guess thatýs what they teach in Zen Philosophy, if you want to get a job, make a gf who is your boss daughter. **** no offense to zen followers, no clue what it is **** And oh yeah about his stint with Bulls, how come he didn't win when Jordan ws out playing baseball? I think he is the most overrated coach I have seen in NBA. We remember Jordan and his sidekick Pip winning the championship and same with Lakers, itýs Shaq and Kobe it's not the Zen Master. If Pistons wins tonite, the most credit goes to Brown unlike his counterpart. I hope that clarifies how great of a coach Brown is. Reminding you again, Coach Brown will be the FIRST coach ever to win collegiate and professional (NBA) level with mediocore players. |

AX, >>How many seasons did Zen Master play for Knicks? I don't care about him as a player. I do care about his job as a NBA coach in this context. >>Yeah they were/ are playing very harmoniously. Are you sure? Kobe came to LA Lakers in 96-97 season; Shaq came to the Lakers in 96-97 season when he was averaging almost 27/28 points with Magic under different coach. They played together for 3 years before Phil Jackson came to LA. Remember it took him just one season to coordinate their team chemistry before they headed for champianship. >>MJ did not perform while he played with Wizards after 3 years of layoff??? Again miscontrue... Here I am talkin bout great players to be champian. I didn't talk about those players who just scored and scored. I think MJ used to score 30/34 points in average before Phil Jackson arrived to Bulls. Yes, I do appriciate the fact that Phil Jackson cannot make a poor player to good, but like I said, he certainly makes good players to great players by maximizing their talent for the benefit of team. Unfortunately, you know that nothing lasts for long. It's not his time anymore. I think he should wrap up his career now. >>why would his team has to go and sign 2 future Hall of Famers??? I think it was their wish, not Zen Masters. Zen Master has had three rings without two extra hall of famers. |

AX bro, As much as we agree on basketball related stuffs, I must say that I would have to disagree with you or with anbody else in that matter that Phil Jackson is one of the best if Not the best coach in the league. NBA is all about ego, money and popularity. Most of the players who make it to NBA are extremly talented and I must say they do carry that killer ego...Winning 6 championships with the Bulls and conquering another 3 with Lakers is not an easy task even if you have the greatest talents in the world.Keep in mind that the rest of the league is always on the heels to dismantle you....Just take the case of 2004 Lakers...Having 4 hall of famer players can create so much chaos as we have seen through out the season...Payton bickering about it all season...KObe's dream about being hte Man and what not..In order to manage those talents and bring it to Finals itself proves that how good of a coach you are....On the other hand I must also say that Brown has done a tremendous job managing Jail blazer Rasheed and Chauncey... *** Does anyone remember that 'Sheed's 2000 Blazers nearly pulled of an upset leading by some 14 points in the sixth or seventh game I believe. before losing...? I can smell that happening..The stage is set....The Lakers have looked really bad so far BUT all they need to do is WIN 3 games and they are the champs...they cant think abt past.. If I was JAckson: * Go back to old starting lineup... Shaq, Fox, George, KObe and Fisher....cuz this is bit faster than the the old lineup...esp when Malone is not fit. * Bring in shooters...early in first quarter if the team is struggling to score ( esp Rush,Russell)....U have to gamble at this stage..u cant be cautious with the Pistons.. * feed the ball to Shaq until he passes out...THE KEY HERE IS SHAQ...If Shaq is was effiecient as he was last game....with lot more touches...KObe can still have a medicore game and Lakers could win....Kobe is getting the attention.toss the ball to Shaq... --- KObe has guaranteed game 5..the guys is simply talented to ...walk as well..so MONEY ON LAKERS>. |

Rusty bro, Jordan took off three years off and he didn't have side kick like Pip while with Wiz. Casey00 bro, I said he is the MOST OVERRATED coach in the league. And it took him 90 games into the year to find out triangle offense does not work with the players he has. Why would it take him so long to figure out if he is the greatest coach as you think he is. He had lots of opportunity before Lakers and he did not take it, the ONLY reason was he could not win with those mediocre players in the team. He likes to coach the team which roster has superstar(s). and what about that stupid bunch of five? can't these puppets resolve themselves that they have to go to their puppet master? I hope he signs to another low profile team to prove us wrong. Rusty, Casey00, aakash, DWI, YB and all, it was pleasure discussing with you all about the NBA and if any of you happened to be in Los Angeles area, I will be glad to meet and discuss more about games. Congratualtion to Detroit Pistons and its fans. Hats off to Pistons, they are the best team this year. After watching last nite game, it seemed that Detroit wanted it more, out hustled, outscored and OUT COACHED superstars loaded Lakers team. I think Detroit win was a good for the basketball, but not the NBA. Now other teams will start to copy their defensive style of play and fans may lose interest. Most of the NBA fans like to see high offensive game rather than defensive style of game. This Detroit team has to be the first team which did not have superstar caliber player since I have been watching NBA. This championship showed us that you do not need superstarsý tandem of MJ-PIP, TD-ADMIRAL, SHAQ-KOBE to win the championship. I have heard people trying to compare this team to old 88-89 team. I did not see any changes in Lakers defense last three games. I know Zen Master wanted to own the 10th championship badly but it seems he lost interest in it. And it was sad to see Malone, who I never liked, in the street clothes when the game was on the line. I give him the benefit of the doubt that he was injured and helped the team not playing. I am sure when he wakes up today, he mite be thinking what if he gone to other teams than Lakers and what the outcome will be. He took a huge pay cut just to win the championship. No question in my mind, he is one of the best PF ever to play the game, if not the best. I hope he will come back for one more year and try to win elusive championship, if not he will known be as a great player like Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Dan Marino of Miami Dolphins, Don Mattingly of NY Yankees w/o championship ring. I feel for Payton too. He is not the same player as he was. Like Malone, he took huge pay cut to win the championship. He never felt easy with Zen Mastersý triangle offense. I still believe that he can dominate the game in this league, if given the opportunity. I would not mind him seeing him play for SPURS for veteran min $1 mil. Congratulation to Coach Brown as well. He deserves the championship after 22 years in the league. It seems the lots of players will be changing their team. It will be interesting to see who will land where espcially unhappy superstars like AI3, TMAC, Vince Carter, Kobe, Shaq and Rasheed. |

Rusty, DWI and other Knickerbockers fans, tomorrow marks the 10-year anniversary of horrific day in the Knicks history. Knicks lost to Olajuwan led Houston Rockets. That day John Starks was 2-for-18 that night and 0-for-11 from 3-point and it cost Patrick Ewing and the Knicks the championship. As being a Ewing's fan, it still ticks me remembering that day. we never discussed about it here, would love to hear from you guys.... Any NY basketball trade news??? Trades: Apparently T-Mac and O'Neal want to play for the same teams...umm interesting..if they happen to end up together..they could be serious threat for another championship. Dallas as reported could be the possibly destination but if any of them were to end up there....Nowitizki would have to be traded.....As for Dallas...I think players like Walker, Jamison and Abdul Wahad with salaries could be traded...so it would be interesting to analyse this offseason..this offseason could be one of the most interesting ones in years...Plus I am surprised no one is pulling out trade talks regarding Allen Iverson...I really thought Iverosn would be traded somewhere ....Oh well...we will jsut have to watch what happens.. |

AI3 could land with LA Clips. AI3 with brand and Mageatte(???) is a good team. Since Shaq is gone and with additions of AI3 in their lineup, Clips would be the best basketball team in LA. I hope that is the case. I thought Nowtizki is the only MAVS player who is untouchable. It would be hard not to trade him if you can have caliber players like Shaq and TMAC together. |

Lakers have decided that they want KOBE but I thought...abt this scenario. Lakers signing Kobe to maximun contract and shipping him to Philly for Iverson and some other B+ player( most prolly Big dog)..I dont see how Kobe would be able to dominate West Conf without Shaq..its just impossible....unless Lakers bring in some good quality players around him...If Kobe was to go to Eastern COnf then he would be able to make some noise but Lakers need to realise that without Shaq they will just barely make it to the playoffs.... About Magic....I seriously think that they should trade Mac...they guy doesnt want to be there...he constantly complains abt not winning..but I think the reason why he wants to get traded is that he wants to make more dough..which is understandable.. ABout Knicks fan...I think they are going nowhere..they have signed some big name playes and I believe their salary cap is way too high for next season..so they wont be able to add quality players unless they trade somebody..PLus getting spanked by the Nets proved that they havelong way to go before they can actually compete for the eastern conf. |

Nice analysis Casey00 bro on Lakers. From the past championship experience, we learned that the team does not need two superstars. Lakers are doing the right thing trying to retain Kobe and shipping disgruntled Shaq. Kobe is 7 years younger than Shaq and Shaq will be making 29 mil next year and 32 a year after and he is still looking for a contract extension beyond that. Last year, I read some where that Shaq had shouting match with Jerry Buss and Buss is still miffed about it. I guess he does not know how to talk a guy who pays him. He also went to media saying he is the main reason for Lakers got Malone and Payton. What does that say about Lakers GM Kupchak? He is the cancer of the team and need to be shipped. I say trade Shaq and get 3-4 good players. Lakers can still be competitive and YES I do not want them to be championship caliber team. Coz I DONýT LIKE THEM. I think following are teams who got chance to land Shaq: Indiana ý trade J OýNeal with Ron Artest and Harrington/Croshere (just for salary) Dallas ý trade Walker, Wahad with J Howard/ M Daniels New Jersey ý Kidd with Martin ( if he resigns) Memphis ý Gasol with JWILL and L Wright (if he resigns) |

Yeah Ax br0......no doubt in our mind that you hate lakers. Reasons are obvious......they always come in spurs' way dont they? But it seems to me that you are more happy that the lakers lost( and got dismantled) then you would have been if Spurs had won. Anyway......i really dont know how lakers are going to look next season. Its really hard to tell if shaq and kobe will stay together. Chances are slim as shaq himself has asked for the trade. NBA will have a fresh look next season. Many teams with new face, a new team and new divisions. NY fans: I heard that Nike is willing to double kobe's endorsement(to 90 million) if kobe sign with Knicks for mid-level salary. I dont think he will do it......but this is just one of many possibilities. Again.......Congratulations to Pistons. They played great under Larry Brown to dethrone the Laker. Congratulations. |

Some trade rumours: * Francis for McGrady--Francis had one of the worst season of his pro- career but Mac wants out of Orlnado...umm There is no winner or loser on this one. * Carter for Allen-- I like Allens fighting spirit but Carter's atheletism doesnt come around everday * Walker to Knicks or Lakers or Bobcats-- Although Walker is a versatile player I dont like the way he tries to do it all alone..Not a team guy at all. * Shaq to Mavs or somewhere--- I still can see Shaq staying with the Lakers cuz of salary cap problems....but you never know. My self created rumour: Webber will be involved in some kind of trade ..thats myhunch..the team seems to be doing perfectly fine without him..so I dont see why they would payhim that much ... Anyway, this offseason will be exciting to analyze with lot of trades..PLease DONT NOT BUY ANY TEAM JERSEY UNTIL THE BEGINING OF THE SEASON... |

K_L bro, I ain't Lakers hater. I used to like them before Jackson arrived. I don't think Jackson is as great coach as people like to think. I am just glad that he is out of LA now. I hope he comes back to coach untalented bunch like Atlanta Hawks or Washington Wizards to show how great of a coach he is. the question of the day is DOES THESE OWNER HAVE BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER LIKE JEANINE BUSS :) Casey00 bro, those trades are feasible. Wherever Shaq goes, he would BOOST the team stock. If shaq is traded for any 2 players form MAVS, MAVS would be the favourite to win the WEST division. Even if they trade Nowitzki (hard to believe) and Antonio Walker for Shaq, they would have Shaq, Jamison, Finely and Nash (if he signs) Shaq should stay with Lakers and remain 2nd option and work on Free Throw ;) I hear Magic is sending Howard with TMAC for ex Houston Franchise with Mobley and Cato(too expensive). Trio of TMAC, Howard and Yao should help Houston to get to next round in the 05 playoffs. I think the best trade for Magic should be with the KINGS. Trade TMAC for a combo of Peja and Bobby Jackson. Magic will get two starters in return. |

I actually wouldn't mind shaq being traded... :) I know i know. Lakers might not be the most dominant team then. i am really tired of seeing lakers rely on triangle offense all the time. Its about time they run, run and outrun like in the "magic days" secondly, imagine what lakers are gonna get trading shaq. I know noone can replace shaq. It would be nice if he joined knicks (my sentimental fav.) is that possible? I have a friend who's a die hard kings fan. we were talking other day as if we were agents for our respective teams. he's willing to give ailing webber, brad miller and peelar for shaq? what do u say? :) I don't see shaq going to mavs...the trade would be a loss to lakers, unless they decide to get nowitzki and some other star like..mm say jamison? :) and finally, that would mean kobe gets what he really wants (presuming he comes out unscathed from his trials) that might propel him to play at a higher level and excel beyond jordan :P and win championship without being the second fiddle. Very interesting off season indeed! |

Ax bro, are you gonna root for lakers next season? Now as for Jackson's credibility.......i dont no what makes you feel he is overrated. He certainly ranks among THE GREATEST of all time when it comes to coaching. I really dont need to tell you what he has achieved as a coach. Now your arguementment is that he always coached the team with great players. So you are telling coaches like Pat Riley, Red Aurberbach, Tom Tomjanovich and ofcourse Greg Popovich are all overratted because they got to win the championship only because they had great players, if not the greatest player of their time playing for them? Agree on this one with you Ax bro, If Nowiztki + other for shaq trade happens Mavs will certainly be a favourate. Havent heard anything from kings so far. What are they up to this off season? I am tired of seeing potential stars in the draft day. 8 high schoolers were picked before Jameer Nelson, the college player of the year. I don't know why NBA tries to recruit more high schoolers these days. For every Kobe Bryant there is Leon Smith. I would hope these kids will go to college and learn more about basketball rather than staying the bench for 3-4 years and not knowing what to expect when the clubs need to sign him prime example the super bust high school star Kwame Brown. His contract will be up next year and nobody knows how good of a player he is. Wouldn't it be great if he had gone to college few years and come to NBA? and how about S. Telfair? Is t right to pick 6' POINT GUARD as the 13th selection? Didn't Portland pick Omar Cook few years ago? How big of a bust he was? If he played 1-2 more years at college, he would be still in NBA. God knows where he is now. Ditto with Dujan Wagner and the list goes on...... If high school kids, drafted in 2001, were to stay in college, we would be seeing players like Kwame Brown (#1 overall), Tyson Chandler (#2), Eddy Curry(#4) and DeSagana Diop (#8) playing their final year of college. Last few years NBA draft has become like NHL and MLB draft. You draft the player who you going to be great in few years, but where the developmental leagues like NHL and MLB are? I hope NBA learns from NFL and will restrict the players directly jump from High School. ********* Booooooooooooooooooooooo David Stern and the NBA ************ |

Why I wouldnt draft HS schoolers? -- Unless you have Lebron it would be risky for anybody to pick high school players..HS players regardless of how talented they are seem to be unprepared to go against big boys...the physical pressure and the mental pressure of playing 82 games can wear anyone down.. -- you give a draft pick 3-4 year contract waiting for him to develop in those years..if he does....he will be freaking expensive in the market..and u would end up paying lot of money for him..and if he doesnt..its a waste ..so I think its safe to go for instant imPACT players..like YAO MING.. -- College players are fundamentally strong...they will be consistent with the performance..and they are educated, which I think is a great thing to have.. Why HS players jump into NBA? --- C'mon who likes to go to school if you have couple million waiting for you? You can Hummer, series of BMW's and lot of booty... --- The injury situation in college could hamper your chances of getting drafted in NBA..so they are there to make quick bucks. I dont think they shouldn't be allowed to jump into NBA but the franchises must realise that...they should give chance to college players.. |
