Friends, be sure to read read The New York Times this week, on this coming Friday, if I am not mistaken. There is going to be a review of Samrat Upadhyay's book "Arresting God In Kathmandu". The book will be reviewed by Richard Bernstein.
Megawati Posted on 21-Aug-01 02:48 PM

Pardon my ignorance, could you please share briefly about the material of his book and a little about the author. Thanks

Hi all,

It's finally nice to take a break and check bits and pieces on the GBNC message board after a long time. I have concluded that Kathmandu has more cyber-cafes and an easier access to the Internet than many of these century-old cities of Europe.

Anyway, just read a few of these postings, and I am glad to see that our fellow posters are alive and kicking here -- if they shyfully choose to remain anonymous -- with ideas, thoughts and, of course, colorful words of abuse hurled at one another . . . Keep up the energy-work, guys!!

Of course, this site must NOT be confused with Encyclopedia Nepalica, but
should be seen as a cyber-extension of that table at your favorite bar, you
know, the bar or a pub, where all sorts of colorful characters come, mingle,
have wonderful, deep conversations and even, occasionally, curse at and fight
with one another . . . you go to the bar to hang out; you come here, also
to do pretty much the same, well, in a cyber-way . . .Nothing more.

Carrying on, being lucky to get hold of Samrat's book in early August (thanks to the author himself), I finished reading it two weeks ago, and have come away quite impressed with Samrat's handling of ordinary events of urban Kathmandu with extraordinary insights and simplicity. (Wait, if that sounds too hackneyed a characterization, then, I'll write more about the book and the stories when/if I have more time later!). Meantime, I heartily recommend the book to all of you.

Anyway, I loaned the book to a South African friend, and even he thought that
he could relate to Samrat's Nepali characters. Well, that was heartening to know!!
After all, what good is a pice of literature if it doesn't reflect universal themes, right?

I'm, of course, deligted to read about the success that Samrat's book is generating in the US. Of course, that NYT review will be an influential one: I hope for a smashingly positive review. On another note, don't forget that Samrat's interviews are due to appear in India Today (which is sort of like, India's "TIME magazine"), and The Times of India's Sunday Review supplement in coming days. Plus, don't forget Manjushree Thapa's interview with Samrat in a forthcoming
issue of The Nepali Times too. If my friends, Kathmandu Post ko editors, are reading this, hey guys, how about a feature on Samrat? For starters, check out
Pujan Roka's very informative suskera.com

Finally, I have decided that the American writer Gore Vidal is dead wrong: When
a friend succeeds, something inside one becomes all the more alive with joy
and genuine happiness at that friend's succcess. Way to go, Samrat.

BTW, where are Biswo, Sally and others these days? Damn, the bar isn't the
same when other regulars aren't there to share th drinks with you.

Until later, everyone. I'm posting this here, signed "oohi_ashu" because I don't have the passoword to my real GBNC-site login names here :-)

Ashu;
For starters, check out
Pujan Roka's very informative suskera.com

FIY, Ashu for a journalist, you have overlooked a very obvious detail about suskera.com, it is not just PUJAN ROKA's but also SOHAM DHAKAL's "very informative suskera.com" too ( www.suskera.com)

Please don't feed us with partial information.

Thank you

I didn't know that Ashu was a journalist ? I thought he studied errr um Microbiology, or ummm economics ? well !You learn something new everyday I guess..
MANISH Posted on 27-Aug-01 01:00 PM

Ashu aka Ram Babu KC
Don't throw stone if you live in glass house. You are just as guity as the ficticious people you are talking about. Just beacause you went to harverd don't think you are any better. You may have done a lot for the community but your personality(privately)is that of a snake(always biting that hand that feed).I bet you are gloating with jealousy at Samrat's success(after all you're a Bahun baaje). Like Bishnu I didn't know you were a journalist ? Any person can submit an article to a newpaper to have it published, that does not make you a journalist. The size of your ego cannot fit this MILKY WAY, we will have to find a new galaxy specially for you to fit your SWANG DHWANG.
Mainshisjustagadha Posted on 27-Aug-01 01:16 PM

You are pathetic! This thread was about Samrat. What is this that you are spewing your venom about Ashu. What do you have against him that you are seething in jealousy. Yes, I think YOU ARE THE ONE who is jealous. So Mahesh, THE JEALOUS ONE, start a new thread and you and your kind can have a field day. So leave this thread alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And, this site!!!!!!!!!!! Just vanish. Shoo!!!!!
MANISHJUSTGADHAII Posted on 27-Aug-01 02:01 PM

Manishisjustagadha!!
Go keep kissing Ashu's ass(keep them coming .mmmmmh.smack smack). I don't hear you saying anything to Ashu when he passed his coment. Which means you are either Ashu in diguise or Ashu's new friend Kneel i or his other friend Bob.
And what exactly is this: " YOU AND YOUR KIND?" about. And what is your kind my dear ?? Are you telling me that I do not belong here ? Its people like you with I'm better than you attitude that fucks up the whole community. If you have that mentality, regardless of where the hell you go to school, your degree and everything you learned is down the tubes. Its worthless.
manishisjustgadha Posted on 27-Aug-01 02:06 PM

Didn't I tell you to start a new thread to vomit venom? Shoo!
