Boston Globe suspends veteran
reporter

By Associated Press, 08/23/01

BOSTON -- The Boston Globe has suspended a reporter for
two weeks for writing that a man had gone to a fishermen's
memorial to find comfort when in fact he went there at the
newspaper's request to be photographed.

Globe spokesman Richard Gulla on Thursday confirmed the
suspension of Reporter David Arnold, a 23-year veteran of the
newspaper. Gulla declined to say whether Arnold had been
suspended with or without pay.

In an Aug. 7 story about the sinking of the fishing trawler
Starbound, Arnold reported that resident Jim Aikens went to
the Gloucester Fishermen's Memorial Wall of Remembrance
"because he finds a morsel of comfort in the company of
names that are now timeless."

On Aug. 14, the Globe corrected the story, acknowledging
Aikens went at the Globe's request.

"We characterized it as mishandling of a story," Gulla said.
"His characterization of the motivation of the man to go to the
memorial, his characterization in the story, is not what
actually happened."

When asked why Globe correspondent Caroline Louise Cole,
whose byline also appeared on the story, was not disciplined,
Gulla replied, "because I believe he wrote that part of the
story."

Arnold did not immediately return a phone message seeking
comment. His office voice mail said he would not return to
work until after Labor Day.

Robert Jordan, president of the Boston Globe Employees
Association, also did not immediately return a call for
comment.

Last year, Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby was suspended for
four months for failing to cite sources in a column. Columnist
Patricia Smith resigned in June 1998 after admitting she
fabricated characters and quotes in her columns, and Mike
Barnicle resigned in August of that year because he was
unable to verify facts in a 1995 column.

Yep.

And they made the whole case public, according to the democratic spirit. Kudos
to those who promote such spirit.

Imagine why they made it public? Why didn't they do it 'hush-hush'?

Diwas Khati jee,
Thanks for your posting.

It was/is true that Kathmandu Post runs news clips and
articles where sources are cited, "a close relative",
"a government officer who does not want to be named"
.... and whole aritcle contains such citations and it means
their news was in any case not verifiable. Its the
way TKP grabs money from its illeterate readers "the
readers who can read characters". In fact, TKP
and Kantipur Publication is almost occupied by Ghost
writers who write fake stories to bring imaginations
as sensational news. Its the culture established
by TKP and it allies.

Down with TKP and its allies Ghost ('news') writers (do you
call such peoples as Journalist, I don't).

Truth is truth.

Hi,

Suman Pradhan is not deaf, he is hearing you.
Suman Pradhan is not blind, he is reading you.

You can not shake his conscience or put him to correct path of professional
ethics and responsibilities. He is handicapped by vitues.

He will again say, people here want Binaj's blood. Right, Suman?

I don't understand why you guys waste your time when you know and proven that he is not capable of doing anything in public. Stop giving examples to Suman, don't insult him more. He must have read thousands of examples like that.
Diwas you are like that "kaag" and SP is drying his "peena". What the heck do your posting?

Binaj is just "untouchable" in the "house of TKP"? and Suman = nothing, thats what the fact of the matter is. Come on guys stop this.
