Dear friends, I am deeply, deeply, deeply sad to learn of the death of Mr. Julian M. Sobin, 81, the Honorary Consul General of Nepal, in Boston last week. Once when I asked what he loved in life, he replied: His wife "Leila, Harvard College and the Kingdom of Nepal -- in that order". Just last year, in June 2000, Mr. Sobin had valiantly led a team of his American friends from all over the US to Lo Manthang up in Mustang district in Nepal -- trekking up and down the mountains for six straight days, attending the Teezi festival and having dinner with the King of Mustang. Always an adventurer (his fascinating life included having visited Nepal in the 1940s, yes, the 1940s; having skiied with Tenzing Norgay in Dehra Dun before Tenzing became famous, and being the first American businessman to have been formally invited to do business in China), Mr. Sobin had been intending to visit Mount Kailash via Nepal sometime next year. On a personal front, Mr. Sobin had been a big influence in my life in ways more than one. I cherish the vivid memories of spending many an evening in Cambridge with him and Leila, discussing/debating/talking about Nepal and much else besides over dinner at his favorite restaurant The Bombay Club. To me, he was an understanding friend, a no-nonsense mentor, a trusted confidante, a wise counsellor, and above all, a powerful role model to live life with energy, passion and wit. I greatly, greatly, greatly admired Mr. Sobin, and count myself as one of the fortunate GBNC members to have learnt much from him and from his life. May his soul rest in peace. oohi ashu paris, france

Dear Diwas, It's time you give GBNC a break. I was at the funeral service personally and as soon as we had the news we fwd. it to everyone on GBNC mailing list. This is not the time to critisize GBNC, we have lost a very good friend and a mentor. So take it easy, there is a time and place for everything. -Sachit.

I just like raising a racket when I get any chance and I like acting smart when I get a chance.
