Why read?

I read a very intersting article recently. It really got me thinking.

Does reading necessarily leave us better off when it comes to making life's important decisions? As a matter of fact, professors and intellecutals bungle their lives more often than simple housewives (don't mistake me, housewives!).

If happiness is our ultimate pursuit, isn't commonsense enough to avoid making a mess of our lives? Does War & Peace, or Lolita leave us any better off when it comes to facing broken relationships, a broken heart, or buying a house?

Many of us enjoy reading fiction. In my case, it has I suppose enriched my capactiy for empathy. But if one were to ask whether my reading has left me better off in handling my life, my answer would be, "I hope so. But I don't know."

Why read?
