What follows is from Mr. Shaym Karki, the president
of the ANA,or the Association of Nepalis in
America -- that some, not all, consider to be the "mother" of all America-based Nepali
organizations.

Hi Friends,

As the October ends and November starts, we are beginning to see the

coming shadow of the winter in Rochester. We already had a couple of
mornings with frost and fog. Trees are bare and the coloured leaves are
on the ground. Mums of different colours are still keeping the garden
look like a multicoloured carpet.
We had the wonderful Opening of the Pashupati-Buddha Temple in
September, the first Dasain Puja, Laxmi Puja in our own temple. This
year is the year of rejoicing, the year of our years of dreams coming
true, the end to our pain in being a homeless community. My dear
friends, thanks to your efforts, finally we the Nepalis in the Americas
have our own community home. We Nepalis have established our own
identity as a separate community and we have come on our own. This is
the year to feel elated, happy, proud and thankful.

Still there is a lot to do. We have to build the temple, the
community hall and more centers like this all across the Americas so
that no Nepali is more than six hours drive from their center. The task
is formidable but I am very optimistic that we can do it, one step at a
time. We have shown that we have the will, stamina, energy, patience and
determination and it is just a question of time. Let us not deviate from
our path and we will make it happen.

The preparation for the July Convention is going very well.
Negotiations have been completed and the contract has been signed with
the Radisson Hotel. It's a beautiful hotel with a capacity of
accommodating more than 3500 in its main hall. Now the organizing
committee is focusing on finalizing details of the program. The outline
of the program will be posted at the ANA home page and there will be a
call for proposals so that every Nepali will have an opportunity to
participate at the convention at every level. Please follow the ana web
site (ana-home.org) for details.

Minutes of the Fall Executive Committee and treasurer's report will
be posted at the ANA web site. Please keep yourselves updated and feel
free to send me suggestions or comments.

The Public Affairs Committee is refocusing its energy in getting the
visa issue resolved. With the change in the cabinet in Nepal, we had to
do some of the things all over again and it will take some time.
However, we are still hopeful that this can be accomplished before the
July Convention. Anyone willing to participate in this committee or
wanting to offer help/suggestions, please contact me and I will forward
them to the Chairperson.

For everything to happen very efficiently, the community has to come
together and the membership has to be involved. The more the members,
the more effective our programs will be. As I had emphasized in my last
update, we need to enlarge our membership base. We need to have more

members, our goal is 1000.

We have scholarship programs, school projects in Nepal. We are
helping build the first Geriatric Center in Nepal. We are involved in
many community projects both here and in Nepal.

I don't need to emphasize that ANA is the only Nepali community
organization that is not limited by geography, profession and any other
special interest. It's membership encompasses a very diversified group.
It's very inclusive, everyone is welcome to join and all its meetings
are open to everyone (members and non-members alike). All of its
activities are open and transparent. It has been supporting youth and
cultural groups by offering financial grants. Elections are held by
mail ballots so that every member gets an opportunity to cast their
valuable vote. It's totally driven by membership. We need more of you to
come and join us and play a very active role. Please join us and bring
more friends with you.

On a personal level, I ran my first marathon " Canadian
International Marathon" on October 15 and finished it. My many thanks to

you who sent me best wishes. ANA stalwarts Kunjar & Caroline Sharma,

Kumud and Bhadrika Sharma, and my wife Indira and daughter Joshana
were
at the finish line to greet me. It was a great feeling at the age of 54
to make it to the Finish Line. It is your support and good wish that
keeps me going and I am very thankful and grateful for your support and
affection.

I will be on the road again. I will be in Boston from Oct. 31 to
November 4 and then in Los Angeles from November 4 to 8. attending
pharmacy meetings. I will be inducted in the Fellowship of the American
College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) this year. It is the highest honour
ACCP bestows on it members. I like to see as many Nepali friends as
possible in my travels. If you are in the area, please give me a call.
Nothing gives me more pleasure than meeting old friends and making new
friends during my travels.

Best regards o you and your family,

Shyam Karki
President, ANA.,

That above mentioned Pashupati-Buddha Temple is in Rochester area or in Maryland? I know there is house ( well house of gods is a temple, so in that sense a temple)in Maryland that has Pashupati and Buddha idols inside.
