The World Trade Center disaster comes as a blessing in disguise for Nepal. America has said unambigioulsy that it will target terrorism of all forms, and South Asia is certainly going to be its focus. Where does Nepal fit in? Though Nepal's Maoists haven't mounted a direct attack against Americans yet, and their so called social jihad is a wee bit different from the Islamic variety, they have targetted western interests, market forces and liberal values - all that America firmly stands for. I don't personally imagine that the Maoists have any kind of links with Al Qaeda, bin Laden's group. But who knows. That's one area worth exploring. All is fair in love and war. Terrorist outfits are found to have strangest of bed fellows. Al Qaeda, a Sunni operative, has extended olive branch with Shi'ite Hezbollah, their sworn enemies, to fight "Christians". Who knows Al Qeada must have seen in our Maoists champion reformers who will challenge the Kingdom's Hindu establishment. I sincerely hope Deuba and his ministers explore this option. In the next five years or so, America will direct heavy reources, intelligence, and billions of dollars - no less - to combat terrorism in our part of the world. Nepal would be a fool not to make anything from this windfall.

UpperWestSideji: I am very surprised at the recent public praise by Maoists of the attack against WTC and Pentagon.Their gleeful posture in the tragedy of this magnitude, their Talibani agenda regarding wine and woman dress code, and their nonchalance towards the nations's heritage (Madan Pusktakalaya) all parallel to post-1996 Talibani attitude. Recent revealtions regarding close relationship between LTTE and Al Qaida, and the surmise in intellectual circle that Al Qaida might have adopted LTTE style suicide tactics has illuminated how broad terrorists networks are/can be. LTTE is a Hindu outfit fighting for new state in Sri Lanka, and espouse somewhat Marxist agenda. We shouldn't think of quashing Maoists with the help of US. It is intellectual poverty, and it demonstrates our lack of faith on our own force and people. Democracy is still a strong cause in Nepal. But any assistance towards containing international tentacles of terrorists will surely help Nepal govt. Esp when we are sure in at least one thing: that arsenals are supplied to Maoists by some foreign source since Nepal doesn't have arm market.
